  • Makerarm wants to 3D print, plot, and carve its way into your heart

If you want to do 3D filament printing, resin printing, carving, plotting, laser etching, and fabrication all at once, that'd get pretty expensive. However, there's now a product called Makerarm that does all of that. It mounts on your desk to let you make nearly anything and will even assemble all the parts. At least, that's the theory, because as a Kickstarter campaign, it's not a real product yet. Still, it shows lots of promise. Unlike a similar product, the Flux 3D printer, it's a free-swinging arm, meaning it can build fairly large objects and has more functionality with all its interchangeable heads.

We may not have held a pumpkin carving contest this year, but that didn't stop Joystiq pun'kin' veteran Dennis C. from creating a hauntingly gorgeous gourd for us all to gaze upon. Recreating two of the most nerve-racking scenes from Limbo's forest area, this carved masterpiece serves as an example of just how impressively captivating a hollowed out dead thing can be when given to the right artist.%Gallery-137923%

Remember that time when you sipped some herbal tea and thought, "I really want a pink gold ring?" Yeah, that was some good tea alright, but the brainiacs at the University of Southampton have actually found a way to achieve this potential fashion trendsetter. The idea is simple: rather than coating metals -- especially naturally colored ones like gold and copper -- with paint, these folks alter their color by using an ion beam to carve fine patterns that are smaller than visible light's wavelength. The resultant metamaterial dramatically boosts the metals' light absorption efficiency, thus reflecting a different color depending on the pattern's radius and etch depth. So for instance, gold can reflect colors ranging from orange to red to green to brown with its ring pattern etch depth ranging from 85nm to 205nm, respectively. See? We told you it's simple, but there's also some visual aid after the break to wrap up this science lesson.

  • Here's that video of Jason carving a Big Daddy out of a tree you wanted

It would be cool enough to see a ten-minute-long video showing a man carving an intricate statue of BioShock 2's Big Daddy out of a tree using a chainsaw. That coolness factor is multiplied by ten when the person doing the carving is dressed up like known overnight camp murderer, Jason Voorhees. A video like that would finally prove that the prolific butcher has a sensitive side, capable of creating lovely, intricate works of art with his manslaughter instruments. Such a video exists, dear friends, and is posted after the jump. You should check it out, because, man, tree carving is surprisingly hypnotic. [Via Kotaku]

  • Insider Trader: Woodworking in the expansion?

Insider Trader is your inside line on making, selling, buying and using player-made products.Ideas for a woodworking profession have been bounced around for years, but have previously been dodged by Blizzard. Although they assured us that they have plenty of ideas, they've always been working on too many others.Woodworking was not to be for Burning Crusade or Wrath of the Lich King, but what about the upcoming expansion? Considering that Goblins and Worgen could become playable, it might be a real possibility. In late summer 2007, Nethaera posted a list of some of the things that need to be considered before they can even begin to implement a new profession. While it became clear that it wasn't going to work for Wrath, it seems a little more plausible now. Today's column will be dedicated to presenting the crafting community's Woodworking ideas, discussing their implementation using the (incomplete) criteria set forth by Nethaera, and speculating about its possible presence in the next expansion.

When it comes to the Xbox 360 community, not all fanboys are created equal -- and neither are all pumpkins. We received around 20 entries in our carving contest and all of them (except for the odd photoshop fake) were better than the average jack-o-lantern. Richard and I would like to thank all the contestants for making this a competitive contest that proved Xbox 360 fanboys have Halloween spirit and artistic talent to spare. And special thanks to our prize sponsor RockMeTV.com for providing a copy of Gears of War to give away.Without further ado, please view the official results of our 1st Annual Xbox 360 Pumpkin Carving Contest after the jump

Last chance to cast your vote in our 1st Annual Xbox 360 Pumpkin Carving Contest and help decide who get Gears of War for the price of a pumpkin. The polls close at 12am EST, right about the time squash futures crash back to earth (to Homer Simpson's dismay). It pains me to think of these works of vegetable art rotting on someone's front porch. Thanks to all who participated in the contest-- except the Photoshop cheats. We will officially announce the winners on Wednesday evening.

What better way to spend a Sunday afternoon than carving an Xbox 360-themed Jack-O-Lantern for our 1st Annual Xbox 360 Pumpkin Carving Contest. Readers have submitted a number of quality efforts so far. We're accepting entries until late Monday and since everybody carves a pumpkin for Halloween anyway, there's really no exscuse for not putting blade to squash. Oh yeah -- First prize gets a copy of that under-the-radar sleeper title from Epic that you may have heard about. If you need inspiration, check out these the incredible pumkin art from last year's Halo.Bungie.org contest (Damn. I thought I had an original idea). They're holding the same thing again this year, so there's no reason you couldn't carve one Xbox-O-Lantern and enter it in both contests.
