Whether that means deleting social media from your devices on the weekends (like we discussed in a previous episode) or trying out a new app for meditation, we're all looking for some answers. This week, I'm welcoming onto the show Dan Harris, co-anchor of Nightline, the weekend edition of Good Morning America on ABC, and author of 10% Happier. In his high-stress job, he faced a lot of similar pressures, and turned to meditation to bring back some balance. It's not all crystals and incense, trust me. Like many of you, I have a curious mind. We're interested in technology, sure; but there's so much more to our culture these days than just gadgets and OS updates. Technology intersects with nearly every part of our lives: from medicine to art, etiquette and sports, food and love. When the team at Engadget asked me to come create a new show with them, it was this idea that was stuck in my mind. I wanted to make a series that helps us navigate this uncharted terrain. Technology is evolving so quickly that we (humans, most of us) may not be adapting fast enough. We haven't figured out the social mores. The rulebooks haven't been rewritten yet. We're kind of just figuring it out as we go. Like, what's the deal with the poop emoji, anyway? You know, the important stuff.

  • Armikrog stop-motions you toward a Kickstarter from Neverhood vets

    05.28.2013

Pencil Test Studios, a company manned by one of the designers and two of the artists responsible for 1996's classic The Neverhood, is seeking $900,000 in crowdsourced funding via Kickstarter in order to fuel the creation of its new claymation point-and-click adventure project, Armikrog. While story details are sparse, the game's overall premise is pretty straightforward: Tommynaut, a space explorer, and Beak-Beak, his blind, talking alien dog, crash land onto a "weird planet" and are somehow imprisoned in a fortress called "Armikrog." Assuming it's fully funded, the game will be available in both Steam and DRM-free flavors for PC, OSX and Linux. In addition to being helmed by Neverhood alumni Doug TenNapel, Mike Dietz and Ed Schofield, Armikrog will also feature a soundtrack scored by Neverhood/Skullmonkeys composer Terry S. Taylor, in addition to voice work by Mystery Science Theater 3000/RiffTrax's Michael J. Nelson, Napoleon Dynamite's Jon Heder, Rob Paulsen of every cartoon from your childhood, Tekzilla's Veronica Belmont and PvPOnline's Scott Kurtz.

Qore completes its run with this month's episode, with an April installment focused on Sorcery, Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, Prototype 2, and, naturally, a retrospective on Qore itself. The downloadable show launched in summer 2008, providing previews of upcoming PS3 games and interactive minigame content, and was available as a subscription service, a per-episode purchase, or a PlayStation Plus perk.Speaking of minigame content, the final episode contains an "Ultimate Arqade" that compiles 11 minigames included with previous episodes. Seeing this show go away two weeks after the finale of Nintendo Week makes us feel like the console generation is starting to wrap up.

Welcome to Growing Up Geek, a new feature where we take a look back at our youth, and tell stories of growing up to be the nerds that we are. We're happy to kick off the series with Veronica Belmont. I was born in the year of the ColecoVision. This isn't that unusual or interesting until you factor in that my mother was a VP at Coleco at that time. OK, well, it's still probably not that interesting unless you're me and trying to figure out the defining moments that turned you into a "geeky" adult. An abundance of video games, toys, puzzles, board games... it's a pretty awesome environment to grow up in, especially for a kid whose father also happened to work in the toy industry (he was an engineer for Hasbro in those days). For me, it was just totally normal to walk into the living room and see a pile of toys on the floor, in varying states of production and disarray. I'd take them apart, put them back together, and spend hours trying to find different ways to destroy them. Things haven't changed too much.

  • Flickr Find: iPhone cubism

    by

    09.02.2008

This little glitch has never happened to my iPhone, though I wish it had -- there's a glitch in the iPhone's camera that will occasionally cause it to slice up pictures like this, and our friend Veronica Belmont created a whole pool of the glitchy photos called iPhone cubism. Of course, if you want a picture of your little girl, it's more frustrating than anything else, but in an artistic sense, some of the pictures are really benefited by the random slicing. As if the iPhone didn't do enough, now it's throwing some art into the mix.Of course, it's a bug, not a feature. Since several people are reporting this as a problem after 2.0 was released, we're guessing it's a software issue, perhaps a problem with syncing the little light sensor chip in the iPhone's camera. If you have some great pictures of this stuff, throw them into the pool on Flickr, and hopefully for the less artistic (and less bug-patient) among us, Apple will get this fixed soon. Thanks, Jason!

  • WoW Insider Show's Turpster on How I Wow

    08.15.2008

Somehow, our good friend Turpster has scammed his way was invited on to another podcast, Patrick and Shawn from How I WoW -- a podcast that interviews "interesting people from all walks of life" -- wrangled him into their virtual studio for a long chat about what he's working lately, including our little show, his work with Turpstervision, his musical makings, and his upcoming movie and book, Why I Are teh Best (strangely, they didn't touch on his new fashion line, but that's not coming out 'till the fall anyway). It's a long podcast, and they hit on all kinds of things (from the issues over the leaked Wrath alpha to what kinds of games Turpster's girlfriend beats him at), so definitely give it a listen. How I WoW (both Patrick and Shawn are regulars on The Instance, another popular WoW podcast) has been doing a lot of good stuff so far -- they chatted with our friend Veronica Belmont a little while ago, as well as Felicia Day from The Guild, and they sat down with Curt Schilling a while back to talk Warcraft (and a little bit about the WoW Insider Show, I understand, even if not by name). They've offered a lot of fun indepth looks at people around the WoW community, and not surprisingly, Turpster turns out to be no exception. It's definitely cool to get a look at the man behind the T.

  • Qore's Veronica Belmont makes Playboy's list of hottest bloggers

    08.05.2008

Imagine how many more hits we would've gotten if we chose our alternate headline, "Qore's Veronica Belmont featured in Playboy." But, that would've been misleading. The host of PlayStation's monthly video magazine won't be posing nude in an upcoming issue. Rather, she's been (rightfully) recognized as one of the web's hottest bloggers. On that list includes Boing Boing's Xeni Jardin, Rocketboom's Amanda Congdon, and TV Squad's former Brigitte Dale. It's a hard act to balance being beautiful and being a nerd ... yet Belmont has succeeded. Congrats to her rather unusual (but nonetheless flattering) accolade.(Don't forget to check her out in "our very own episode of Qore.")[Thanks, Peter!]Editor's Note: We are linking to the official Playboy website. The content of the article is safe for work, but viewer discretion is still advised.
