  • Daily iPhone App: Anomaly Korea polishes the award-winning Anomaly series even more

Anomaly Korea is, right out of the gate, one of the most impressive titles I've ever seen on iOS. Developer 11 bit Studios' Anomaly: Warzone Earth won an Apple Design Award for the way it looked and played, and as a rep from the studio told me recently, they decided to up the ante, adding even better graphics, with lots more flares, particles and other really great-looking visual elements. The core gameplay here is the same -- you're in charge of a convoy of vehicles heading through an alien tower-infested warzone, and you guide those vehicles down a path of your choice, supplying them with almost constant support power-ups as you do so. And because that gameplay didn't change very much, 11 bit was able to really polish and refine it, adding in a few new power-ups, and making the old ones even better. This isn't really a sequel to the first title, but it is all new content, and the real draw here is that 11 bit was able to make a game that was already great even better. The one issue I really have with this game is that it's not quite as direct as I'd usually like -- you are basically supporting your units, rather than actually playing as them. But 11 bit has even taken that note to task, and made the choices you make while moving around the map even more important than before. This is a great game -- odds are that you've already purchased quite a few this week, given all of the big sales and releases, but it's very hard not to still recommend this one at the launch price of just $2.99.

  • Indie Royale Stuffing Bundle crams together Dream Machine, Puzzle Agent 2 and more

Before the holidays have you engorged to the point where the only game you can play is called nap, Indie Royale wanted to proposition you with a new tempting smorgasbord of indie games. The Indie Royale Stuffing Bundle groups together Dream Machine: Chapters 1-3, Puzzle Agent 2, Anomaly: Warzone Earth, Children of the Nile and Adventure Apes and the Mayan Mystery. Dream Machine uses cardboard and clay to tell the story of Victor Neff and his wife who just moved into an apartment building that just isn't quite right. (Dream Machine is a five-part series, so keep in mind you won't get the entire award-winning point-and-click adventure experience in this bundle.) Puzzle Agent 2 is the 2011 sequel to Telltale Games' and Graham Annable's original adventure/puzzle outing and Pilot Program winner. Anomaly: Warzone Earth you've probably heard of since it's on every platform ever invented, while Adventure Apes and the Mayan Mystery is a Metroidvania game with lots of exploration. Finally, Children of the Nile is a city-building sim set in ancient Egypt – the Enhanced Edition is a Steam key, while the Desura/DRM-free code included in the bundle is based on the 2004 original, Immortal Cities: Children of the Nile.

This week's PSN update is uncharacteristically early and adds a smattering of new content, including Double Dragon: Neon (free for PS Plus subscribers, along with Scott Pilgrim) and the PS3 port of 11 bit studios' Anomaly Warzone Earth. These new PSN jams are joined by full game downloads of Max Payne 3 and Battlefield 3 Premium Edition.PS Vita owners looking to relive some PSOne Classics can choose from 21 new games in the PS Vita store starting today. Standouts include One, Mass Destruction and the comically awful Perfect Weapon – hey, it was the first PSOne game I ever owned. It has sentimental value. The full content list for this week's PSN update can be found over on the PlayStation Blog.

Anomaly: Warzone Earth will be available on North America's PlayStation Network this Tuesday, September 11, developer 11 bit studios has told Joystiq. The game's European PlayStation Network launch on August 28 marked its fifth platform release, having originally launched for PC and OSX back in April of 2011.Since then, Anomaly: Warzone Earth has been ported to iOS, Android, XBLA and now finally PSN, which is basically the gaming equivalent of an EGOT. Except, you know, not. Anomaly Korea, a sequel to the mobile versions of the game, is currently under development and should be out around late October or early November.

The PSN version of Anomaly: Warzone Earth launched in Europe yesterday, sporting two exclusive local co-op campaigns and, uh, the ability to be played on a PlayStation, which was severely lacking from the Windows, XBLA, iOS and Android versions that have also come out over the last year or so.

Anomaly: Warzone Earth has seen success on XBLA, PC and mobile devices, with a PSN launch incoming, allowing 11 bit studios to explore other genres with rapid proficiency. The developer showed us three of its coming titles at Gamescom, each one emphasizing variety and high-quality design on mobile devices.Funky Smugglers has players pick illegal items off a line of fresh thugs as they pass through an airport X-ray machine, and is headed to iOS, Android and Mac in September. The touchscreen versions allow five-finger swipes, and the game is cross-platform, with multiplayer and an in-game currency focused on visual customization. 11 bit is still deciding on a price, but is considering a freemium model or selling Funky Smugglers for a small fee.Sleepwalker's Journey will be the following title for iOS, Android and Mac, planned for a launch in October. It's a puzzle platformer in a bright, dreamy art style, with players moving platforms to get a sleepwalker across the landscape. Sleepwalker's Journey channels Braid, allowing players to rewind time if they fail or want to try a particular move again, and with three worlds and 45 levels total, there appears to be plenty to do in dreamland. 11 bit hasn't yet decided on a price.Anomaly Korea is a sequel to the mobile version of Warzone Earth, hitting iOS and Android in late October or early November, 11 bit hopes. It features Captain Evans and Lieutenant Park running through 12 campaign levels, with a new Boost ability and a new enemy unit.Check out some screenshots and video of Anomaly Korea, Funky Smugglers and Sleepwalker's Journey below.

Mobile gaming dev 11 Bit Studios (probably most notable for putting together Anomaly: Warzone Earth for iOS, Android, and the PC) has announced three new titles coming out in the next few months for mobile platforms. First up, Anomaly Korea is another take on the popular reverse tower defense title, featuring new units, new powers, and new levels to battle through.Funky Smugglers is a colorful, cartoony game that puts the player in the role of a '70s airport security agent, trying to keep crazy characters from sneaking certain items past the checkpoint. Sleepwalker's Journey is the last release, a sleepy, artistic puzzle platforming game that has you guiding a "Moonboy" through a fantasy world.11 Bit promises more information on all of these games at Gamescom next week, so we'll look for that then.

