'Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection' is free on PS Plus in January

Sony is giving the PS4 a proper send-off by making some of its most important games available to just about everyone... if they have PlayStation Plus subscriptions, that is. The company has announced that January's free PS Plus games will include Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, giving you a chance to play the first three games in Drake's story (no multiplayer, alas) in remastered PS4 versions. Some games have aged more gracefully than others (the original feels like a prototype for what the others would become), but it's a good way to catch up -- or just to avoid digging your PS3 out of the closet.

'Uncharted' movie loses yet another director

So much for the Uncharted movie gaining some semblance of stability. Deadline sources claim Bumblebee's Travis Knight has to give up the director's chair due to the timing needed to accommodate lead actor Tom Holland. Apparently, his filming schedule for the third Spider-Man has created its share of headaches. The currently chosen cast members should remain intact, including Mark Wahlberg, but the release is expected to move once again. Don't count on that previously reported December 2020 premiere.

The cast for the Uncharted movie appears to be solidifying, however slowly. Variety understands that Mark Wahlberg is in "final talks" to co-star as Victor "Sully" Sullivan, the grizzled treasure hunter that serves as Nathan Drake's mentor. It'll represent a bit of a shock for people who expect a decidedly older and more gregarious character, but the current take on the movie is an origin story -- it's not too much of a shock that Sully would have fewer gray hairs.

The directorial merry-go-round of Sony's long-gestating Uncharted movie has seemingly made another stop, this time to let Travis Knight on to try and finally make the film happen. Deadline reports the director of the well-regarded Kubo and the Two Strings and the Transformers spin-off Bumblebee is in talks with Sony Pictures over the movie, which is set to star Tom Holland.

Sony is still planning on bringing the popular Uncharted franchise to theaters, but it's going to have to find new director to make it happen. Dan Trachtenberg had signed on to direct the project but stepped down, according to Deadline. Sony hasn't picked a replacement yet but plans to have a new person to head up the project picked by the end of this summer. Production is set to start sometime early next year.

Sony might not officially have a physical presence at E3 this year, but that isn't stopping it from holding its PlayStation Days of Play sale. Not only is there a limited edition, 1TB PS4 in steel black ($300) and a discount on the jet black PS4 Pro ($350), but you can get $20 off a PS Plus 12-Month membership and $30 off an annual PS Now subscription.

The long-awaited Uncharted movie has a new director. Dan Trachtenberg, known for 10 Cloverfield Lane, has joined the Uncharted project, Variety reports, taking over the helm after director Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum, Stranger Things) stepped down due to scheduling conflicts. Levy was initially announced as the film's director back in 2016, and the following year, Sony revealed that actor Tom Holland would play Nathan Drake, Uncharted's treasure hunter protagonist.

Things are moving forward for video game focused action-comedy Free Guy. The movie, which stars Deadpool favorite Ryan Reynolds, has just signed Killing Eve's Jodie Comer, Get Out's Lil Rel and Stranger Things' Joe Keery in supporting roles. Free Guy -- set to begin shooting in April -- tells the story of a background character (Reynolds) who realizes he's living in a video game, and with the help of an avatar (Comer), must stop the game's developers from shutting down his world.

Nathan Fillion is a fitting star for an 'Uncharted' fan film

Fans have been hoping for years that Nathan Fillion would play Uncharted protagonist Nathan Drake in a film adaptation, but now that the long-delayed official movie has refocused to a prequel story, that hope seemed less and less possible. For those stalwarts, here's a consolation prize: The Firefly actor appeared as the games' swarthy protagonist in a 15-minute fan film that does the cinematic adventure franchise justice.

Uncharted's Nathan Drake isn't a bullet sponge after all

Almost every action-adventure game has an unrealistic health system. In Gears of War, for instance, you can take a shockingly high number of bullets (at least on the standard difficulty) before your hero starts to crawl along the floor. Halo: Combat Evolved has regenerating health, and countless games have some kind of insta-healing med kit. You might think that treasure hunter Nathan Drake falls into the same boat, but it turns out the Uncharted franchise has a different health system entirely. That red ring around the screen? It doesn't represent damage, but the hero's luck.

Amy Hennig, former writer and creative director of the Uncharted series for PlayStation's Naughty Dog studio, is striking out on her own. After EA shut down Visceral Games she left the company in January to start her "own little independent studio," according to GamesIndustry.biz. "I would love to have a little company of about six to eight people, 15 at the most, and then do smaller projects," she told journalists gathered at Barcelona's Gamelab.

It's the end of an era for fans of Naughty Dog's games. Bruce Straley, best-known as the co-director (along with Neil Druckmann) of The Last of Us and Uncharted 4, is leaving the studio after 18 years. Straley hasn't explained the reasons behind the move (he doesn't have "anything to announce just yet,") but it's not for a lack of affection for the studio -- this is the "hardest decision" he ever made in his career.

We've been looking forward to Uncharted: The Lost Legacy for a while, and we know many of you have as well. That's why we're excited about Naughty Dog's announcement today. They've released roughly 14 minutes of gameplay from the August release that features the two main characters exploring the Western Ghats. It's the biggest peek at the game we've gotten so far.

Deep in the mountainous region of India's Western Ghats, Chloe and Nadine are in trouble. The two treasure hunters have a clue to the whereabouts of the Tusk of Ganesha, a mystical artefact, but keep stumbling into an Indian rebel leader called Asav. They try to stay hidden, but are quickly discovered by soldiers out on patrol. Chaos ensues as the pair battle through enemy forces with a mixture of sharp-shooting and air-drop knockouts. It's classic Uncharted combat, the kind Naughty Dog has been perfecting since Drake's Fortune in 2007.

11 years after its release, Sony has finally stopped shipping the PlayStation 3 to retailers in Japan. We all knew this day was coming, with the country ceasing production on the 500 GB standard model in December last year. Now, however, a recent update on PlayStation Japan's website suggests that the final lingering units have all been shipped. For those who somehow still haven't bought one, Sony's long-standing game machine is still being produced in other parts of the world.

'Uncharted' movie will star Sony's new 'Spider-Man,' Tom Holland

The fabled Uncharted film is getting closer to reality -- for real, this time. After finding a new director in Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum, Stranger Things), Deadline reports that the movie will be a prequel to the popular PlayStation games. And, even more surprising, Sony is bringing on Tom Holland, its new Spider-Man lead, to play young Nathan Drake. Since this is a complete shift for the film, the studio will also have to bring in a new writer to pen an entirely new script. Basically, be prepared to wait even longer for the Uncharted film.

There's a new Uncharted. Well, a new story chapter at least. Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, from the looks of it, is a lot like The Last of Us: Left Behind. Meaning, it's a standalone story that fleshes out characters from the main game in a new way. The video that debuted on the PlayStation Experience stage showed a robed woman walking through a middle Eastern street, following instructions for a meet up by text message — only to be double crossed on a rooftop.

Sony Pictures has announced that Shawn Levy will be directing the live-action movie version of Uncharted. If the name sounds familiar, Levy was the executive producer and director of Netflix hit Stranger Things, and while he'll still be involved in the show's second season, he'll now also be in charge of Nathan Drake's big-screen debut -- one of the PlayStation's most cinematic franchises.
