  • Report reveals just 34% of apps released in 2012 were paid

The App Store is a very different place than it was four years ago, and nothing makes that point better than Appsfire's 2012 roundup infographic. Arguably the most telling statistic regarding the current state of apps is that just 34 percent of apps released in 2012 landed in the Paid category, with the other 66 percent being free to download. But what does this say about the App Store? Has it suddenly become a cheapskate's paradise? Not really. As opposed to 2008, when 74 percent of apps were paid from the start, app publishers are embracing the "freemium" model more and more, relying on in-app purchases and upgrades to bring in the cash instead of charging upfront. The infographic also reveals that despite being released just days ago, Google Maps managed to take the title of highest-reviewed non-game app. On the gaming side of things, Angry Birds Space snagged the top spot.

  • iOS App Store to reach 1 million submitted apps milestone

An unofficial count from AppsFire, an app discovery and promotion platform, suggests the iOS App Store is about to accept its 1 millionth app submission, according to a report in The Next Web. The company broke down the app submissions since 2008 and found that 49 percent (493,289) were paid apps and almost 16 percent (158,848) were games. These figures include only the iOS App Store. Apple announced during its September iPhone 5 event that the App Store has 700,000 live apps. This figure is much lower than the 1 million submissions claimed by AppsFire, but many of these missing apps could be apps that were submitted to the App Store, but not approved by Apple. Another chunk could be apps that were pulled from the App Store by the developer or Apple.

A survey of the 1,000 iOS devices that synchronize with Appsfire's mobile app discovery and sharing platform reveal some interesting statistics about app usage by its iOS owners. Summarized in an infographic, the compiled statistics show that most of its iOS users prefer native apps to web apps. The average user spends 84 minutes a day using on-device applications and a mere ten minutes on the web using web-based applications. Each iOS owner has, on average, 108 applications installed on their device. Of these applications, 20 are shipped with the operating system and 88 are installed from the App Store. Breaking it down even further, Appsfire suggests that 58% of installed applications are free, 23% are paid and 19% are the default apps on the handset. Of these apps, the average Appsfire user spends 10% of their time on telephony and 47% of their time using other apps like Angry Birds, Instagram and more. While the results are compelling, they represent a subset of users who are focused on finding and using applications. Take a look at the infographic after the break and let us know in the comments if you fit into this profile.

The App Star awards are hosted by Appsfire, highlighting up-and-coming apps deserving of more attention. In the second round of awards the winners are: IsoCards, Mixr and LiveRider. We'll have more on these apps in the coming weeks, but here's a rundown: IsoCards: $1.99 for iPad and iPhone. One of my first iPad downloads, IsoCards added the ability to hold your cards in your iPhone (or iPod touch) and throw them onto the table on the iPad. This is just a simple table and cards, but perhaps one of the best implementations of real-world game pieces on the iPad out there. If you want to play cards but are missing a deck, check out IsoCards. Mixr: a DJ app for iPad, it isn't yet available. LiveRider: a free app designed to work with the LiveRider hardware. LiveRider attaches to a bicycle and allows you to record your cadence, speed and session time. It will play music in the background, chart progress and more.
