HomePod radio streaming arrives on September 30th

Apple didn't really discuss the HomePod at its iPhone 11 event, but there was still some news that (almost) slipped under the radar. The tech firm quietly updated the HomePod's product page to reveal that the vaunted radio streaming feature will reach the smart speaker on September 30th. TuneIn, iHeartRadio and Radio.com will offer 100,000 global radio stations just by asking Siri. Given that this is considered a staple of other smart speakers, it'll be both welcome and overdue. For other features, though, you'll have to sit tight.

BBC to pull all radio services from TuneIn UK

The BBC is becoming pickier about how its many listeners access its award-winning radio programs. TuneIn announced that the British broadcaster was pulling its domestic streams from its service, effective August 30th. The change will only impact UK listeners of live radio streams and won't effect BBC Podcasts. The BBC's departure from TuneIn is just one of many recent actions it's taken this year to control how listeners consume its content. Earlier this year, the BBC left Google's Podcast app and Assistant because the search giant was only directing users to its own listening platform.

You won't have to use Google Maps if you want a built-in music player to accompany Google's navigation tools. In the wake of a Spotify tie-in last year, Waze has released beta versions of its Android and iOS apps with a native audio player that supports eight services in total. Deezer, iHeart Radio, NPR One, Pandora, Scribd, Stitcher and TuneIn are now available alongside Spotify to give you a choice of listening material for your commute. Not every app is available on every platform (you can use TuneIn only on Android, for example, while Deezer only works on iOS), but you only need to sync Waze with a third-party app to have access to familiar tunes on your next drive.

    One week with Microsoft Cortana

"Never mind it. Never mind," I cursed, looking down on the poorly formed monstrosity that gazed back at me with a singular pulsing eye. No, not at me -- through me. This was not my trusty Google Assistant, with whom I shared a deep logistical and day-planning-based bond. This thing barely looked like the AI to which I was accustomed and -- even then -- only in passing. This alien program appears to have eaten my digital assistant and started wearing its skin -- and I'm about to spend the next week having it organize my life.

SoundCloud keeps expanding its influence to stay competitive with the likes of Spotify and Pandora. It borrowed $70 million last March to enhance its push into new markets, added new tiers to its subscription service, brought Chromecast streaming to iOS and continues to update its offerings with listener-friendly updates like "The Upload." Now, the audio service is coming to Xbox One with a new app for subscribers to SoundCloud Free, Go, or Go+. A beta version of the app should also be available on Windows 10 PCs and tablets by the end of the week.

As part of the ongoing efforts to expand its premium radio services, TuneIn has announced a partnership with the National Basketball Association. This new multi-year deal will let TuneIn stream live audio from NBA games to subscribers, including those from the preseason, regular season, playoffs, the finals and All-Star weekend. Last October, TuneIn also struck similar agreements with MLB, NHL and the NFL, so the addition of the NBA only makes the paid app more appealing to sports fans.

Back in August, radio-streaming app TuneIn announced its $8/month premium streaming option that included music, audiobooks and live sports. Today, the company revealed that NFL games are now part of its on-field coverage. Thanks to a multi-year deal with the league, TuneIn will offer live broadcasts for all 32 teams, including both home and away play-by-play feeds. What's more, all national and Spanish radio broadcasts will be included as well. There's an NFL on TuneIn station too, serving up football coverage around the clock with news and commentary from NFL Network shows and podcasts. Starting in November, there will be a live "look-in" show streaming through the app that'll offer news, stats and clips of in-progress games on Sundays from 1 PM to 8 PM ET. If you're willing to follow the action the gridiron without the visuals, TuneIn is certainly a cheaper option that the NFL Game Pass which offers video replays in addition to live gameday audio for $99/year. The ability to livestream television, especially sports, is handy while you're away from home. But what about the times (driving, working, etc.) when you can't give a screen your undivided attention? You could opt for an all-audio option. With TuneIn's new subscription service, you won't have to worry about missing Major League Baseball, Barclays Premier League or Bundesliga action. For MLB games, you can choose between either the home or away feed for every game from spring training through the World Series. The BPL play-by-play is provided by talkSPORT, and while all Bundesliga matches will stream in German, only select match-ups will be available in English.

