William Shatner and technology go way back, but it's taken him until today to get his own smartphone app. Then again, he is a man known to take long pauses. Dubbed Shatoetry, the new app (iPhone-only, for the moment) lets you string together a variety of pre-recorded words -- each with three different versions -- and have the resulting "Shatism" read aloud by Shatner himself. You're then able to send the message to your friends through all the usual means, or even take advantage of a co-op mode that lets you collaborate on a phrase. Of course, spoken word Shatner on-demand doesn't come free -- the app will set you back $2.99.

  • IGN discovers the Aubrey Plaza WoW commercial that never aired

Does anyone remember those World of Warcraft "What's your game?" commercials? They've been around for years, featuring celebrities like Mr. T, William Shatner, Verne Troyer, Ozzy Osbourne, and even a French commercial with Jean-Claude Van Damme. There were two that were introduced last year -- the infamous Chuck Norris commercial, and one done by Aubrey Plaza from Parks and Recreation. I remember liking the Chuck Norris commercial well enough, but the Aubrey Plaza commercial fell a little flat for me. Don't get me wrong, I love Parks and Recreation, but the commercial for WoW didn't seem particularly funny. Well IGN just uncovered an entirely different Aubrey Plaza commercial, one that never aired. Frankly, I think this version is quite a bit funnier than the one originally used, and I'm not sure why they didn't go with it. Perhaps it was just a tad too racy for television? Regardless, you can view the unaired commercial above and decide for yourself. Personally, I like the second version of Aubrey's commercial a lot better -- but then, I'm a fan of silly orc puns. What do you think?

  • Google adds Esperanto as its 64th machine translatable language

Esperanto isn't just something Microsoft uses to tease Google for abandoning video codecs, it's a legitimate, manufactured language. Created in the late 1800's by Dr. Ludwig L. Zamenhof, Esperanto was designed to be an easy to learn language that would help folks from all over the world understand each other. Seeing as how Google Translate shares similar goals, the Mountain View firm felt Zamenhof's homemade tongue would be the perfect fit for its machine translation service. Despite a rather small sample size of pre-existing translated material to feed the Google language machine, the firm says Google Translate handled Esperanto surprisingly well -- partially crediting the language's learner friendly construction for the service's success. Sure, it may not be the most useful addition Google Translate's ever seen, but hey, it gets us one step closer to watching cult classics like Incubus without the subtitles. What's that, you haven't heard of William Shatner's pre-Star Trek, all Esperanto romp? Crack open your machine translator and head past the break, then.

  • William Shatner explains what microprocessors are and do... from way back in 1976

For a man that spent the best part of his acting career representing a savvy dude from the future, William Shatner looks pretty well at home in the past as well. This video, dusted off from AT&T's Tech Channel archives, shows Shatner dressed in a casual tan ensemble and dropping some knowledge on the subject of microprocessors. Aside from the retro visuals and presentation, what's great about the vid is that the seemingly lavish claims about where computers could take us -- and their own move toward increasing importance, utility and ubiquity -- actually seem pretty tame in light of what we know today. Beam yourself past the break to see this golden nugget from the Bell Labs archives. [Thanks, Dan]

  • STO team to be at Star Trek Convention this weekend

The 2010 San Francisco Star Trek Convention is going on this weekend, and tickets are still available at the door, so grab whatever version of the souvenir communicator badge you happen to have and head to the Westin St. Francis Hotel. The convention will have Patrick Stewart and William Shatner, sure, but that's not the really big news. The Star Trek Online team will be in attendance, so keep an eye out for them on the show floor. Should you miss them there, just go to the Swig Bar near Union Square Saturday, where the team will be holding a meet and greet from 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm. For those two hours, they'll be hanging out with fans, talking about Star Trek Online and buying a drink for anyone in a Star Trek Uniform. If you're in the area and a fan of STO, it'll be a fun way to spend a few hours Saturday evening -- have a great time!

  • WoW Moviewatch: Leeroy 4 - The Wailing Caverns

Some movies are created using machinima -- finely honed in-game graphics, tuned to tell the author's story with sizzling detail. Others are creating using more traditional media, like hand-drawn art. And some, like Leeroy 4 - The Wailing Caverns, are created in Live Action, using nothing more than a pure sense of fun and obvious love of the game. It's the creation of Herculean Productions, and I've rarely had so much fun with a fan film. The acting is over-the-top, scene chewing goodness. I like to think that even William Shatner would be proud of these boys. The story is simple enough to support this kind of shenanigan performance. In a quick summary, Leeroy is putting together a group to go to the Wailing Caverns. This is the LFG phase of that endeavour. The costumes hit the right tone, in my opinion. If the clothes had been much fancier, then they'd be calling into the question the genre of the piece. This isn't meant to be high, Shakespearean art. It's supposed to be funny and tongue-in-cheek. You're not supposed to be gauging things like production values; you're supposed to be having the same kind of fun the actors are having. My hat's off to Leeroy. This was great. Click here to go check it out yourself. If you have any suggestions for WoW Moviewatch, you can mail them to us at machinima AT wowinsider DOT com.Previously on Moviewatch ..

