  • Kinect now offers a stealth mode, courtesy of optical camouflage hack (video)

You've seen so many Kinect hacks by now that you probably think you know them all -- but wait, have you seen one that makes you look like Predator when he's busy predatorizing the populace? Or one that lets you reenact your favorite Metal Gear Solid scenes with Snake's camo turned on? Yup, a Japanese coder by the name of Takayuki Fukatsu has exploited the versatile openFrameworks to give Kinect a mode where it tracks your movement and position, but turns the dull details of your visage into an almost perfectly transparent outline. Of course, you're not actually transparent, it looks to be just the system skinning an image of the background onto the contours of your body in real time, but man, it sure is cool to look at. You can do so for yourself with the video after the break.

  • Iomega kicks out eGo Camo Drive: completely invisible to animals, data thieves

Not sure if we missed the memo, but apparently May 7th is the unofficial day of camouflaged technology. Shortly after Mobiado revealed a rugged Camo handset for the well-to-do hunters of the world, along comes Iomega with a jungle-ready portable HDD. The $149.95 eGo Camo Drive is entirely USB powered and packs a respectable 250GB of internal storage space, a black Iomega Power Grip band, a woodland camouflage pattern and DropGuard technology to prevent disastrous consequences should you drop your drive from less than 60 inches. We always knew those gamesmen never sat in a tree stand all day without a little entertainment to keep 'em sane.

  • Mobiado intros rugged Camo handset for wealthy, outdoorsy individuals

Never one to miss an opportunity to trot out yet another luxury handset, Mobiado has now taken the wraps off its new Camo candybar phone, which apparently adds some ruggedness to Mobiado's usual excess. That comes in the form of anodized aluminum shell and stainless steel buttons (not to mention some added thickness), plus a hand-painted camouflage design that at least makes it seem rugged. Otherwise, the phone is a pretty standard tri-band GSM number, with it boasting a 1.3-megapixel camera, a 208 x 208 pixel display of unspecified size, an MMC card slot, and built-in Bluetooth, to name a few features. No word on a price or release date just yet, but it's limited to a mere 200 units, so you can probably draw your own conclusions.

Nyko knows that playing the DS these days is a matter of survival. If you're hanging out in the jungle, as happens on occasion, then this accessory kit may save your DS's life. Are you willing to take your chances?Furthermore, if you're charging your DS in the car, and there's a jungle inside your car, the included charger may be the difference between a stealthy escape and capture. By enemies, inside the jungle, inside your car.All joking (briefly) aside, the Ultimate Kit Lite somehow looks pretty stylish in camo, and it holds 8 games. It might be a good choice for people looking for a new case and a car charger!

Just yesterday, we were reminded to check on one of the best and brightest of all the DS modders, and we weren't disappointed. The latest case mod from Kotomi prepares a DS Phat for the rigors of urban combat, because sometimes you need to keep your gaming on the DL. We'd turn the sound down, though. Nothing gives away your position like the musical stylings of Jamiroquai.

The Japanese release of Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops was met with quite some fanfare... and new hardware. The camo PSP, included in the MGS bundle, has infiltrated Japan and the blogger of PSP GadgetZ has captured one for himself. He's taken some beautiful, almost pornographic, pictures of the unit from all sorts of naughty angles. Interested importers can check out Play-Asia for this unique, but pricey, system.

  • New "imaging machines" distinguish between grass and camouflage

While we've got robots that can sniff out faux wine, and cyclops cameras that distinguish between humans and blow-up dolls (saywha?), Dr. Andy Harvey's latest invention could actually prove useful in battle and on the operating table. Although he hasn't tied the latest rounds of DIY artillery to this technology, the camcorder-styled machine can reportedly "distinguish the world's best camouflage from real foliage," not to mention its ability to "spot buried landmines" and "hidden enemies." Developed in Edinburgh, the imaging machine could be toted by soldiers to tip them off to unusual patterns in the grass (like carefully painted iRobots) before they come too close, as it can supposedly "identify 30 times more colors than the human eye." Interestingly, it is possible that the technology could eventually be used to "detect forms of cancer that are currently hard to pick up." While £800,000 ($1.56 million) have already been invested by the Department for Trade and Industry and QinetiQ, we don't imagine this project slowing down anytime soon, and it looks to be just one more reason we ought to simply let robots do all the fighting, anyway.

