  • AAPL down after disappointing WWDC Keynote

AAPL shares were down almost 3% to 121.40 just minutes after Steve Jobs wrapped up his World Wide Developer Conference 2007 keynote. The keynote failed to deliver any wild or exciting news, instead offering participants an advanced look at Apple's new 10.5 Leopard operating system features and Apple's port of its Safari web browser to Windows. Many participants had hoped that Apple would deliver a full third party software developer kit for its upcoming iPhone. Instead, Apple suggested developers work on Web 2.0/Ajax solutions for iPhone.

Michael Yurechko has compiled a list of websites that will host live WWDC 07 updates. Sites include Engadget, LoopRumors, MacRumors Live and more. In addition, we at TUAW will be keeping an eye on the ongoing events and will publish a "metaliveblog" with the latest news as we hear it. It looks like the live audio feed we posted about earlier today has already crashed from too much interest.

TUAW is pleased to bring you this Man-on-the-Spot report live from Moscone West Hi Michael Hi Can you tell me what it looks like over there at Moscone West? What's the mood like? It's certainly the best-behaved and most MacBook Pro saturated crowd I've ever seen People have been lining up since 5.30 in the moring. I personally arrived at 6 am, and there already were a few hundred people waiting on the sidewalk. People are discussing the news that's coming, throwing crazy ideas around. Others are discussing their jobs and why they are here. Nobody seems bored. They keep the crowd moving through the building. I'm in the first 5 percent or so of the line, and we are now up the escalators. But there already were at least 200 people here when I arrived A nice touch: When you get up to the second level, they have free catering for the participants, and there were some funny scenes with people trying to grab a muffin, taking pictures and running along to keep at their place in the line at the same time. What rumors are flying through the air right now at Moscone? I've heard something about a new Finder. Appears to be called "Mighty Finder" this is from "a reliable source" but I think it's just a crazy rumor. I don't have any inside information! What are the other hot rumor topics/hot topics of speculation out there? Only the stuff that's out on the web anyway. As for the line, right now we're no longer moving. People are even sitting around on tables, typing away at least at the top of the line, where I'm right now.

  • Apple's Mac OS X Leopard fully unveiled

    06.11.2007

No matter what rampant rumors have been tossed around, we always knew there was going to be one main attraction to WWDC 2007: a feature-complete version of Leopard. Steve Jobs and co. didn't disappoint, announcing 10 of the "300 new features of the OS."1. New Desktop - First off is the new desktop, featuring a new menu bar, a snazzed up dock and "Stacks" to help you keep your desktop clean. For instance, there's a default Stack that collects all your downloads in one place on the dock. 2. New Finder - More on the aesthetics side, Apple is going with a unified look for apps, which nixes the brushed metal style and instead mimics the current iTunes theme -- surprise, surprise. In fact, the new Finder looks and performs almost exactly like iTunes, all the way down to integrated Cover Flow for shuffling through your files. You can also save smart searches in the "playlists" side of the interface. On the back end of things, Leopard includes "Back to my Mac," which keeps track of your home Mac's IP address through various (and secure!) magicks, letting you browse your files remotely as if they were on a local network. Spotlight search also works over networks now, as expected.3. Quick Look - Another new Finder integrated function, Quick Look lets you open up previews of most common document types without opening the respective app, and unsupported doc types can be added through extensions.Keep reading for the rest!

  • WWDC07 keynote transcript leaked? We think not.

    06.11.2007

Rabid seems to be the norm today, not the exception. Funny, considering the fact that not too many groundbreaking announcements are expected for today's Steve Jobs keynote, just a general re-commitment to the Mac platform and a few Leopard and iPhone surprises. Maybe a couple new iMacs and some Google / .Mac love, but even that's stretching it. So what's a fanboy to do with such paltry news? Make some up, of course! Recently "leaked" through some German sources, a keynote "transcript" has already made it out onto the internets, promising the aforementioned announcements, along with an iPhone "secret feature" of iWork, iLife and .Mac integration. The real kicker, and the near certain clincher of this report's fallacy, is the "one more thing" announcement. As if that line wasn't played enough as it is, the transcript unveils the iPhone@home, which features a 10-inch multitouch screen, 30GB of flash memory (?!?), 8 hours of battery, "no connections except dock connector," integrated iSight, iChat... you know, every fanboy's dream in a nutshell. Yeah, we're not holding our breath.[Via TUAW]

iPhone Alley has just announced that it will be streaming the WWWDC keynote audio. The keynote is due to start at 10AM Pacific and run until 11:30AM. The posting over at the site suggests that the streaming is both experimental (so there may be technical difficulties) and will have limited spots available (so get there early).

