Netflix dominates Grammy comedy nominations
Netflix has long been establishing itself as the go-to place for stand-up comedy specials. In fact, it might lay claim to having the best ones around after dominating the Best Comedy Album category in this year's Grammy nominations.
Netflix schedules loads of new shows, says why 'Lilyhammer' died
You won't have to wonder about when Netflix will start streaming much of its exclusive and original programming -- the company has provided scheduling for seemingly all of it in one shot. To begin with, it's renewing the weird-yet-familiar cartoon BoJack Horseman for a third, 12-episode season that will arrive in 2016. Can't wait that long? Longmire, the rescued A&E crime series, will make its Netflix debut on September 10th of this year, while a documentary about Keith Richards, Under the Influence, is due on September 18th. There are a slew of comedy specials arriving between August 14th (Demetri Martin) and December 18th (Mike Epps). Aziz Ansari's comedy series Master of None will show up on November 6th, and Chelsea Handler is hosting a four-movie documentary series that's "coming soon."
Aziz Ansari is getting his own Netflix comedy series
Netflix must have liked the response to Aziz Ansari's latest stand-up special, as it's about to give the comedian a lot more screen time. Deadline understands that the streaming service has ordered a 10-episode series co-created by Ansari and Parks and Recreation executive producer Andy Yang. It's not clear what the plot of the show will be (there's hints of a semi-autobiographic theme), but it'll be co-produced by some of Ansari's Parks and Recreation pals and include guests like Homeland's Claire Danes. One thing's for sure: between this and revivals like Fuller House and Wet Hot American Summer, Netflix is betting heavily on funny fare to keep you as a subscriber. What's on your HDTV: 'CSI: Cyber', 'Kimmy Schmidt' and 'American Crime'
Need a way to come back from your House of Cards weekend binge? This week we can present to you James Van der Beek and Shad Moss (fka Lil' Bow Wow) as part of the latest CSI spinoff, CSI: Cyber. Yup, that's a thing that is happening. Of course, if its competition is Scorpion and that super special episode of Law & Order: SVU, maybe the bar isn't too high to clear. Netflix is coming back strong this week too, debuting the first season of the Tina Fey-produced Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Aziz Ansari: Live at Madison Square Garden, and Ed Norton's documentary My Own Man -- plus season five of Archer. American Crime premieres Thursday night, while NBC brings boxing back to network TV with Broner vs. Molina. Aziz Ansari's new Netflix stand-up special debuts March 6th
If you're a big fan of comedy specials that are unique Netflix, the latest from the man behind Parks and Recreation's Tom Haverford is on the way. On March 6th, Aziz Ansari: Live at Madison Square Garden will premiere at 12:01 AM PT. The title is another Netflix original from Ansari, whose first, Buried Alive, debuted back in 2013. Other stand-up specials from the comedian are available through the internet service too, including Intimate Moments for a Sensual Evening and Dangerously Delicious. For those who fancy an extra dose of Ron Swanson, fellow cast member Nick Offerman has a Netflix original stand-up session of his own, offering his "10 Tips for a Prosperous Life" in American Ham. If you saw Star Trek or The Dark Knight on IMAX Digital, did you get your money's worth?
Since most of you are apparently waiting to see Star Trek at home anyway, this might not affect you but recently there's been a ruckus over what constitutes "real" IMAX. Judging from the map above, the company has been very successful spreading its IMAX Digital gospel to movie theaters across the country, but when patrons drop an extra $5 or so and don't see the gigantic field of vision-filling screen they're used to, is that really the IMAX experience? Whether you agree with IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond that the quality of digital projection, improved sound and slightly shifted viewing angle is enough to create the "wow factor" or Aziz Ansari's accusation of Liemax for the converted theaters, it's not right that it usually isn't clearly indicated which kind of setup your local theater has until you're actually inside.
