The YouTube Music Awards is finally happening this Monday after taking a year off. There probably won't be spontaneous antics and cake-digging this time, though -- like the Google-owned video website announced in 2014, it's doing away with the traditional awards show format. Instead, it will upload 13 brand new videos on the official awards channel at 1PM Eastern time, with YouTuber Tyler Oakley providing commentary on his own channel. The website's announcement says the videos were created to celebrate the 50 winners, whom it already named a couple of days ago (see below the fold). We have no idea how exactly the awardees will be honored, though... guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Just about this time last year, the folks at YouTube took over Pier 36 in Manhattan to put on an hour-and-a-half-long awards show to celebrate the musicians that blew up the internet in 2013. It was... alright at best (unless you really like watching grown men rummaging through cakes), but despite over 50 million views on the show video itself, the live stream almost definitely didn't blow up the way the people in charge hoped it would. Ouch. YouTube was fond enough of the idea to take another stab at it, but thankfully this time the company's dropping that tired, ancient (not to mention expensive) awards show format.

YouTube has announced the shortlisted artists and videos for its first annual Music Awards, with the voting process starting today. Based on views and 'fan engagement', the usual internet suspects are all here, including Miley, Lady Gaga, Girls Generation and PSY (still). At the same time, the users and less mainstream artists that make YouTube what it is are also represented in categories like "Response of the Year" and "Innovation of the Year." Scrutinize the full list of nominees after the break, place your vote at the source link and expect to hear who the winners are at YouTube's live event in New York on November 3rd.

The alternate reality of Youtube -- where locally unknown but internet famous entertainers with millions of subscribers grab a spot next to widely recognizable mainstream artists -- meets the real world November 3rd with the first ever YouTube Music Awards. Lady Gaga, Eminem, and Arcade Fire are some of the names you'll recognize from TV and radio that will be there, along with YouTube channel favorites like CDZA and Lindsey Stirling. Spike Jonze is penciled in to serve as creative director and actor Jason Schwartzman will host, while VICE and Sunset Entertainment drop in as executive producers. Since YouTube is where many people go to check out music and find the newest artists (MTV is for scripted shows and reality TV of... varying quality), that it would launch its own live event seems almost inevitable. The show itself comes to you from NYC, but musical collaborations will be beamed in from locales around the globe including Seoul (so, that means Psy is going to show up), Moscow, London and Rio. Nominations for the awards open October 17th, and the site is calling on viewers to judge contributions from the past year to determine who will be the winner.
