We've never quite understood the point of hiring Danny McBride to be in a G-rated movie, since he can't do the sort of foul-mouthed improvisation that he does best. That hasn't deterred Rovio and Sony Pictures from asking him and other comedians for filling out the cast list for Angry Birds: The Movie. The flick will star SNL-alum Jason Sudeikis as Red, a bird with a "temper problem," Josh Gad as Chuck and the aforementioned McBride as Bomb. Other cast members include SNL-alum Bill Hader as the Pigs, SNL-alum Maya Rudolph as Matilda and, er, current SNL player Kate McKinnon. The film's secret weapon, of course, is to hire Game of Thrones and Destiny star Peter Dinklage as the Mighty Eagle. Although if the movie is anything like the game, we guess we'll have to pay a couple more bucks in order to see the Mighty Eagle get us past a particularly difficult scene.

A release for the upcoming Angry Birds flick has been narrowed to July 1, 2016, with Sony distributing the movie worldwide, Rovio announced on its website today. Rovio's intent on creating a feature film was made public late last year, when the studio tapped producers John Cohen and David Maisel from Despicable Me and Iron Man to lead the project. The Angry Birds movie is unique in that it's being completely done in-house – Rovio is funding and producing the film entirely on its own.

The Angry Birds movie is happening. Despicable Me producer John Cohen has signed on to produce, and Iron Man executive producer David Maisel is taking the same role in Rovio's feature film. The Angry Birds movie is set to hit theaters in summer 2016, and it's fully funded and produced by Rovio outside of the standard studio system."John's an exceptionally talented producer, and we're delighted to have him join the flock," says Mikael Hed, Rovio CEO. "With John's hands-on producer background and David's expertise in establishing and running his own successful studio, these two are the dream team for making a movie outside the studio system. Both professionals have the ideal skills and vision to achieve incredible things."Rovio held meetings with Hollywood advisers in 2010 and was rumored to have sought funding to the tune of $1.2 billion in 2011 to expand its entertainment offerings. As this film takes off, keep one thing in mind: Cohen is the guy who thought 2007's Alvin and the Chipmunks was a good idea.

  • Rumor: Angry Birds may be worth $1.2 billion in entertainment explosion deal

Angry Birds developer Rovio is out to prove money really can't buy happiness, with a deal to receive funding that would make the company worth $1.2 billion, Bloomberg rumors. Rovio wants to expand the explosive brand into other entertainment sectors, including making an Angry Birds movie and selling the game and its products in China, which may explain talks with an entertainment company, as revealed by Bloomberg's two anonymous sources. Michael Pachter pegs EA, Zynga and Walt Disney as likely candidates to do a deal with Rovio, as Disney could make Angry Birds a movie and theme park, and Zynga could turn it into Farmville. While one of those sounds immensely more appealing to us (Angry Bird Slingshot ride, anyone?), either are easily possible, even if more than $1 billion seems a bit much to pay for a phone app.
