  • Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood review: A trusty blade gets even sharper

Whether it's the non-numerical title, the proximity to the last entry in the series or the nearly identical box art, there seems to be a lot of confusion about whether Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood should be called a fully-fledged sequel to last year's bilingual stealth-action masterpiece. Is it a standalone installment in the franchise, or a collection of new gameplay ideas that weren't realized in time to make it into Assassin's Creed 2? After completing the game's single-player campaign and digging into its multiplayer offerings, I can confidently say that I still have no idea. It could accurately be categorized as either, or even both, but ultimately that distinction's not all that important. Any way you slice it, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood is an absolutely exceptional game. %Gallery-105321%

  • Black Friday: Kmart dishes cross-platform discounts

We're impressed by some of the already announced Black Friday deals, but not a single one compares to the bounty of enormous discounts offered by Kmart (which is totally different from S-Mart). Brand new games like Fable 3 and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood are going for $40, while game of the year contender Mass Effect 2 can be found for just $10. The deals apply to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii (NBA Jam for $30, anyone?), and PSP. And yes, before you go quickly clicking through the list of games (highlights after the break!) to see all the discounts, be aware that Madagascar Kartz (still Madagaskartz in our hearts) is on sale for $10. We know what you're getting in your stockings this year! [Image credit: Thomas Hawk]

Forget about assigning assassins to murder fools, and crazy ship battles, and launching firey volleys from your Da Vinci-designed hang glider -- it's all about keeping the people free, baby! Rather, that's what Ezio would have us believe in the launch trailer for Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood.

  • Assassin's Creed Ascendance is an animated short, coming Nov. 16

After teasing the project yesterday, Ubisoft has fully unveiled the particulars of UbiWorkshop's next project, Assassin's Creed Ascendance. The short animated film will serve as a primer into the shady, conspiratorial dealings of 16th century Rome, and will be released on XBLM and PSN next Tuesday, November 16 -- the launch day of Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. Check out the full trailer for the short after the jump. Ubisoft promises the film "bridges the narrative gap" between the series' last installment and its fraternal sequel -- however, with a suggested MSRP of $1.99, we're not sure how many people are going to spring to purchase it. Especially not since we can bridge that gap for you, right now, for free: Some people with names you can't pronounce stabbed each other. You're welcome.

Unboxing videos are usually pretty tame affairs -- but that's because most games' special editions don't include bonuses engineered to scare the crap out of whomever might open them. That's the (unfortunate) case in the unboxing video for Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood posted below.

  • Ubisoft brings online middleware dev Quazal into its brotherhood

On a bit of a spending spree this week, Ubisoft today added Montreal-based Quazal Technologies to the family. Creator of multiplayer middleware and services, Quazal has worked with Ubisoft for a number of years, and its products power components in a range of the publisher's titles, including this month's Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, the last three Splinter Cell games and Far Cry 2. "We're happy to be able to continue to express our creative vision via the projects we'll be working on with Ubisoft," Quazal co-founder Martin Lavoie said in a press announcement. Ubisoft has plenty to be happy about, too. While no representative stood up and said as much, executives were no doubt preparing to bathe in a fresh pool of licensing loot. Quazel tech is all up in plenty of other companies' games, after all.

  • Assassin's Creed Brotherhood gets free PS3-exclusive launch DLC

    by

    11.02.2010

Sony has gone to great lengths to convince gamers that the PS3 version of Assassin's Creed Brotherhood is the one to get. First came the E3 reveal during Sony's press conference. Then, the PlayStation Network multiplayer beta. Now, one more piece of the co-opted marketing puzzle has been revealed: new DLC that will be free and exclusive to the PS3 version of the game. Entitled "Copernicus Conspiracy," this single-player add-on will have Ezio performing a variety of courier, protection and assassination missions in a story that has Nicolaus Copernicus as a target for his dangerous heliocentric belief -- that the world revolves around the sun, and not the other way around. Like Mafia 2 and Batman Arkham Asylum before it, the add-on will be available at launch as a separate download. Considering Blu-ray's copious storage capacity, we're not entirely sure why it can't be included on the disc, but we doubt PS3 owners will complain about getting a meaty extra for free.