  • Star Trek Online not getting that quirky Captain Kirk smirk

Alas, in case any dear readers were holding out hope for some kind of time traveling Captain Kirk appearance in Star Trek Online, we're here to inform you that it probably isn't going to happen. MTV Multiplayer's Tracey John sat down with STO's executive producer Craig Zinkievich last weekend at NYCC and got the goods on both Shatner's absence from the game, as well as some intriguing cross-platform information. So yes, no Kirk. However, it seems like Cryptic is not against the idea of dropping console and PC players into the same server. While no revelations were given about which (both?) console would see the game, apparently both Sony and Microsoft are excited at the prospect. ZInkievich stressed that ultimately their choice will have a lot to do with how certification for patches is handled. It's certainly a touchy subject, but Final Fantasy XI seems to have handled itself well on the Xbox 360. If we had to throw down a guess, it would be that we're likely to see the game his Microsoft's console at the very least. But until Cryptic makes an announcement, everyone will just have to assume they'll be boldly clicking, etc, etc.

First David Hasselhoff, now William Shatner? If VG247's supposed PlayStation Network calendar is to be believed, Star Trek star and Priceline.com spokesperson William Shatner will be the next celebrity offered for download in PAIN. SCEE hasn't confirmed the validity of this information, only saying "the PSN roadmap is for internal purposes" and "it's all subject to change." VG247 notes the Shatner addon will be available on March 19th.[Via Joystiq]

Whether commanding starships or green aliens into bed, there's no mistaking William Shatner, even if he is a greasy smear on the side of a building. The man who invented the Corbomite Maneuver will soon put his body in players' hands in PAIN, reports videogaming247.While still unconfirmed, Shatner's ragdoll alter ego would join The Hoff as the latest celebrity to be broken by the -- true fact! -- most popular PSN title ever. James T. Kirk is scheduled to smash into Sony Europe's PSN on March 19th, though a Sony representative tells us the release schedule "is for internal purposes only" and "subject to change." Khaaaan you believe it?

Parodies of the WoW commercials featuring William Shatner, Mr. T, Jean Claude van Damme, Verne Troyer, and Willy Toledo are so last month. Apparently Ari Rosenberg didn't get the memo. Viewers be warned that this does contain some offensive language. It's true that you can be anyone you want to be on the internet. In Ari's world, he's a night elf pimp. I wonder if his mom knows he's slapping around his sister on YouTube?(Edit: Ari decided to add "What's your game?" to the ending, so he re-uploaded the video.)Previously on Moviewatch...

I have no shame reblogging the new WoW commercials. Van Damme apparently plays a well... He needs to reroll, what a noob."My name is Jean-Claude Van Damme... and I am a mage. Hand-to-hand combat for me: it's over! Now I can cast powerful spells! Just try messing with me... I'll turn you into a sheep. A sheep! Because we all are a bit like sheep, you know... I am Jean-Claude Van Damme, I am a mage. And you? What's your game?"Mages are nothing but vending machines and sheepish freaks. I was expecting some high roundhouse kicks in there -- at least he picked a Troll. Donjohn, commented at WoW Insider, providing some additional notes that pertain to the inside-jokes for zi'French. Van Damme frequently uses English words in his oft-butchered French sentences The line on everyone being like sheep might tie into numerous interviews with JCVD's rhapsodic views about the world [Willy Toledo and further comments after the break]

  • Mr. T and William Shatner appear in WoW commercials [Updated]

William Shatner and Mr. T are appearing in two new World of Warcraft TV commercials. All Blizzard needs is the Hoff and it'll have the holy trinity of cheese! This is without a doubt one of the most awesome things we've yet reported. Mr. T talks about his "Night Elf Mohawk." William Shatner players a Shaman and wears a goofy looking robe. It's exactly as funny as you'd expect, and it will be broadcast nationally soon. Blizzard announced that Verne Troyer -- aka "Minime" -- will be recording a commercial as well.World of Warcraft players have already been littering guild chat with "I pity the fool who specs survival on his Hunter!" and taking screenshots of their characters screaming "KHAAAAAAN!" at the sky. So it goes without saying that these commercials will probably go over quite well.[EDIT: We have the videos here for your viewing pleasure! Shatner is above, and Mr. T is just behind the jump.]
