X-Files' resurgence isn't just limited to new TV episodes. Fox has taken the wraps off of X-Files: Deep State, a mystery title for Android, iOS and Facebook that should arrive February 6th, 2018, or just over a month after the January 3rd TV premiere. You'll fill the shoes of an FBI agent finding clues, solving puzzles and grilling witnesses between seasons 9 and 10 (during the alien invasion timeline). There's an element of Telltale's serialized storytelling to it with decisions affecting the storyline and new cases showing up every month.

In the run up to the NFL's conference championships, ABC and CW have loaded up tonight with comic book TV. ABC has a celebration of 75 years of Captain America leading into the Agent Carter premiere, while CW has Justice League action. FX is premiering a new series from Zach Galifianakis called Baskets, while Netflix has its Chelsea Does documentary series this weekend. On Blu-ray, it's time for Straight Outta Compton, as well as a Criterion release of Oscar Isaac in Inside Llewyn Davis. Gamers can revisit the world of Resident Evil on new consoles with some re-releases, as well as a new edition of A Boy and His Blob. Oh, and on Sunday night some show called The X-Files is coming back for a few episodes. You might be interested. New episodes of The X-Files are almost here. Let that sink in for a moment. The show is coming back for a special six-episode event on January 24, and now we've got the final trailer to whet your appetite. It features a bit more footage than the last trailer, and it hints at an NSA-like government surveillance plotline. Mulder was the original Snowden, after all. Reviews of the premiere episode were mixed, but critics say the new series quickly gets on track. For now, mark your calendars and watch the skies.

The new X-Files won't air until next year, but fans can grab the entire existing series run on Blu-ray this week. Available in both a complete series set and as individual seasons, it has every episode (plus 26 hours of extras) available in widescreen with surround sound. The other big Blu-ray release is Marvel's second Cinematic Universe collection, ready to set you up with it's last round of movies. This week Netflix is also presenting its first movie with Adam Sandler, and yes, it's the one with jokes so bad they caused a dozen Native American actors to walk off the set. A better option on streaming is probably season two of Amazon's critically-acclaimed series Transparent. Otherwise there's a slew of fall finales on TV, plus the series finale of The League. Look after the break to check out each day's highlights, including trailers and let us know what you think (or what we missed).

The wait is nearly over, X-Files fans! We're just a few short months from the debut of the new X-Files. Like the original series, this six episode mini-season is being produced by Chris Carter. David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson reprise their lead roles as Mulder and Scully while many of the show's supporting cast (like the Cigarette-Smoking Man and FBI Director Skinner) will also reportedly be making appearances. The new series launches on January 24th, immediately following the NFC Championship game.

Back in March, Fox confirmed that FBI agents Mulder and Scully would return to television, and now we know when. The network announced that The X-Files six-episode run will begin on January 24th at 10 PM ET, following the NFL's NFC Championship Game. There's sure to be a load of interested viewers already marking down the date, but Fox is looking to rope in a few more by debuting the miniseries right after a big playoff game. The show's premiere is a two-night event with the second episode following on Monday, January 25th at 8 PM ET in what will be the regular time slot. If you'll recall, show creator Chris Carter will handle director and executive producer duties while David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson reprise their roles as the Bureau's paranormal investigating duo. Yep, it's happening -- if not quite in the way you might expect. After a flurry of rumors, Fox has confirmed that it's bringing The X-Files back to TV as a six-episode "event series" arriving this summer. It won't be the full-on relaunch some fans were hoping for, then. However, show creator Chris Carter will once again take the reins, and both David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson will reprise their signature roles as paranormal investigators Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. It's not clear what prompted the return to TV after a 13-year hiatus, although it wouldn't be shocking if actor Kumail Nanjiani's X-Files Files podcast helped rekindle interest in the show. For us, the real question is whether or not it'll be as good as the original run. Carter thrived while X-Files and Millennium were on the air, but his 21st-century projects haven't had as much success.

Game industry veterans Jonathan Burroughs and Terry Kenny have formed independent studio Variable State, and are currently working on an interactive drama called Virginia. Inspired by 90s TV shows such as The X-Files, Twin Peaks and The Outer Limits, Virginia follows an FBI agent as she hunts down a missing boy. "Virginia is a first person interactive drama," Variable State writes. "It is the story of a recently graduated FBI agent and her partner as they seek to uncover the mystery surrounding the disappearance of a young boy. In the birthplace of America, nothing is quite what it seems." Burroughs, a writer and designer, has worked at DeepMind Technologies, Relentless Software, Rare and EA, contributing on House of the Dead: Overkill and Battlefield 2: Modern Combat. Kenny is an animator and artist who hails from DeepMind Technologies, Headstrong Games, Frontier Developments and Rockstar Games, with credits on House of the Dead: Overkill and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Virginia is due out for PC in 2015. The game's art pieces are simple and intriguing, while the first screenshot shows a crude 3D design that looks like a mix of Jazzpunk and Nintendo's Miis. • The Game Archaeologist: EA's Majestic

"This is not a game. Or is it?" Conspiracy theories and paranoia were hot with pop culture in the 1990s, largely thanks to movies like The Net and TV shows like the X-Files, which had the tagline of "I want to believe." With the rise of the internet during the decade and the fantastic leaps and bounds technology had been making, people were not only experiencing new ways to play games but also growing suspicious that these tools could have a sinister side. It was into this niche that EA stepped to create an ambitious $20 million project that would fuse massively multiplayer interactivity, the growing variety of technological mediums, and conspiracy theories together. The project was Majestic, an alternate reality game (ARG) that would be the most expensive and highest profile attempt to date. It generated great amounts of interest and publicity, had a promising start, and then flared out hard by the end of 2001. Considering how ARGs and MMOs have crossed paths since, most recently with The Secret World, I wanted to take a closer look at an attempt to develop a game that would run parallel in many ways with the industry that we love today.

