  • IEEE pushes for Ethernet standard between 400Gbps and 1Tbps, hopes to head off big data crunch

    Ethernet might seem passé to those of us toting Ultrabooks, but it's important enough to provoke a crisis for internet providers and many of those who depend on high-speed computing networks for a living: based on the rises of streaming video and social networking, the IEEE is worried that many of those large-scale networks will need 10Tbps of total bandwidth just to avoid a logjam in 2020. To that end, the standards body has formed a Higher-Speed Ethernet Consensus group that's mulling a new, breakneck-speed format reaching either 400Gbps or 1Tbps, depending on whose approach you'd favor. Fight the urge to pick the 1Tbps option on instinct, however. Both options would depend on bonding multiple connections together, and the faster of the two formats could lead to some expensive and very ungainly cables if it's not handled well. A meeting is scheduled for late September in Geneva to at least begin hashing out the details. Although we won't be wiring our homes with terabit Ethernet anytime soon, the standard should come quickly enough that the Googles and Netflixes of the world can satisfy our data addictions for a good while longer.     That bank-breaking 150/35Mbps FiOS connection you're so proud to call your own? Yeah, it looks like dial-up next to the searing terabit speeds recently achieved by ZTE's optical network. The Chinese telco, mostly known stateside for its mobile handsets, has successfully completed an experiment designed to highlight the possibility of migrating "from a 100G transmission system to a 200G system." In layman's terms, that's a data punch of 200Gbps-plus sent over eight channels, which in this case, totals about 1.7Tbps. Impressed? You should be, but don't cast your home connection the side-eye just yet. Like Deutsche Telekom's comparatively lesser feat, you'll likely amass a few wrinkles and lbs before this tech becomes consumer-ready. Check out the official PR after the break.

  • Researchers create two 100 terabit per second optical connections, dare us to torrent something

    Even a woman with a 40 Gbps internet connection might feel a twinge of jealousy at this news -- Japan has successfully tested two separate 100 terabit per second data links that use a single optical fiber to carry their loads. New Scientist reports that NEC scholars stuffed the light from 370 lasers into 165 kilometers of fiber to achieve a speed of 101.7 Tbps, while NICT researchers set a new record of 109 Tbps using a special fiber with seven cores to manage the trick. We imagine that Alcatel-Lucent and NTT aren't sitting still. Not that we really care who has the fastest fiber... just so long as one end leads to our house.

    Remember back in May when we told you about the latest data transmission record of 2.56 terabits per second? Well, consider that yesterday's technology, because Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT) just decimated it by announcing a successful new bandwidth record of 14 terabits per second over 160 kilometers (nearly 100 miles) of fiber optic cable. We still think that someone needs to do some research on why Japan always gets the coolest stuff fastest -- not to mention how they get the fastest stuff first.
