Down goes the Apple store. Whatever the reason is, it'll be a few short hours until we know what new goodies have been added to Cupertino's boutique. Whatever happens, we'll be right there, detailing all the action in our liveblog -- in the meantime, you can check what we're hoping to see in iOS 6 right here. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

  • Apple store goes down, iMac refresh on high alert

Details are spotty but Apple special forces have apparently swept into its data center, temporarily disrupting the company's ability to sell anything online. We're expecting official word of the operation from company CEO Steve Jobs, at about 08.30 Eastern Time. With any luck, a new iMac will emerge unscathed by the Nehalem menace, sporting a brand new Sandy Bridge microarchitecture -- or as we like to call it: freedom. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

  • White iPhone 4 rumored as Apple Store goes down globally (update: nope)

It was bound to happen sometime, and today is as good as any other post-holiday day to launch the mythical white iPhone 4. While normally we'd consider a Wednesday night shuttering of the global Apple store to be maintenance-related, a tweet identifying a pair of supposed white iPhone part numbers -- MC604X/A (16GB) and MC606X/A (32GB) -- has surfaced, attributed to an established last-minute Apple insider known only as "Mr. X" in various tech forums. Mind you, "spring " was the last official timeframe for a white iPhone release. But please, we beg you... don't say that it's early if it does appear when the Apple Store returns to business later today -- we don't want anyone to get hurt in the comments. Update: Apple.com has undergone a subtle redesign, with the navigation bar up top taking on a shinier new look, though the Store remains down. A little bit of web-based multitasking, eh Apple? Update 2: Store is back and we're not seeing anything new. You?

Could it be a Verizon iPhone? The white iPhone 4? Perhaps a surprise Core i3 ULV in the 13-inch MacBook Pro? We can't tell for sure, but our money's on none of the above, folks. We'll be sure to dig through for changes as soon as the house that Jobs built is up and running once more. Update: The store's back up, but contrary to popular belief nothing of import seems to have changed -- the white iPhone 4 option had already been removed and the Core i7-640M was already made available in the larger MacBook Pros a while back. We're hearing from an internal source that it may have just been scheduled maintenance. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Hey, the Apple Store is down. Readers: we know, and we hear you! We're curious too, but we should warn you that since Apple isn't keen on launching products in the middle of the night on a weekend, it's probably nothing. Still, we'll be here if the iPhone 5G pops into existence and ruins our marathon of The X-Files. Until then... maybe hold your tip email. Update: It's back and guess what? Nothing new to report. • Apple Store down globally: iPad pre-orders only or something more?

Ok, you know the routine: the Apple store goes down prompting blog posts to deflect the onslaught of tips. Commenters then ponder why Apple has to go offline to add updates before a flamewar breaks out with somebody accusing somebody else of being a Nazi. Ah the internet, somebody should give it a prize. In between all the nonsense, feel free to wonder whether or not we'll be seeing an overdue Mac Pro update to Gulftown in addition to the long awaited MacBook Pro update that should bring automatic NVIDIA Optimus graphics switching to Apple's top-o-the-line laptops. We already know that iPad pre-orders are a lock. Check back at around 830 New York time to find out. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Upgrades are $299. FCP 7 includes three new ProRes codecs, alpha transitions, new sharing options including support for iChat Theater, automatic transfer of P2 media and more. Motion 4 includes new 3D shadow and reflection options, and the ever-popular bad film filter. All the apps in Studio have been updated to new versions.Apple also announced version 1.5 of the Final Cut Server collaboration and asset management environment. The unlimited-license edition of FC Server is also $999 & upgrades are $299..Full feature list from Apple PR in the continuation of the post.[H/T The Loop]

  • Pingdom brings Apple Store downtime hysteria to your website

Every time the Apple Store has some downtime, magic seems to happen, especially if it happens to be a Tuesday. Not surprisingly, we get a flood of emails from excited readers a few minutes after the yellow sticky note goes up, letting us know that we better be on our toes when the store comes back up. Follow that with some obsessive site-checking and collectively, that's a lot of manual labor. It's about time we started automating the process. Pingdom, purveyors of website monitoring services, have produced a badge that puts the status of the Apple Store on your web page, blog, and maybe your dashboard with a web clipping. Pingdom does the work of pinging the Apple Store once per minute to determine its current state, and provides you with an image indicating up or down which is embedded in an iFrame. Simple, but effective. So, save the wear and tear on your mouse and grab the badge rather than hitting refresh all morning this Tuesday. Pingdom also has a downtime history going, and an analysis of Apple's "marketing by downtime." After all, it is quite a well-planned marketing scheme, if not a growing national pastime for Apple fans.

The North American Apple stores are down. Last week it was Aperture 2 and Apple TV software updates. This week? Post your guesses/odds in the comments. Or tell us to get lives and stop checking the store every five minutes (point taken).Let's think, is there any hardware refresh that is greatly anticipated? Nah... but now it's back up, and see Brett's post for the details.

Or is Dawn in trouble? I forget. Anyway, as noted by our loyal readers, the Apple Store site is down this morning (US only at the moment -- the UK store appears to still be up), sporting the Post-it note that strikes glee into the hearts of gear groupies far and wide. Is it new iMacs? A bagful of iPhone accessories? We will know shortly.Update: Doesn't appear that there were any changes to the product offerings... darn these maintenance outages that are actually for performing maintenance. Thanks everyone who sent this in.
