Lab-in-a-box test can detect COVID-19 in 5 minutes
The FDA has scrambled to allow numerous COVID-19 tests in a bid to control the pandemic, but one of the latest may represent a big step forward in technology fighting the disease. Abbott has received emergency use authorization for a variant of its toaster-sized ID NOW lab-in-a-box that can provide positive results in as soon as five minutes, and all-clear results in 13 minutes. On top of this, it's one of the few tests of its kind that can be used outside of a hospital, such as at a clinic.
FDA OKs a blood sugar monitor that doesn't need fingerpricks
A fingerprick isn't just a fingerprick when you have to do it all the time to test your blood sugar levels. Thankfully, the Food and Drug Administration has approved the first continuous glucose monitoring system for adults that doesn't require you to draw blood several times a day. Abbott's FreeStyle Libre Flash Glucose Monitoring System works by inserting a tiny sensor wire below the surface of your skin. The wire needs 12 hours to start up, but once it's ready, you can simply pass a mobile reader over it to read your glucose levels. It even works for 10 days before you have to replace it.
Future US responds to Texas suit
Publisher Future US recently responded to the very strange charges filed against the company by Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott. AG Abbott claims that Future's website GamesRadar.com doesn't "adequately protect [children's] privacy and safety" and the site "unlawfully collect[s] personal information such as names, ages, and home addresses from children." If true, this would violate the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act. Future US responded, "This is the first contact we have had from the Texas attorney general on this matter and we are urgently reviewing the complaint"Shacknews properly notes that registration for their free RadarNation accounts is currently closed ("We're sorry, registration is currently unavailable.
