  • Amazon will pull its movies from theaters to Prime faster

Ever since Amazon began developing its own movies it's had to strike a balance between theatrical success and streaming popularity. Films such as Late Night have been relative flops in cinemas but widely-viewed on Prime, while others --Manchester by the Sea, for example -- have performed well across the board. Now, Amazon says it's going to shorten the window between movies hitting the big screen and arriving on Prime, in a bid to mitigate some of the uncertainty associated with theatrical releases, and to get them in front of viewers at home, where the big numbers are.

Adam Sandler's 'Murder Mystery' breaks Netflix viewing records

While Netflix was famously reticent about releasing viewing statistics, over the last year or so the company has become more open about it. Its latest revelation confirms the theory that someone out there likes Adam Sandler movies, since his latest star-studded joint, Murder Mystery, has racked up the biggest opening weekend ever for a Netflix movie, with 30,869,863 unique accounts watching it in the first three days. As Netflix has previously established, it counts a view as someone watching more than 70 percent of a particular title. 13,374,914 of the accounts were in the US and Canada alone, with the remaining 17 million spread elsewhere worldwide. In 2017 Netflix explained viewers had already streamed over half a billion hours of Adam Sandler, clearing up any doubt about the four-picture deal it signed him to. Suddenly we know more about Netflix viewers' habits than ever before -- probably not coincidentally at the same time there's more streaming competition joining the party -- including that its heist flick Triple Frontier scored a 52 million account opening weekend, or that Bird Box racked up 45 million in one week last year. In the UK it even publishes Top Ten lists now.

Netflix packed May with new movies like Wine Country, the animated series Tuca and Bertie, a Ted Bundy biopic and more. Now, it's bringing just as much new content and star power to June. In just the first half of the month, Netflix will release season five of Black Mirror -- a three episode run, which you can watch trailers for now -- and the third and final season of Jessica Jones.

If there's one thing that America loves more than Netflix, it's movies where Adam Sandler sits around in loungewear cracking wise with Kevin James. It was back in October that the streaming company decided to give the public what it needed, teaming up with the actor's production company to knock out four original movies. Now, just a few months later, The Wrap has learned the details about the first to roll off the production line.

  • Sony's Crackle takes aim at Netflix with a 'Joe Dirt' sequel

Netflix may soon be adding four new Adam Sandler flicks to its coffers, but that doesn't mean it's got a monopoly on the ol' Waterboy's creative endeavors. Variety reports that Sandler's producing a sequel for the one and only Joe Dirt exclusively for Sony-owned streaming service (and Netflix competitor) Crackle. Seriously. SNL alum David Spade will once again don the mullet and those acid wash jeans to, well, no one knows quite yet - the first movie saw the eponymous Dirt abandoned by his parents at the Grand Canyon only to learn the true meaning of family 90 minutes later. It's probably safe to assume this new production's budget won't reach the $17 million bar the original did, but hey -- it's still a sign that Crackle won't let Netflix rule the original content roost without a fight. Kudos to them for trying to stick it to a streaming media titan, but really? That's the franchise they thought needed a second chance? Really?

  • Retro game-inspired short film 'Pixels' to become Adam Sandler feature

The brilliant short film Pixels kinda blew up on the web when it was released in 2010. Four years later, Sony is planning to breathe new life into the homage to old-school gaming by turning it into a feature-length Adam Sandler vehicle. The short featured classic game villains like Donkey Kong and Space Invaders wreaking havoc in New York City, eventually turning it and the entire globe into the titular elements of computerized graphics. The feature film will take the basic premise and add what passes for a plot -- aliens that resemble said video game characters see the virtual violence committed against them as an act of war. From there it falls to the stars of I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry to defeat the invading hordes. There's still plenty of time for this potential abomination to get shelved since filming doesn't even start 'til next month. There is one mystery left to solve, however -- with Chris Columbus at the helm, how exactly will Christmas figure into the plot?

  • Sandler movie Pixels pits aliens against arcade champions next summer

Pixels, the Adam Sandler action comedy that's taking 1980s gaming classics and giving them the big screen treatment, is coming to cinemas on May 15, 2015, Variety reports. Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage also features, while veteran director Chris Columbus will oversee filming, which is due to begin in June. To recap, the Pixels plot centers around aliens who discover video footage of classic arcade games. After seeing them, the aliens believe Earth is preparing to wage war - you might too if you were an extraterrestrial who stumbled upon Space Invaders. The aliens invade Earth, using the games they've seen as templates for their attack. Of course, it's up to some "old-school arcaders" to defeat the aliens, save the day, and try not to be portrayed too nerdily. If the plot and name sounds familiar, it's because you've probably seen it as Patrick Jean's excellent short film from a few years back; and the movie is based on Jean's video. It seems following the success of Wreck-It Ralph, 1980s gaming is in when it comes to films; Sony Pictures said Columbus and the studio are working with "many of the 1980s' most iconic video game brands" to bring together characters from arcade classics on the silver screen. • Where did "Blu-ray" come from? Adam Sandler knows

The name HD DVD, while not particularly original is at least pretty clear to anyone familiar with standard DVDs. Fans of Sony's Blu-ray technology certainly get the connection to its blue laser technology, but the average consumer might be a little thrown off. If you need more explanation of where the term "Blu-ray" originated, Adam Sandler -- star of Sony Pictures' first dual-layer 50GB Blu-ray release -- provided his own retelling of the events during a dinner honoring Sony CEO Howard Stringer recently. No matter how seriously you take his tale of a devastating cross-eyed blonde named Blu-ray who rocked Howard's world many years ago in Singapore, we're sure the company's shareholders hope making the name famous won't "destroy" the executive.

  • Shadow of the Colossus cameo in new Sandler, Cheadle flick

GameBump spotted this Shadow of the Colossus appearance in a trailer for the upcoming Adam Sandler drama Reign Over Me, which also stars Don Cheadle. So does Fumito Ueda's wonderful PlayStation 2 epic play a significant role in the plot? Probably not. Still, that a major Hollywood production would opt to use a game that is not easily recognizable to a mainstream audience is significant enough. Unfortunately, the cameo, as framed by the trailer, is pinned to the old stereotype that when guys get to playing video games they neglect more important obligations (okay, sometimes we do), but the usage of Shadow of the Colossus also ties into an overarching maturation of the games industry; one that is forcing mainstream perception to shifts its view and embrace the critical impact games have on many adult lives. Nice work, Mr. Binder. [Thanks, Aaron]

Some people pretend to donate PS3s and some people are the real deal, spreading holiday cheer to the less fortunate. In this case, uber-comedian Adam Sandler donated a PS3 to siblings who have both recently been diagnosed with cancer:"Stephanie Hudon has bone cancer that recently spread to her lungs. Kevin Hudon was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma in November and is undergoing chemotherapy."The generosity didn't stop with Sandler as the teens' high-school held a fund raiser where fellow student, Nathan Burditt, camped out for 34 hours to nab a PS3 for a raffle.Bravo to Sandler and Bravo to the students of Memorial High School. PS3fanboy's prayers and hopes are with Stephanie and Kevin.Kind of puts things into perspective, doesn't it?[Update: Originally, this post was intended as a sequel to the original PS3 posterboy story. The content has been changed to encourage a more positive discussion as the year turns.][Via PSU]
