Did Dell quietly kill the XPS 730 gaming rig?
We're not claiming that the suits in Round Rock really have a 187 on their hands just yet, but the evidence is mounting. For quite some time, Dell's XPS 730 gaming PC was the outfit's flagship unit, throwing down insane benchmarks and garnering boatloads of cash from those willing to pay the premium for cutting-edge hardware. Now, however, it seems that the lesser XPS 720 is the only classmate remaining, with all links to the 730 leading to soul-crushing "We're Sorry..." pages. To make matters worse, Dell CSRs have apparently been telling inquisitive consumers that they have phased out the 730 and are pushing folks to select an Alienware machine instead. So, do any of you folks know of some backdoor way to keep ordering this here beast, or should we really break out the new Brand New CD and paint our eyelids black in memoriam?[Thanks, Garry]Update: Seems it's still around in some corners of the globe (we're lookin' at you, Canada), so maybe it's just the whiny Americans getting the shaft. Dell's XPS 730 H2C gets benchmarked, overclocked and rated
A general review is fine and dandy when you're lookin' at Hello Kitty laptops, but this is Dell's XPS 730 H2C we're talking about. A rig this big demands to be benchmarked, and the mad scientists over at Hot Hardware did that and a whole lot more after it arrived in their lab. Here's the highlights: reviewers were able to hit 4.25GHz (though not for long), the unit itself walked all over its rivals and it was deemed "an absolute monster in any productivity and multimedia task." Sadly, gaming performance was seen as "less decisive but still extremely impressive," but it nevertheless managed to "blaze" through every title tossed at it. Grab your cup of joe and head on down, as you'll be reading for quite some time before seeing that coveted Editor's Choice award there at the end.
Dell unleashes the pricey XPS 730 and 730 H2C gaming rigs
Apparently Dell is busting out the big, expensive guns with its new gaming rig, the XPS 730 and 730 H2C. The previously outed system is quite serious, utilizing NVIDIA's nForce 790i Ultra SLI chipset, a wide variety of Intel CPUs (ranging from the Core 2 Duo up to the Core 2 Duo Extreme), support for ATI Radeon HD 3870 X2 (CrossFireX) or NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT (SLI) graphics chipsets, up to 8GB of RAM, and the ability to install up to four hard drives in various configurations. The real kicker, however, is the H2C cooling system, which has been "enhanced," so this won't blow up when you're playing Crysis (which runs smoothly at 1920 x 1200 resolution, we're told). HotHardware has a nice unboxing of the beast, and PC Magazine has given a $6,629 configuration a full review, and they didn't come to the sweetest conclusion ever. XPS 730 pops up on Dell's support site
It was kinda-sorta announced at CES and we've already seen some in-the-wild shots, but it looks like Dell's newest gaming PC, the XPS 730, is getting close to release -- it's just gotten an official entry on Dell's support site. Nothing really earth-shattering to be found, except for some hints that it'll ship with either XP or Vista and confirmation that it's triple-SLI ready in the owners manual. Dell XPS 730 H2C spotted in the wild
Ever since that XPS 630 went all mid-level on us we've been on the hunt for a new gamer desktop heartthrob, and it looks like we've found one in the XPS 730 H2C from Dell. This one was semi-announced at CES, and the official image (along with a shot of the innards) is after the break, but a friendly tipster just hooked us up with some spy sots from what we can only assume are the bowels of Dell. The desktop looks to be a worthy successor to the XPS 720, if perhaps a notch down in sexy, uses DDR3 memory, and is "at least" triple SLI ready. Obviously the H2C cooling will be a big draw for overclockers, but we're most excited about all those drive bays in front: floppy RAID here we come! No other specs or release info is available at the moment, but we're sure it'll spill out of Dell soon enough.
