Acetrax movie service to close, lights go dim on June 21st
It's just as likely that you'll know Acetrax from the video services it's behind, as from its own branded offerings. Regardless of how you might use the service, its owner Sky is pulling the plug on June 21st. Impact to pay-per-view customers should mean nothing more than looking elsewhere, but those who bought titles outright will need to download them before the cutoff (there are a bunch of caveats though). The same goes for account credit -- either use it, or face the hassle of claiming it back after the fact. There's an FAQ on the website outlining the best course of action depending on your situation, so we'd suggest you head there first before working your way through your rental library.
Samsung Movies UK coming to an end, final screening on December 15th
After over a three year run,the Acetrax-powered Samsung Movies is about to fade to black. We received an email advising UK subscribers that the service will no longer be available as of December 15th and that its website would drift into oblivion. It's uncertain if this will affect customers in other European territories, but Acetrax references its plans to offer extended service for those looking to continue after Samsung Movies officially meets its maker. In addition to deep-sixing the service, the gloomy message advises that support has ended for the Galaxy Tab, Galaxy S, Wave, S8300 Tocco Ultra Edition, S7350 Classico, M7600 Beat DJ, i8910 HD and Jet. WD TV adds streaming options, tunes televisions near and far to your Slingbox
A raft of goodies has been tacked on to Western Digital's TV Live and TV Live Hub media players including new streams and Vudu movie downloading, but the addition of SlingPlayer might be the most intriguing. Depending on your region, you'll see new channels on the WD set-tops, including The AOL On Network, Red Bull TV, ABC iview (Australia), Acetrax Movies, Maxdome and BILD TV-App. Walmart's Vudu service will also be added, letting domestic and some foreign users buy or rent from a library of 70,000 downloadable films and TV shows. Finally, if you're a frequent traveler, you can pack your WD box and fire up the new SlingPlayer on your hotel TV to watch hometown broadcasts wherever you may be.
