Sony made much ado over the Xperia Z5 Premium being the first phone with a 4K resolution screen, but at least a few IFA attendees noticed that the device described itself as 1080p. What's the deal -- is Sony trying to pull the wool over your eyes? Yes and no, it turns out. The company tells Phone Arena that you will see photos and videos in glorious 4K, but that "all other content" displays at 1080p or less in order to maintain that vaunted two-day battery life. The compromise is understandable (4K is taxing on a laptop, let alone a smartphone), but it also explains why you haven't seen other companies leap on the technology. Simply put, it's not ready for everyday use. You won't see 'true' 4K phones (that is, where 4K is used at all times) until there's hardware that can handle the resolution without begging for mercy.

  • 4K is boring and other musings on the failures of innovation

The cardinal rule of technology is simple: It must never, ever, under any circumstances, be boring. The engine that motivates consumers to spend hundreds, if not thousands of dollars on a device that's not essential to furthering our lives is all down to the excitement it gives us. That's why IFA 2015, Europe's buttoned-down equivalent to Las Vegas' Consumer Electronics Show, has proved to be a disappointment. The event has been marked by risk-averse and conservative product showcases -- a sentiment that may sound whiny and entitled coming from a member of the tech press, but it's not meant to be. If companies can't create compelling, must-have products, then they simply won't survive. The existential threat these tech companies face is two-fold: consumer apathy and content with the status quo. For most consumers, innovation takes a back seat to products that are merely "good enough."

That was swiftly followed by the launch of Huawei's Mate S, a phone that's designed to kill the iPhone 6 Plus by basically copying its every design feature. Then there was ASUS' new gaming laptop that's so powerful it needs its own water pump to keep it cool. We took some time to bring you the most exciting announcements from the show floor, so don't hesitate before hitting that play button. Check out all the news from Berlin at our IFA 2015 hub!

Sony's incoming Xperia Z5 flagship will be the first smartphone with a 4K screen, according to a leaked video from Clubic.com. In it, Sony's marketing director says the company will release both a 5.2-inch Z5 and 5.5-inch Z5 'Premium,' and the video (below) is focused on the larger model. On top of the 4K screen (which yields over 800 pixels per inch), the device also packs a 23-megapixel camera with a 0.03 second autofocus and 5X digital zoom, confirming a previous leak. The new flagship will be just as waterproof and dustproof as the Xperia Z3+ model, but with an interesting twist -- the micro-USB connector is waterproof, even without a cover.