  • Sony Ericsson rolls pink camo Z530i

Huh? There's a phone in this picture? We kid, we kid -- pink camouflage is about as effective as a styrofoam paperweight, but then again, we don't think that's really the idea here (of course, with the forgettable VGA cam, this is a phone we wouldn't mind seeing disappear). Sony Ericsson has hooked up with Boost Mobile's Australian division to offer the Z530i in the user's choice of pink or black camo with matching Skullcandy headphones for that music collection you've got stored on the handset's Memory Stick Micro M2 slot. Look for it Down Under on Boost for $179 -- but seeing how it's a GSM piece, there's no chance of seeing this one migrate to Boost customers here in the States.[Via textually.org]

  • Sony and Konami releasing MGS-edition PSP

Sony's just going hog-wild with these fancy new PSP editions. This time we have the "camo" version that was spotted at the TGS, complete with Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops, a "Skin of a Warrior" faux snake-skin case, three pins and a nifty certificate. The handheld should be hitting Japan on December 22nd, and Play-Asia is already offering pre-orders for a fairly hefty $449 USD -- but we suppose they've gotta make a living somehow. There's also a cheapo option that skimps on the snake-skin and certificate, but reduces the price a whole hundie. No indication yet of when the madness might stop.[Thanks, Sengo]

It looks like the Metal Gear Solid Portable bundle that's coming out in Japan soon just got a classy upgrade. the standard black PSP that was originally included is now replaced by the camo-inspired PSP that was discovered at Tokyo Game Show a month ago. This limited-edition bundle is only 27,800 yen (about $235), which makes it quite a deal for any truly hardcore MGS fan.Of course, if you don't want to go all-out with a new system purchase, you can still get a free case for pre-ordering the game in the US.[Via PSP-Vault]

  • PSP sales boost attempt #347: stealth attack

    by

Sony has made numerous attempts on Nintendo's portable handheld crown with their PSP, but nothing really seems to stick, since DS sales numbers are just as astronomical as ever. Now Sony has taken to camouflaging their PSPs in an attempt to catch consumers unawares, thereby tricking them into purchasing the portable console. (Or perhaps they're trying to break into the notoriously tough hunting, camping, and peeping tom demographics). That's the theory anyways, because we're not really sure why somebody would pick one of these camo units up otherwise. Especially with Sony busting out a whole bunch of fruity PSPs and a silver edition alongside the camo version -- and of course there's always that incredibly pink version to consider. As far as price and availability, we're not quite sure Sony even plans to bring these things to market, but if they do we're banking on a Japan exclusive for a while before they come to the States, so hopefully we'll have ample warning. Be sure to peep the fruity and silver editions after the break.[Via PSP Fanboy]

It looks like Sony may consider bringing out some flashier PSP designs. While these aren't "official" yet, Sony rarely shows system colors that never materialize. This camo PSP looks especially hot, and will be a must-have for a true SOCOM fan. Hopefully, it won't fall under Sony's "Signature" line of systems, or you'll most likely be unable to afford it. Other pictures from Dengenki showcase more traditional blue, yellow and red systems, which can be seen after the cut. Me? I like the yellow one the best. Will Sony ever officially announce these system colors? And if they do, will they ever bring them to the States? (Hey, we still don't have the white PSP.)See also:A closer look at the pink PSPGetting intimate with Kacho-Fugetsu[Via PSP-Vault][Update 1: Now features Silver PSP]
