We've been somewhat critical of Sega's Viking: Battle for Asgard in the past, but we're pretty impressed with the newest round of screens Sega's released. These new screens feature more of the visceral head chompin' violence that we've seen in the past, but they also show off the game's impressive use of explosions and lighting. Also check out the massive battles. Pretty nice, huh? %Gallery-6254%

After seeing these newly released Viking: Battle for Asgard screens, it's a wonder that Sega doesn't have a mailbox full of lawsuits from all the other franchises that have "inspired" the game. We've already seen how suspiciously close the game's bad guys look to that of Peter Jackson's orcs, but you can also make the case that the game's giants look a lot like the El Gigantes from Resident Evil 4, too. But hey, we're probably just nitpicking, right? The real story here is that Battle for Asgard appears to feature some really epic battles that are sure to be loads of fun, and these screens prove that. And even if the game is borrowing heavily from a few well-established franchises, at least they know who they should be emulating. %Gallery-6254%

Eurogamer has revealed the European release dates for the first quarter releases from Sega. Most notable to us, of course, are the 360 games on the list. Probably the biggest title on the list is Condemned 2: Bloodshot, the sequel to one of the 360's better launch titles, which releases March 14 across the pond. The other titles on the list are as follows: The Club - February 8 Universe at War - March 7 Viking: Battle for Asgard - March 28 SEGA Superstars Tennis - March 28 Naturally, we can expect that these titles should hit North America at approximately the same time. Anyone out there looking forward to any of these titles?

Sure, we've played games with basically the same premise, location and enemies as Viking: Battle for Asgard, but one thing's for certain, we haven't grown tired of them yet. Battle for Asgard is shaping up to be a must-buy, and with The Creative Assembly, which is responsible for the excellent Total War series, at the helm, we're confident that it will deliver the goods. The game has a spring 2008 release date, which is great, because we should finally be finished with our immense backlog of games to devote our attention to it.

Sega has announced a new bloody action/adventure game based in Norse mythology, titled Viking: Battle for Asgard. Planned for release on both the PS3 and the 360 in 2008, the game has you playing a violent warrior attempting to fend off an undead army bent on bringing about Ragnarok. Screenshots show a huge amount of onscreen characters and what appears to be two distinct forces -- so it looks like you may end up fighting in real battles, not God of War-esque 'one man against the world' type gameplay. Sega has announced plans to bring Viking: Battle for Asgard from Creative Assembly (Spartan: Total Warrior) to the Xbox 360 and PS3. The game centers around the exploits of Skarin, a warrior chosen by the gods to defend the mortal realm from a rampaging goddess. The goddess, you see, is a little miffed that Odin kicked her out of Asgard, the home of the gods in Norse mythology. As such, she has seen fit to raise an army of undead vikings and let them do what they do best: wreak havoc. It's Skarin's job to put a stop to all this of course, and he will command soldiers and mythical beasts in order to do so. Naturally, he's not shy about busting heads himself either. Sounds like good times to us. Viking will be making an appearance in Leipzig later this week, so expect impressions to start hitting the net soon. In the meantime, hit the "read" link for more info and head over to Xboxygen for the first screens of Viking.Pirates, ninjas, and vikings? What did we ever do to deserve all this?

Someday, Blizzard will wise up and realize that they're wasting their time with World of Warcraft and Starcraft 2. What they'll someday realize is that the Lost Vikings IP is where the real money's at. Until that sweet day of vindication though, we have to placate ourselves with other Viking-themed titles, such as Sega's newly-announced Viking: Battle for Asgard, due on the Xbox 360 and PS3 in early 2008.In the hack-and-slash, which is being developed by Creative Assembly of Spartan: Total Warrior fame, you'll play as Skarin, a viking defending his people from an encroaching army of undead Vikings and an evil goddess. Expect to hear more about the game during the Leipzig Games Convention this week. Expect to hear about more about a new Lost Vikings exclusively in our dreams.
