For some, each new school year brought a about a specific kind of dilemma. No, we aren't talking about picking out what to wear on the first day, we mean choosing a new Trapper Keeper. To stoke those flames of indecision and nostalgia, the folks at Kensington have teamed up with Mead, the team behind the original Trapper, and Pee Chee to bring you a line of cases that likely fit whatever 7-inch, 8-inch and 10-inch tablet you may have. The cases come in a handful of designs straight from the '80s, and they're sure induce flashbacks of scratching the name of last week's crush off the front of your catch-all binder. Perhaps even better, they're priced between $25 and $30 and start shipping this September. Fingers are crossed that these take off and we get a sweet Lisa Frank collection next -- with Velcro flaps!

  • This is the Modem World: An ode to the trapper keeper

Each week Joshua Fruhlinger contributes This is the Modem World, a column dedicated to exploring the culture of consumer technology. It's back to school season, and if you're one of the younger Engadget readers, surely you did a little supply shopping. Perhaps you bought some pens, pencils, paper and notepads. Maybe you even landed a new laptop, tablet or printer. You probably tried to convince your parents that Xbox Live has a live after-school study group that can help you excel in calculus. (Parents: I'm not going to say if it does or not. It's up to you, as involved parents, to look this up on your own. If you don't look it up, then, yes, there is an amazing study group on Xbox Live. Buy your kid that 360.) But when you went back-to-school shopping, I'm going to guess you didn't buy a Trapper Keeper.

Just in case you're not quite ready to rid your studies of tree pulp, Griffin has announced the Binder Insert case for your Five Star zipper notebook. The enclosure secures the iPad 2 or third-generation model in a 3-ring binder for easy camouflage of those in-class Angry Birds habits -- or for switching back and forth between a slate and the blue-lined white stuff. A stylus loop and access to the dock connector, volume controls, headphone jack and camera are also taken into consideration around the case's edge. In order to get your learning setup just so, be ready to part with $24.99 in order to grab one.

  • Trapper Keeper: Menubar Notes

I had previously been looking for a menubar notes program, so I was excited yesterday to discover Trapper Keeper from Limbic Logic. It installs as a menubar item and when you activate it (by clicking or hovering over the menubar icon, or with a global hotkey) it drops a search box. Start typing and if its database contains a note that matches the search text, it will drop down from the interface as above. If it does not match anything, when you press return it will create a new note with that text (which you can continue to edit). It's a little bit confusing in that ESC will cancel (TAB or ENTER saves), but I really like the idea. You can also use Trapper Keeper to launch a Spotlight or Google search by pressing the appropriate keyboard shortcut instead of return. Finally, Trapper Keeper can automatically sync notes with your iPod. All in all, I like the concept and if I were not a committed Quicksilver addict, I think Trapper Keeper might just find a place in my menubar. Trapper Keeper is $18 and a demo is available.
