Netflix says its originals will kick their smoking habit
Future Netflix original shows rated TV-14 or lower and movies rated PG-13 or below will no longer include depictions of smoking or e-cigarette use, except in cases of historical or factual accuracy. The service will also avoid showing smoking or e-cigarette use in more adult-orientated projects "unless it's essential to the creative vision of the artist or because it's character-defining (historically or culturally important)," it told Variety.
What's coming to Netflix in January: 'Kimmy Schmidt' and Star Wars
Most of us will have a couple of days off at the start of the year before getting back to work after the holidays, and Netflix hopes to keep us occupied with a slew of show and movie additions. January 1st brings the final season of A Series of Unfortunate Events, along with stand-up series Comedians of the World and Tidying Up with Marie Kondo -- perfectly timed to inspire a start-of-year clear out.
Netflix's 'Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’ season 4 concludes in January
Netflix debuted the first half of The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt's fourth (and final) season this week, though we didn't know when the second would air. Unfortunately, fans will have a bit of a wait: The last six episodes will arrive on January 25th, 2019, which will end the show's run.
Netflix will split the fifth season of ‘Arrested Development’
Last week, Netflix announced that the fifth season of Arrested Development would be released on May 29th, but it turns out we'll only be getting half of the season. Entertainment Weekly reports today that the season will be split, with the first eight episodes being released at the end of the month and the final eight debuting sometime later. The streaming service is also doing this with the upcoming fourth season of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, a move likely made in order to ensure it would meet the May 31st Emmy consideration deadline.
Netflix's 'Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt' could end with a movie
Kimmy Schmidt's adventures outside her doomsday cult leader's underground prison might be coming to an end after its upcoming season. And according to Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter, her journey could end on a screen much bigger than the one in your living room: the show's producer, Universal Television, is reportedly in talks for a movie that would wrap up the critically acclaimed comedy show. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, which was co-created by Tina Fey, was supposed to be an NBC series, but it went to Netflix when the service signed it up for two seasons in 2014 before it even debuted.
What’s coming to Netflix in May: Michelle Wolf's weekly talk show
While we still want a complete list of what's leaving Netflix, at least the streaming service provides a heads-up for what's in store. In May, we'll get a slew of new shows and old favorites, including additional seasons of The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Dear White People and Guillermo del Toro's hit kids series Trollhunters. Plus, the newly-infamous Michelle Wolf's weekly talkshow starts May 27th.
Netflix’s ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’ returns May 30th
The fourth season of Netflix's Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt has a premiere date, or at least the first half of it does. The show is taking a different route than it has before, releasing the first six episodes ahead of the rest of the season, and the first half will be available to stream starting May 30th. Jane Krakowski, who plays Jacqueline on the show, told the Today show, "We're going to shoot them and get them out as quickly as possible so we don't have to make our fans and audiences wait so long." Season three debuted in May last year.
Netflix becomes your personal trainer with its new DIY device
Working out can be tough, but inversely, watching Netflix is super easy. The streaming giant doesn't want to distract you from your fitness goals, though. Netflix would much rather be your workout buddy, which is why it posted instructions for making a DIY personal trainer gadget.
Netflix is bringing 'Jessica Jones' back for a second season
Netflix is determined to start 2016 with a bang. As part of a broader premier announcement, the streaming service has revealed that Jessica Jones is getting a second season at some point in the near future. The move isn't exactly shocking given both Netflix's marketing blitz for the show, its critical praise and the need to flesh out the on-screen Marvel universe (there are plans for a Luke Cage series, for instance). Still, it's big news for fans -- the first season drew acclaim not just for its gritty take on a normally squeaky-clean world, but its ability to tackle serious issues (such as abusive relationships and sexual consent) with intelligence.
Netflix's early-2015 premieres include 'Daredevil' on April 10th
Netflix watchers, check this post and update your calendars accordingly -- the streaming service just announced premiere dates for a bunch of the new shows it will have this year. That list includes its first collaboration with Marvel, (Daredevil, April 10th), the Tina Fey-produced show it snagged from NBC, (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, March 6th), a drama from the producers of Damages, (Bloodline, March 20th), and a new show bringing Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin together again (Grace & Frankie, May 8th). For the kids, Netflix has The Adventures of Puss in Boots on January 16th, Ever After High: Spring Unsprung on February 6th and Mako Mermaids season two on February 13th. Of course, we can't forget House of Cards season three arrives February 27th, and Edward Norton produced documentary My Own Man is slated for March 6th. Whew.