  • Sonos upgrade gives you Google radio and better-sounding speakers

If you regularly rely on Sonos gear to kick out the jams, today's a big day. Sonos is rolling out its promised controller update, and it's offering more improvements than you might have expected a couple of months ago. For a start, the company's devices are now much better Google Play Music companions -- you can play radio stations (curated or otherwise), fire up automatic playlists and modify your library. You'll also get noticeably improved vocal response and Sub compatibility on the Play:1 speaker, and it should be easier to both see upcoming tracks as well as navigate TuneIn radio streams. Apple Music isn't here yet (that's coming later in the year), but there's still more than enough to merit a speedy upgrade.

Siri started handling song queries when iOS 8 arrived, and now Google's voice commands recognize Shazam as a prompt to do the same on Android. That's right, Android devices now recognize the "Shazam" command, in addition to "recognize" or "name" for "track," "song" or "tune" identification. It's not the only one either, as a few other apps like NPR One, TuneIn, Zillow, Flixster and TripAdvisor (a complete list is here) are also enjoying early access to the Custom Voice Actions feature. Previously you could search apps that way, but with this access developers can get more specific. It seems like the perfect kind of feature to use along with something like Android Auto, just when your phone is slightly out of reach.

If you're part of the fortunate group that can use Android Auto now that it's up and running on Pioneer head units, you may be looking for fresh internet audio sources to keep you entertained during your commute. Well, TuneIn is happy to oblige -- the latest version of its app supports Android Auto from day one, letting you play radio stations and podcasts without taking your eyes off the road for more than a brief moment. It's going to be a long while before you can listen to virtually anything without reaching for your phone, but this should cover the bases for those times when FM radio or your personal music collection just won't cut it.

Today is a great day to be a Chromecast owner. Joining Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, Sesame Street Go and others, TuneIn is now also making its mobile apps compatible with Google's budget-friendly streaming dongle. Now that TuneIn has added support for Chromecast, you can start casting more than 100,000 radio stations, including local and international, as well as a ton of different news, music and sports podcasts. Oddly enough, the TuneIn Radio Pro applications don't appear to have been updated, but nothing's keeping those users from going to the non-paid version to get their Chromecast fix. Update: Looks like TuneIn's Radio Pro apps have been updated as well.

What do you do to improve a service with over 50 million active users? Why, totally revamp it, of course. It sounds crazy, but that's exactly what TuneIn, an audio service that lets you listen to podcasts and radio stations from around the world, did. Before, TuneIn was more like a directory with a search engine. Now, it's a full-blown audio network, which CEO John Donham says is the first of its kind.

  • PS3 users get more streaming options with Redbox Instant and TuneIn radio apps

There's a lot of streaming media apps out there, and there's now two more on the PlayStation 3. On the video side of things, Verizon has brought its Redbox Instant service to the console, giving you access to thousands of streaming movies for the same $8 a month that Netflix costs (which also nets you four DVD rentals from Redbox kiosks each month). Unlike Netflix, however, you can also choose to buy or rent new release movies without a subscription. The other app making its debut on the console today is the TuneIn radio service, which offers access to some 70,000 radio stations. It'll also be making its way to the PS Vita next week, but there's no word yet on Redbox making a similar transition to Sony's handheld.

The app offers over 70,000 AM, FM and Internet radio stations with talk radio, live sports broadcasts and live music performances freely for streaming. • TuneIn Live update comes to Android, offers category curated content discovery

There's nothing worse than seeing a handy new update hit your favorite app on the wrong OS. Luckily, time heals all wounds platform fragmentation. TuneIn's Android app has just been updated with TuneIn Live, a content discovery interface introduced on iOS back in February. What this really amounts to is an extra tab on the app's main screen, but what it offers is pretty neat: a customizable layout of eight tiles, each previewing live music representative of its respective category. Users can peek at what various stations are playing at a glance, casually flipping through their favorite genre's live offerings by swiping each tile individually. It's nothing we haven't already seen from the folks at TuneIn, but its nice to see the app updating consistently across platforms. Check out the adjacent Google Play link to snag the update for yourself.

At this year's New York International Auto Show BMW is expanding its portfolio of connected apps -- by four. The company announced iOS integration for Audible, Glympse, Rhapsody and TuneIn Radio and we couldn't help but swing by to check them all out. This integration (which also will work on Connected Minis) entails an update to those existing iOS apps. In other words, you won't need a dedicated BMW app nor second versions of these individual apps. You can use the ones you already know and love. Join us below for a little more information on how that works, and a look at the company's in-car LTE router that's also on display.%Gallery-184397%