Ubisoft has announced that Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood is "gold" -- i.e., it's on the way to the factory where it gets turned into thousands of silver discs and shipped to stores, where it will go on sale November 16. To accompany the news, a new montage trailer is out. Hit the break to view it.

  • Assassin's Creed: The Fall comic book detailed in dev diary

    by

    10.23.2010

Outside of the comic's early 20th century Russia setting and the main character's name, little information has been released on the forthcoming Assassin's Creed comic, Assassin's Creed: The Fall; however, a developer diary released today details the comic's narrative, setting, main character, and how he fits into the franchise's overall timeline. Nikolai Orelov will be leaping from Russian rooftops and landing his (likely freezing cold) twin blades into the necks of important men like Tsar Alexander III. Perhaps most interesting about the dev diary is the comic team's tease at the end that their story could find its way into a future Assassin's Creed title. Though we stand by our desire for a post-Civil War, Reconstruction Era Assassin's Creed game, one set in the Russian revolution doesn't sound too shabby either.

If there's one thing this Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood trailer proves, it's the mercenary is good at killing. Whether through a discrete stab to the gut or a long-distance headshot with his wrist-mounted pistol, nobody can question his ability to generate death -- that and his sweet Renaissance-period mullet, of course.

  • Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood murders other Ubisoft games ... in pre-orders

Assassins aren't the type to stand right out in the open and shout, "Hey, look at me! Assassin here!" But that's exactly what Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood seems to be doing, as Ubisoft reports the game is receiving a lot of attention -- it's secured more pre-orders than any other title in the company's history. Of course, that's not exactly surprising, given that the last game in the series did kind of well. The publisher isn't divulging exact pre-order numbers, but adds that Brotherhood is "one of the biggest marketing investments in Ubisoft's history." (No word on the total marketing budget, either.) What we're most intrigued to know, though, is how exactly Ubisoft has managed to drum up such numbers when pre-order bonuses include one of the most revolting things known to the human species: clowns.

  • Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood single player preview: Welcome back, friend

    10.19.2010

We all have those friends that we see maybe once a year. We catch up, have a great time and depart, wondering why we meet so infrequently. During my first few hours with the single-player component of Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, I couldn't help but feel like that. Since 2007, spending time with Assassin's Creed has been a mixture of expectancy and reassurance. It's a dependable companion. And jumping into Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, that familiar feeling washed over me. This was primarily the same experience I've been enjoying the last few years. The game picks up right where Assassin's Creed 2 left us, showing the consequences of Ezio's actions during the finale. As it turns out, not killing that one prominent figure was a bad move -- hindsight being 20/2 and all that. %Gallery-105321%

  • Alan Wake, Epic Mickey among award-nominated video game scores

    10.17.2010

Set to be announced in advance of the Hollywood Music In Media Conference running November 18-20, 2010 in -- where else -- Hollywood, CA, the 2010 Hollywood Music In Media Awards nominees include nine video game scores under the category of Visual Media. The bombastic orchestral sounds of God of War 3 and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood are joined by the more moody fare of Alan Wake and -- a bit out of left field -- the score to Disney Epic Mickey. The winning score will be revealed on November 11, 2010, and you can find the complete list of nominees after the break. Cue dramatic end-of-post theme.

  • Assassin's Creed Brotherhood trophies spoil mission locations

It appears the trophy (and presumably Achievement) list for Assassin's Creed Brotherhood has made its way online. Frustratingly for Platinum hunters, it appears Brotherhood will require you to collect all the flags and all the feathers in the game in order to unlock the elusive trophy. Drat! In addition, there are new multiplayer trophies for the new online portion of the game. If you're concerned about spoilers, now would be the time to look away. Scanning the trophy list, we can garner three locations for missions: Rome, Spain and the present day. "Dust to Dust" requires you to collect an artifact in the present day, which may suggest that Desmond's abilities will be put to test in the sequel. There are also "VR Missions," which we can only hope will be inspired by Metal Gear Solid's wackier levels. For the rest of the achievements, visit PS3Trophies.org. [Image credit: IGN]

This Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood trailer depicts a happy reunion between Leonardo and Ezio, and then walks us through a mission ... featuring Ezio's more aggressive homicide techniques. We're pretty sure he's a robot fueled by human blood. Yep, totally a murder machine.