GOG.com, purveyor of fine vintage software (and, recently, more modern fare), has added a trio of games to its DRM-free service, including Thief: Deadly Shadows.Developed by Ion Storm Inc., the third installment in the celebrated stealth series sees master thief Garrett embroiled in a terrible prophecy. The only means of escape lies in unrestrained pickpocketing, merciless guard-clubbing and at least one jaunt through a place so scary, you'll Alt-Tab out of the game and look for reprieve on Reddit.Oh, and two more: You may now possess Ubisoft's, Tom Clancy's, Clint Hocking's Splinter Cell; and Anomaly: Warzone Earth, the reverse tower defense game that was most recently ported to Xbox Live Arcade. All three games are available for $9.99 each.

In the year 2018, what initially appears to be a comet crashes into Baghdad with seismic force. Just like that, Earth has been invaded. Anomaly: Warzone Earth tells the story of the brave members of the fourteenth platoon, the military group that responds to the disaster first and (with any luck) the group that will still be around to fire the final shot. Anomaly: Warzone Earth is a tower defense game in reverse. As events unfold, aliens have set up encampments and Earth's soldiers are the new invaders. Towers and turrets dot the landscape. Extraterrestrial vessels hover over scorched soil and the remnants of apartments and office buildings. The loss of human lives is palpable. Now soldiers must take back each captured zone by bringing the fight to the aliens. %Gallery-141838%

Anomaly: Warzone Earth, the "reverse tower defense" game of disabling defenses around alien spacecraft (and the game with the most "three random nouns stuck together" title since Sniper: Ghost Warrior) is heading to XBLA on April 6, perfectly situated within the announced "spring" release window. It'll cost 800 Microsoft Points ($10), itself an anomaly in a sea of $15 games.Speaking of anomalies, check out the trailer above, released in honor of the XBLA release date announcement.

No smartphone is safe from cheap indie games (unless it's a Blackberry). Just as the Steam mobile app goes out of beta, allowing unfortunate impulse purchases from iOS or Android devices, the Humble Indie Bundle has announced its first Android release, available now.Under the same "pay whatever, support charity" pricing scheme as previous Humble Bundles, the Humble Bundle for Android offers Android versions of Anomaly: Warzone Earth, Osmos, and Edge, with a bonus copy of World of Goo available to anyone who exceeds the average payment. All of these games are cross-platform, so you get them on your Android phone and Windows, OSX, and Linux. That's a pretty appealing deal for the price of however much you end up paying.

The two games couldn't be more different, yet today they set aside those differences and unite on the Android Marketplace. 11 bit studios' tower offense title, Anomaly Warzone Earth, and Sega's latest downloadable addition to its tower of Sonic games, Sonic 4 Episode 1, are available on the Android Marketplace today. Both games will set you back $3.99, though if your particular device is running Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) you may want to hold off on Sonic 4 Episode 1 until Sega's ironed out some bugs. Sorry, one of those bugs is not the physics -- you'll need to wait for Sonic 4 Episode 2 for that.

That's right, you can download Anomaly: Warzone Earth on the Kindle Fire. If you've got an Android tablet sporting 2.3 or higher, it should also be compatible with your non-Kindle Fire thingamabob. All you need to do is install the Amazon App Store and cough up $3.99. More impressive than Anomaly: Warzone Earth's debut on a yet another platform is how it made its way over to Android in the first place -- via one guy. It took 11 bit studios' lead programmer Bartosz Brzostek just two weeks (and a lot of coffee) to port the iOS version over to Android.

    12.08.2011

Thursday on the App Store brings another round of new app releases, as well as some big updates. We've got news on some of those releases elsewhere, but here are a few of the app updates currently waiting for you in the App Store on your iOS device. Jetpack Joyride has gotten what Halfbrick calls "our greatest update ever" with a new mission system, a new forest area to play through, and lots of other add-ons and tweaks. Great game, only 99 cents, so go grab it if you haven't yet. Anomaly Warzone Earth is another great title that now boasts iCloud syncing for saved games, as well as some graphical and gameplay tweaks. Spelltower (above) is getting a (surprise!) universal update that brings this really terrific and well-designed word game to the iPhone's smaller screen. Minecraft for iOS hasn't updated yet, but Mojang has lots of plans for future releases. Zombie Gunship has gone free, as has The Adventure of Timmy. Pix'n Love Rush has an entirely new mode to play with, and the graphics look a little different at night apparently. Rebuild is a nicely polished strategy game for iOS that will push an update soon that includes support for the original iPad, as well as Game Center support. Attention, Alec Baldwin: Words with Friends for iPad has gotten an update with a few new metrics for showing how well your words are doing. And speaking of Zynga, that company's Poker app has been updated too, including some changes that make it much more independent of the Facebook game. There's lots of new content for some of your favorite apps this week. Not all of these are live just yet, but stay tuned, they'll be posted soon.

We hate to be bossy, but we have to insist you go buy Anomaly Warzone Earth HD. Right now. Go on. Hmm, you're still here. We honestly hoped that would work, but we suppose we can deign to sell you on the idea a little bit. So, for starters, Anomaly Warzone Earth is an excellent blend of futuristic tower defense and real-time strategy, but that's old news. The big story is that the formerly iPad-only game is now a Universal app. Better yet, it's on sale for $2! So, what are you waiting for? ... Oh, the name? Yeah, we're sorry about that. We've begged them to change it. But c'mon, you're gonna have to meet us halfway here.
