The Apple Watch might include sleep tracking sooner than you think. Sources talking to 9to5Mac claim to have significant details as to how the health feature will work, with word that it might be announced "as early as next week" at the September 10th event. Some details aren't surprising, but they suggest this isn't just a throwaway addition.

Apple hasn't ditched, killed or forgotten Beddit. The tech giant has finally released the first Beddit sleep monitoring device since it purchased the company in early 2017, and it's now available for purchase from its website. Just like the company's previous devices, the new one is a thin sensor strip you need to place under the sheets. It then automatically tracks the sleep time, heart rate, breathing and snoring for up to two people -- it also takes note of the bedroom's temperature and humidity, so you'll know your ideal conditions to get a good night's sleep.

Those rumors of Apple Watch sleep tracking just got more tangible. Apple has acquired Beddit, a company whose business revolves around a sleep monitoring device as well as companion iOS and Watch apps. The fate of Beddit's products isn't clear (we've reached out to both Apple and Beddit), but they're surviving for now -- the only difference is that you're now subject to Apple's privacy policy instead of Beddit's own. Neither side has discussed future plans, but the implications are clear.

  • Misfit intros the Smart Bed System: the Internet of snooze

Are you ready to make your bed a smart bed? That's the question that will be answered by Misfit's latest "wearable", the Misfit Beddit Smart Bed System. Misfit is integrating its app -- which usually works just with the Shine fitness and sleep tracker -- with the Beddit Sleep Monitor. Although the Misfit Shine already tracks sleep quality by determining just how much you move during the night, Beddit measures many more physiological signals -- heart rate, respiration, movement, sound, and whether or not you are snoring. The Beddit monitor is paper-thin and is installed under the sheets on any mattress. The various readings are automatically and wirelessly transferred to your iPhone for analysis. Sleep is a huge part of the overall health story, since it's estimated that 70 million people in the US alone have sleep problems that can be associated with diabetes, obesity, depression, heart attack and stroke. The Beddit Sleep Monitor can be purchased starting today from the Misfit online store for only US$149.99.

Misfit tackled activity tracking with its Shine offering that looks more like a fashion accessory than a sensor. Now, the data gathering outfit is looking to wrangle sleep cycles with the Beddit sleep monitor. Claiming to be the "world's thinnest sleep sensor," the unit resides on your mattress as opposed to being tucked in between the sheets. From there, the gadget keeps an eye on heart rate, movement, snoring and ambient sound in order to gauge the quality of your slumber. Collected info is then beamed to your smartphone of choice for analysis within the Misfit app. If you're looking to quantify those Zs you catch, Beddit is available now for $150 -- half the price of Withings' Aura bedside system, but without the added sound and light show.
