The Last Starfighter tested the limits of early computer-generated movie graphics, and it's about to explore uncharted waters once again. Original writer Jonathan Betuel is developing The Starfighter Chronicles, a related TV series (about alien law enforcement, not an arcade fan turned hero) where virtual reality should play an important role. If you're watching through a VR headset, certain scenes will have more to them than what you'd see on a regular screen -- you could look around a spaceship, or see every aspect of a battle. You're probably not going to find this on conventional TV (current broadcast tech wouldn't allow for VR), but it would literally add a new dimension to online streams and app-based video.

Another week closer to Fall and another week of so, so releases on Blu. Again this week we're excited about at least one catalog title, and the one this week is extra special. In fact we can't imagine growing up without seeing The Last Starfighter and can't wait to see it in HD for the first time ever. Other than that though, we probably going to pass on everything else this week, but maybe we'll rent How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days for the wife -- on second though, she'd probably make us what it with her, so scratch that. The Last Starfighter (Universal) The Last House On The Left (Universal) Hannah Montana: The Movie (Disney) How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (Paramount) Julieta Venegas: MTV Unplugged (Sony) Tyson (Sony) Sons Of Anarchy: Season One (Fox) Dexter: The Complete Third Season (Showtime) Playtime (Criterion) Sicario: Ejecucion De Mando (Laguna) The Fighter (Laguna) Surveillance (Magnolia) Visions of Britain and Ireland (Acorn) Visions of Italy (Acorn)

For those that grew up with even a vague interest in video games, the movie to watch was The Last Starfighter. Ironically enough, the game to go with the film was never published or put into the arcade cabinet form, although it turns out Atari did produce a polished and final version. Now the game has been made complete thanks to the work of an extremely talented cabinet designer who refurbished the cabinet shown in a documentary of the film. It looks almost indistinguishable from the film version: damn what we woulda' given to play one of these back in the day! You can even download a full version of the game used in the cabinet in a convenient executable file, free of charge.[Via MAKE]