  • Not buying the keynote 'outline'

As Mike just posted, a German site claims to have The Steve's bullet points for tomorrow's WWDC keynote. Although this outline has a lot of things that appeal to me (especially the "One More Thing"), I'm just not buying into it. Wouldn't a WWDC keynote contain a lot more about Leopard? And about the new and fabulous Xcode improvements?Besides, iPhone@home just doesn't make sense. Why @home? A bigger screen, no keyboard? That would be something to use on the road, not at home. After all, AppleTV is in the living room. Where would iPhone@home live? In the kitchen? Maybe it comes with magnets pre-installed so it can live on my fridge. And 60GB of flash memory? That sounds like it would cost about $3000 for a keyboard-less tablet computer. I'm just not buying it. Much as I want the iNewton, I don't think this bullet point list is legit.

RoughlyDrafted has posted the first pictures of posters up at WWDC 2007-- the event of course doesn't start until Monday, but Apple is already starting to plaster the Moscone Center West with tasty morsels of what we might see there next week. As you can see, it looks like Leopard is not surprisingly going to take center stage-- the long banner in the pic above specifically references Time Machine (there's even a little logo just left of the star).Unfortunately, there's no reference to any of the "secret features"-- MacOSXHints rounded up a good poll of what we might see there. Since I wasn't around to make predictions the other day, I'll drop one right now: like Gruber, I think Leopard will be beautifully resolution independent. Yeah, I know, not too far out on the limb, but I just got here, so I'm playing it safe.Update: Commenter iwit helpfully points out a flickr page with even more shots.%Gallery-3780%

  • WWDC 2007 banners caught on camera, reveal absolutely nothing

    06.07.2007

Here it comes, that periodic rush of excitement brought on by Apple event banners being put up by unwitting convention center workers, prompting rabid discussion and even on that rare occasion actual product knowledge. Unfortunately, none of that to see here, unless you want to try and read into the starry backgrounds on the Leopard posters, or the particular shade of white being used for the Apple logo. Be our guest, we've got bigger, more historic fish to fry. Keep reading for another shot of the action, the source link was down the last time we checked.[Thanks, Otsego_Undead]

  • WWDC Jobsnote to run three hours?

    04.17.2007

As the days grow longer and Mother Nature finishes shaking off the last remnants of a cold, dark winter, a young man's fancy naturally turns to Apple's upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference starting June 11th, and if a recent update to the gathering's official site proves accurate, this year's keynote is gonna be a doozy. Apple Insider points out that the newly-posted WWDC schedule shows a three-hour chunk of time blocked out for the Monday morning Jobsnote -- a mighty feat even for such a seasoned public speaker -- which could indicate an unusually long speech filled with Leopard revelations, shiny new toys, and lots of "un-be-lievables." Still, no matter what goes down, the main takeaway here is that we may be in for three straight hours of liveblogging. Have fun, Ryan![Via Apple Insider]Update: Apple called to let us know that there was a typo on the schedule page, and the keynote is actually 10-11:30AM -- so an hour and a half, not three hours. Somewhere Ryan just let out a huge sigh of relief. (Apple also mentioned Jobs wasn't guaranteed to present, but c'mon, he wouldn't really hold out on us like that, would he?)

Apple's World Wide Developer Conference is just around the corner (June 11 through June 15 in San Francisco) and you know what that means! A chance for us rabid Mac users to paw through the session descriptions, which have just been posted, to see if we can glean any info about the forthcoming update to OS X, Leopard.Apple has also posted details about a Scientific Development Poster Session that will be happening during WWDC. They are looking for folks who have solved a scientific problem using Apple technology to show off their stuff during WWDC. Abstracts must be submitted by May 11th.
