Intel, Motorola, Samsung and more join forces to support WiMAX 2
You probably have yet to experience its original incarnation, but with mere months left before the IEEE finally decides on the standard for the improved 802.16m version of WiMAX, a group of companies has finally stepped forward to support the new protocol, and solidify that nice, marketable "WiMAX 2" name while they're at it. Dubbed the WiMAX 2 Collaboration Initiative (or WCI for short), Alvarion, Beceem, GCT Semiconductor, Intel, Motorola, Samsung, Sequans, XRONet, ZTE and ITRI intend to, well, collaborate to make sure the new protocol can compete with LTE, while our old friends Sprint and Clearwire -- who are keeping their options open in the 4G wars -- simply cheer them on. Novatel prepping WiMAX-based MiFi, signs up for Qualcomm's Wearable Mobile Device modules
We haven't been shy about expressing our undying love for the MiFi, and now Novatel is playing catchup with the Sierra Wireless-built Sprint Overdrive and bringing WiMAX into the fold. Novatel has completed and tested a WiMAX MiFi prototype, achieving 18Mbps throughput in testing. The unit relies on a Beceem WiMAX chip and has 30Mbps down / 10Mbps up theoretical speeds. No word on when the 4G MiFi might actually hit the market, but Novatel can't be content for long to let Sierra eat that ever-widening WiMAX lunch all by itself. Meanwhile, Novatel has also picked up Qualcomm's Wearable Mobile Device modules for an as-yet undefined purpose. The units integrate a radio (CDMA 1x or EV-DO), Bluetooth, GPS, an accelerometer, and USB 2.0 plug. We don't know what sort of shenanigans Novatel will get up to with such integration at its disposal, but we're sure we'd love to find out.
Beceem's BCS500 4G modem splices WiMAX and LTE into one chip, sampling later this year
When we were told market research pointed to WiMAX and LTE standards for 4G connectivity coexisting, we didn't expect they'd do it quite so closely. Beceem, the maker of the WiMAX chips inside "every device in Clearwire's network," is working on a 4G modem that can handle both WiMAX and LTE, with the added extra of being able to move seamlessly between the two networks in order to find the best signal possible. The mashup of the two standards makes sense in light of all the equivocation from Clearwire and Sprint on the subject of which one they'd prefer, and would be a more than welcome simplification of our collective 4G future. Anyhow, the latest development is that Beceem and Motorola are working to pair the BCS500 to the latter's WiMAX 4G infrastructure, with the first dual-mode chips set to start sampling "later this year" and hit mass production in early 2011.
