  • Webcomic Holiday Postcard Fundraiser returns for 2009

The internet has become the de facto way to send send half-hearted holiday greetings, but why not class it up this year? Why not buy some cards from the Webcomic Holiday Postcard Fundraiser, the perfect way to say "I acknowledge you have not yet died, but I'm certainly not going to buy you anything." Not only will the money go to help Child's Play, but most of the cards (illustrated by webcomic artists like Scott Ramsoomair of VGCats fame) are so pretty the recipient may feel like they've gotten a gift and will, in turn, feel obligated to get you something. And that, friends, is what Christmas is all about.

Eliciting over 100 comments for the post, Scott Ramsoomair's "Waiting" VG Cats comic was certainly one of the more debated wins of the webcomic wrapup series.Second and third place both go to 2P Start ("A Different Directive" and "Goomba vs. Roomba", respectively -- remember, we want you to vote for individual strips and not the webcomic series itself). A special nod goes to Monday Night Crew's George Carlin tribute. Thanks to everyone who voted and be sure to let us know of any game-related webcomics you stumble upon this week!

We couldn't help but laugh at VG Cats' recent tribute to the Ace Attorney series. Those of you who've never played a Phoenix Wright game will find this strip confusing (and downright scary), but those of you who are fans of Capcom's lawyering franchise will certainly enjoy it. That is, once you recover from seeing Edgeworth and the Judge in a way that might traumatize you.Just click on the image above to see the strip in full. Also, check here to see an alternate version of the comic (it's the same strip, but with a different final frame).

That initial glitch in the webcomic wrapup polling didn't affect the final vote. VG Cats' Poké-strip (as in comic strip and not ... eww) was given the rather dubious award for week's best game-related webcomic with quadruple (make it quadruple!) the vote of second place.Runners up include Dueling Analogs and Digital Unrest, respectively. One hundred Kirby amalgams make for one hundred different avatars. Special thanks to VG Cats' Scott Ramsoomair for the Grim Fandango-inspired Kirby. As prize, we (and the Joystiq voters) crown the strip best webcomic of the week.Second and third place go to 2P Start (another great source of avatars) and Penny Arcade, respectively. By quite a large margin, Scott Ramsoomair's VG Cats took the top spot in the webcomic wrapup this week -- but is it a love for Valve's amazing game Portal or a fascination with endangered infants that drove our readers en masse to vote?Second and third place go to Penny Arcade and 2P Start, respectively. Scott Ramsoomair's VG Cats has caused more than a few commenters to overdose (har har) in dismay, but nonetheless it was the voted the best game-related webcomic this week. Second place goes to Hijinks Ensue, followed by Three Panel Soul in third. We're awarding Ctrl+Alt+Del an honorable mention since we should have put them in the running but subsequently overlooked them in the selection process. While some may scoff at the scatological references in this week's VG Cats, the life-or-death (literally) decisions of what to put in Life's Great Skill Slots boosted Scott Ramsoomair's VG Cats into a very strong lead in this week's webcomic wrapup. The silver trophy goes to Dueling Analogs, and Penny Arcade just edges out over the competition for bronze. Second place goes to Truck Bearing Kibble and Penny Arcade is shucking third. Thanks to everyone who voted, and be sure to let us know of any game-related webcomics you stumble upon this week!

  • DS Daily: The great war

No, we don't mean World War II, but considering every third game made these days revolves around that great war, we can forgive you if you made that assumption. No, we're talking about the never-ending conflict between the DS and the PSP, and we're wondering: where does it come from? Sure, we see a lot of fanboys arguing back and forth about the home consoles. We've heard thousands of iterations on the 360-vs-PS3-vs-Wii theme, but the whole PSP vs. DS issue is somewhat different. It seems to be a created beast.Oh, don't get us wrong. We're not above ribbing the other guys occasionally, just as they'll sometimes poke fun at us. That's just part of owning any piece of video game hardware, it seems. But in reality, the "war" isn't very vicious ... though to look at advertising and the media, one would think that DS fans are at war with PSP fans, and DS fans have always been at war with PSP fans. Maybe we just have stars in our eyes. This recent VG Cats strip certainly makes us giggle; that poor, weepy PSP just looks so forlorn. But is it an accurate depiction? You tell us.

It's the picture that sells it, really, and presentation can be just as important in a webcomic as content. Despite the usual, numerous objections in the comment section, Scott Ramsoomair's VG Cats strip took the top spot as the week's best webcomic.Coming in second place was the second Penny Arcade strip, "Retreat to the Citadel," (we favored the first strip, ourselves) while third place went to Ctrl+Alt+Del. What a fitting way to send off the 300 "This is Sparta!" gag by honoring one of the best gaming representations of the joke -- namely, Scott Ramsoomair's VG Cats. Second place goes to Rooster Teeth and third place belongs to Slackerz. Thanks to everyone who voted; now that we've seen pretty much every noun possible as a replacement for "Sparta," any repeat of the gag would have to be really clever for us to consider it. (And no, you can't get away with simply replacing the subject and/or verb.) Be sure to let us know of any gaming comics you stumble upon this week!

VG Cats may not be the most universally loved comic out there, but we have to admit, we sorta dig it ... especially when Nintendo mascots take the spotlight, as with the latest strip. 300 parodies may be everywhere (and oh, they are), but this one's worth it. Don't think the above is the payoff, either. The payoff is much better; after all, there's not enough beard in this panel for it to be the best part. We're gonna start linking this every time the anti-Nintendo hordes descend and start screaming about the evil that is the Wii.

Scott Ramsoomair's VG Cats has a new page: a Metal Gear Solid MySpace profile for "David" Snake (screen name solidsnake34). Some of the jokes are subtle; we recommend a viewing or two of Metal Gear Awesome for some clarity. (MGA may in fact not help at all, but we still recommend viewing it for a few chortles.) In case you're wondering and are too lazy to do some minor investigation, every link on the page directs you to VG Cats' real index. If you're viewing this after April 1, the page may be gone; feel free to use this gallery below as a time capsule for the event.%Gallery-2382%

In the event of a tie, the supreme dictator has the right to choose which comic he deems most worthy, and therefore I am deigning the rare victor Fanboys Online the best webcomic of the week over the often favorite VG Cats (Sorry, Scott 1, but Scott 2 doesn't nearly get the same amount of recognition.) Third place goes to Dueling Analogs' clever mashup of some of our favorite games.Last week's list was over-indulgent, and we intend to purge it of its gluttonous weight and trim according to quality. We have a better idea of what the readers enjoy, but we will ultimately leave the selection up to supreme dictators (read: us). We promise to always showcase the little guys as much as possible, so as not to become a perpetual fistfight amongst the top 5 gaming comics. With that said, thanks to everyone who voted and be sure to let us know of any game-related comics you stumble upon this week!
