Were you too busy playing Red Dead or Spider-Man over the holidays to give other games a look? Activision would like to talk. It's running a free, week-long trial of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4's tentpole Blackout mode between January 17th and January 24th on PC, PS4 and Xbox One. If you've wondered whether or not BO4's battle royale was good enough to tear you away from Fortnite or PUBG, you'll have plenty of time to get a feel for it.

Activision is trying something a little different with Call of Duty: Black Ops 4: It's selling a $30 version that drops the Zombies mode, and only includes standard multiplayer and the popular battle royale mode, Blackout. Bad luck if you're a console player, though -- the Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Battle Edition is PC-only for the time being.

The Game Awards nominees for 2018 are here, and this year it's very, very obvious who's out front. The short list (disclaimer: we're a judge in the competition) is dominated by God of War and Red Dead Redemption 2, both of which have a whopping eight nominations apiece -- it will surprising if they don't take home at least one award when all is said and done. They will have fierce competition, mind you. Marvel's Spider-Man has seven nominations, while Assassin's Creed Odyssey, the indie platformer Celeste and Fortnite (thanks to its ongoing updates and growing esports status) are in the running with four noms each.

How do you know day one game patches are getting out of hand? When stores are selling games early to accommodate those massive downloads. UK retail chain GAME is letting people buy Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 as early as six hours ahead of time to make sure they've had time to download the necessary 50GB launch day patch for the official midnight debut on October 12th. This shouldn't be an issue if you buy a digital copy (you can preload the latest version well before then) but disc buyers may spend a lot of time staring at progress bars on October 11th.

You don't have too long to wait to see how Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 fares as a multiplayer-only game. Activision and Treyarch have outlined the schedule for beta tests, and it's clear that some gamers will have better access than others. The first tests kick off August 3rd at 1PM Eastern, when PS4 pre-orders will have exclusive access until this initial run ends on August 6th at the same time. Xbox One and PC customers will have to wait until August 10th at 1PM Eastern to have their turn, although you won't need a pre-order if you're patient -- an open PC beta starts one day later. This second round of testing ends August 13th at 1PM Eastern.

Call of Duty is no stranger to the PC. Previous versions of the game have been available on the platform before this year's Black Ops 4, but Treyarch is putting way more energy behind the PC edition than it has in the past. That means a much larger team is working on this version of the game. There's much more attention to detail, customization and other features specifically for the PC faithful.

'Call of Duty: Black Ops 4' tweaks a familiar multiplayer formula

Call of Duty: WWII was a breath of fresh air after the weirdness what was Infinite Warfare. The return to historical battles was a welcome change after a (thankfully) brief trip to space. For 2018, the series is back in the hands of Treyarch, which means a new installment of Black Ops. The studio, along with publisher Activision, already took the wraps off the game a few weeks ago. Perhaps most importantly, the duo revealed that the single-player campaign would be replaced by a PUBG-esque battle royale mode. Of course, the popular CoD multiplayer isn't going anywhere, and that's what Activision is showing off at E3 this week.

The fourth installment of Call of Duty's Black Ops franchise has abandoned single-player in favor of a multiplayer-only focus...including a battle royale mode. Yes, the series is cashing in on the last-player-standing mode made popular by Fortnite and PUBG, but it's also got more Zombies experiences and traditional multiplayer content. And like Destiny 2 before it, Activision's latest game will run online play through Blizzard's Battle.net platform. The game is slated for release on October 12th.

If you're a fan of military-style first person shooters sometimes set in the future that have zombie DLC modes, you're in luck. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is headed to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on Friday, October 12th. Developer Treyarch announced the date in a short post on the Activision blog while also teasing a "community reveal event" you can watch on May 17th.
