The PlayStation 2 version of Capcom vs. SNK 2: Mark of the Millenium 2001 will land on PSN as a PS2 Classic next week, the Official PlayStation Blogcast has announced. No specific pricing information was given, but we feel safe in assuming that it'll probably cost around $10, like most other PS2 Classics on the service. Known as Capcom vs. SNK 2: Millionaire Fighting 2001 in Japan, the game originally hit arcades in (you guessed it) 2001, and was ported to Dreamcast, PlayStation 2, GameCube and Xbox thereafter. The game includes 48 characters from Capcom and SNK franchises such as Street Fighter, King of Fighters, Rival Schools, Fatal Fury, Darkstalkers and others.

Capcom is planning to bring its crossover fighter Capcom vs. SNK 2 to PlayStation 3 at the end of next month. Capcom USA senior vice president Christian Svensson put the company's formerly tentative plan into this timetable in a post on the Capcom-Unity forums. "Mind you, if Sony chooses, that could move," Svensson warned, adding "it is later than I had originally anticipated already."The other fighting game due for PS2 Classics release, the troubled Capcom Fighting Evolution, is still without a release date.

Both Capcom Fighting Evolution (Capcom Fighting Jam in Japan) and Capcom vs SNK 2 are available on PlayStation Network in Japan, leaving fighting fans in the US wanting of what was once a bad business idea. Capcom senior VP Christian Svensson offers a crumb of hope in the Capcom forums, saying both will be here "eventually."Svensson says we should hear more about both "next year," and that the "timing will be quite different though from Japan." We can't be sure what he means by the latter statement, but since both saw their reemergence as PS2 Classics on Japan's PSN months apart, it's possible there won't be such a gap between releases when they finally arrive in these parts.

In the words of Lord Cutler Beckett, it's just good business. Or, as Capcom's Seth Killian explained on the Capcom-Unity forums, releasing a downloadable version of Capcom vs. SNK 2 could be bad business. In a lengthy response to a call for the game on PSN, Killian gave several reasons for not re-releasing Capcom vs. SNK 2; all of them centered squarely on business. Among other things, the audience for the game is less sizable than that of Street Fighter and Marvel vs. Capcom 2, meaning a Capcom vs. SNK 2 port probably wouldn't be worth the money and resources Capcom would need to spend. Killian noted that even if sales covered cost, placing developers on the project would mean removing them from others, like Super Street Fighter IV. Killian put it simply, saying, "When fan service becomes a black hole for time and money, that party gets ended pretty quick." Another explanation, according to Killian, is that Capcom doesn't want to flood the market with fighting games. He suggested that most gamers only buy one or two fighting games a year -- thanks mainly to the amount of time it takes to master them. In other words, releasing too many games could dilute the sales of all of them. Besides, we all know that what Capcom should be working on is a new Darkstalkers. [Via EventHubs]
