A feature-length documentary about the legendary Johnny Cash is on the way to YouTube. The Gift: The Journey of Johnny Cash features interviews with the singer-songwriter's family and collaborators, along with newly unearthed archive footage and an original score from Pearl Jam's Mike McCready. It delves into the Man in Black's triumphs and spiritual endeavors along with his addiction problems and personal tragedies.
YouTube to scale back original shows as it focuses on free viewing
YouTube might not be quite so keen on original shows as it has in the past. Hollywood Reporter sources claim YouTube is planning to scale back its volume of original scripted programming starting in 2020 as part of a "serious budget reduction." It wouldn't drop originals entirely, but it wouldn't be spending hundreds of millions of dollars each year securing major productions. YouTube doesn't "feel like there's an opening" for its scripted work the way there is for rivals like Netflix and Amazon, a third-party producer said. Thankfully, there might be a good reason for toning down these efforts: many originals will be available for free.

Google Assistant users can preview YouTube’s 'Impulse' for free
With its paid Premium streaming service, YouTube has a steep climb to even compete against entrenched services like Netflix. First it has to get our attention, so for one of its most-anticipated series, Impulse, it came up with an interesting promotion. Google Assistant owners can access the first episode by saying "talk to Impulse." The AI device will give a brief sum-up of the show and ask for a password (it's "Henry" and a few variants). Once you do that, you'll get a link to the first unlisted episode on YouTube.