As Star Trek franchises go Enterprise may not be TOS or TNG, but it was the first one to be broadcast in HD way back in 2003. The Digital Bits points out that StarTrek.com is letting fans pick box art for Season One and Two sets that will see a release next year, and notes rumors all four seasons could ship before 2014. Since HDTV broadcasts didn't start until the third season this should be an extra treat for devoted followers, however the juiciest rumor listed is the possibility of an X-Files Blu-ray set next year from Fox -- stay tuned.

The FBI has announced that, after 12 years and $600 million, it has finally abandoned paper records in favor of a computerized system called Sentinel. Resembling a browser, it offers question-and-answer forms, case tracking and an ability to share files across the bureau's network. Assistant director Jeffrey Johnson said that the biggest hurdle was convincing paper-loving agents to get on board, so the system is designed to nag users into adding relevant data that's still extant on dead-trees. With any luck, some enterprising young agent will take advantage of the extensive database to find out the real location of Area 51.

  • Researchers remotely control worms using magnetic nanoparticles, tomorrow: people?

Researchers at the University at Buffalo have announced they've found a way to remotely control worms using magnetic nanoparticles attached to cell membranes, and say they can cause the worms to stop moving simply by exposing the particles to a magnetic field and heating them up. This, they say, could lead to a host of medical benefits -- but if The X-Files has taught us anything, it's that remote-controlled nanotechnology can also fall into the wrong hands, and make people stop moving.

  • The Daily Grind: Your favorite MMO pop culture reference?

It seems like no matter which way you turn in many MMOs, you'll eventually find a pop-culture reference nestled in there somewhere. While World of Warcraft may be perhaps the most blunt about using them with quests named after things as varied as a Peter Murphy song and a Kevin Smith movie, we know they're by no means the only designers who have added references. This morning, we thought we'd ask you what some of your favorite MMO pop culture references are? Have you ever run across one that just made you stop and laugh? Shake your head? Anything you think is a pop-culture reference but perhaps aren't quite sure?

People just love those pop-culture references in World of Warcraft! We've seen a bunch of them come in since we opened, but this is probably one of my favorites from Wrath. The above NPC is Agent Skully (obvious reference to the X-Files) sent in to us by Johanis. He added the following tale about that day: As Johanis ran through the New HearthGlen fortress in Dragonblight he found himself face to face with a 75 Elite Onslaught Caretaker by the name of Agent Skully. No Agent Mulder in sight but still on the search for him. I especially liked that she appeared to resemble the other Agent Scully rather remarkably (except the shovel of course)! Of course, Johanis - being Alliance - likely wouldn't know that Skully is actually a member of the Horde in disguise! We know WoW isn't the only game with these types of references in it, so if you've found one in your favorite game, why not send it in? Our email is oneshots AT massively DOT com, and all you have to add is your name, the game, and what the reference is in case our pop-culture-fu isn't as mighty as yours. We'll post it out here and give you the credit for bringing it to One Shots!%Gallery-9798%

  • Scattered Shots: How do you make sense of all the beta hunter changes?

Is the tauren above about to cut off his own head -- or lunge forward to attack? Perhaps he's just feeling confused about upcoming changes to hunters? Would you, too, like to know just what's going to happen to your class? Well, you can rest easy now, because Scattered Shots has all the answers to your most urgent questions. The short answer is: You don't; at the moment there is no making sense of all the Wrath hunter changes. We find ourselves at the mid-point of Blizzard's mysterious scheme for hunters, right in-between significant changes already in-progress and vague changes which they've promised or the future. We remain uncertain about which ones are going to make it live, which will be changed again, and which will be removed or added later on. Any analysis we do right now (and indeed much of the analysis we've already done) may or may not be completely out of date in a matter of days or weeks, and if your head hurts from all the ups and downs of turbulent beta-zone theorycrafting, rest assured that Scattered Shots feels your pain. The long answer is: Even though the jigsaw puzzle isn't complete, it's still a pretty neat picture to look at. Today isn't the day for point-for-point talent analyses plus spreadsheets of sting/shot-damage coefficients -- what a headache that would be. No, today is an opportunity to stand back and look at how all this is beginning to fit together, to see how the path our class is trekking through the wilderness of beta-testing ambiguity solves some of our long-standing problems, gives us more of what makes hunters great, and leaves us with several crucial questions mysteriously unanswered. What follows, ladies and gentauren, are the X-files of hunter beta mysteries, a fuzzy look through the crystal ball into the future of our class, the thrilling buildup to the surprising twist that comes just before the epic climax of the Hunter Saga season finale and leaves you hanging on the edge of your seat, biting on the tip of your fingernails, and gasping for air in the thrall of cliffhanger suspense.
