On an otherwise normal Friday afternoon in late March, I found myself sitting on my bed, completely naked in front of my laptop. It was a position I'd been in many times before, but today was different: I was getting ready for the most awkward tech demo of my career.

Don’t call it a dildo: Kiiroo and OhMiBod on the future of sex toys

CES may have a complicated relationship with sex, but one company at the world's largest technology conference has made it its mission to destigmatize doing it. For the past seven years, the family-run sex-toy manufacturer OhMiBod has made the trek to Las Vegas in an attempt to gain mainstream distribution for its line of tech-savvy pleasure products. This year, the company has partnered with one of the leaders in interactive sex toys, Kiiroo, to create an internet-connected vibrator that can communicate with the Fleshlight-branded Launch male masturbator. OhMiBod's Fuse claims to be the first of its kind to offer bi-directional control -- basically, allowing either the stroker or the vibrator to send sensations to the other device from long distances. Both devices also promise to sync with VR and traditional porn and can be used by webcam models to give their clients an extra-sensory experience. The Fuse can be purchased online, and you can see the devices for yourself at the Las Vegas Convention Center's South hall through the remainder of CES. The Kiiroo Launch is now available for $220 and the OhMiBod Fuse can be had for $150. I sat down with Kiiroo founder Toon Timmermans and OhMiBod's Suki and Brian Dunham at CES 2018 to talk about the future of long-distance love and learned a lesson in interactive sex-toy branding: Whatever you do, don't call it a dildo!

If you own either the Fleshlight Launch or Kiiroo's Onyx, then you'll know that both are capable of syncing with a certain group of adult movies. These specially-made interactive videos contain a data layer that lets the hardware jerk and thrust along in time to the on-screen action. Now, Pornhub is getting in on the action by opening up a section of its site that is dedicated to content specifically for interactive sex toys.

Ron Jeremy predicts porn's ... present?

When I met porn superstar Ron Jeremy for the first time, he was driving a Saturn Ion and sporting a flip phone. He carried a cassingle for his 1996 rap collaboration "Freak of the Week" and talked excitedly about the 1980s like they were yesterday. Ron was living in the past, but that didn't stop him from predicting the future -- or something. His vision isn't so far off from the one being pushed by futurists, analysts and the media. He sees big-budget porn making a comeback, VR-connected male masturbators and sex robots with holographic faces that allow you to choose your own bedroom adventure. Sex robots haven't completely materialized, but we're well on our way to anatomically correct automatons, and while our sex toys aren't tethered to our VR headsets, we've done that too. Oh, and Ron, didn't you spend more than ten years acting in and producing big-budget adult films? Ron may be a few years late to the party, but a sex robot with an interchangeable holographic face? That we can get behind. Click here to catch up on the latest news from CES 2017.

Everything's a platform these days: Facebook, Twitter, Uber and others want developers to build software on top of their systems. But that rarely happens for sex-toy manufacturers, who often lack the knowledge, desire and customer base to bother. OhMiBod is looking to change that by offering coders the opportunity to build their own applications for its BlueMotion vibrators.

I'm standing in the studio at Engadget's San Francisco headquarters, holding the remains of a pulverized, cream-filled doughnut. The pastry's sticky, off-white filling clings to the shaft of a bright pink vibrator, taped to the end of a silver, cone-shaped device with three arms that come together at a point and a horseshoe-shaped base. This disembodied robot boob is the Novint Falcon, a one-time game-changing game controller turned teledildonics legend. CamSoda launches a store for 'digital blowjobs'

Porn website CamSoda is launching BlowCast, a service that it's calling the "iTunes of Blowjobs," Apple's lawyers be damned. It's a system whereby adult performers can record themselves performing oral acts upon smart dildos. That footage, combined with the sensor data, is then sold to customers looking for a different sexual experience. Rather than developing its own hardware, CamSoda will leverage the gear produced by Dutch teledildonics startup Kiiroo.

NSFW Warning: This story may contain links to and descriptions or images of explicit sexual acts. A woman with an enormous, warped vagina stands over you, attempting to situate a pair of naked coeds just so on an overstuffed sectional. Their faces distort and sporadically disappear as they pleasure each other and themselves. Their movements are sometimes smooth, sometimes staccato, like a couple of gyrating marionettes on Ecstasy. They moan with pleasure and talk dirty to no one in particular, but their mouths don't move.

I'd just returned from CES, where it was obvious that sex and tech were finally coming together. Despite my rather unfortunate experiences weeks prior, I was feeling inspired. That's when Kiiroo came into my life. Like a serendipitous orgasm harbinger, it promised to take my "sex life to new heights" through teledildonics. Teledildonics is the sex industry's contribution to the Internet of Things, allowing users to remote control vibrators and sex sleeves, sync those toys to VR videos, interact with an adult cam star in real-time, "feel" a long-distance lover and, as I'd come to discover, bring new meaning to one of my favorite internet initialisms: GFY. NSFW Warning: This story may contain links to and descriptions or images of explicit sexual acts. This is the conclusion of a two-part series exploring the future of sex. Over the past two months, I've been intimately involved with a series of machines. On a mission to find the future of sex, I've masturbated into a crowdfunded sex sleeve, been transported into a porn star's anus and quite literally fucked myself. On Friday, I reached my final destination. I can now say that it is a clumsy, unremarkable future. NSFW Warning: This story may contain links to and descriptions or images of explicit sexual acts. • Second Life becomes a marketing case study

Linden Lab's popular virtual world Second Life serves as a case study for this week's Marketing Sherpa. Though people often make fun of companies that lose money on every sale but make it up in volume, that's essentially what Linden Labs has managed to do by giving away free subscriptions and counting on customers to upgrade over the long run to paid subscriptions. The secrets to success: (1) making basic membership free; (2) a greatly simplified registration page, according to Second Life's VP of Marketing David Fleck. The elephant in the room that wasn't mentioned in the case write-up: (3) Hot Virtual Sex with Furry Humanoids. Lots of it.

Finding life a little dull? This Wired article gives a hefty rundown of a variety of gaming peripherals suitable for one purpose alone: sexual stimulation. From the much-lauded Rez Trance Vibrator to the modded SeXbox -- something we have had the pleasure of seeing first-hand -- this matter-of-fact article has it all.Teledildonics is increasing in popularity, although it has skirted around the edges of the mainstream so far. As its profile is raised, we could see some run-of-the-mill adult titles with accessories on our shelves, providing a whole new genre of games for protesters to vilify.
