Researchers are using silk cocoons to store blood samples

When doctors draw blood for analysis, it's vital that the sample either be immediately examined or refrigerated. That's because the proteins which indicate various diseases will either be destroyed by enzymes in the blood or deformed by ambient heat. Either way, the sample quickly becomes useless if you leave it sitting out. However a team of researchers from Tufts University have developed a new way to store samples without having to put them on ice by using silkworm cocoons.

When you run around town with a lot of technology, a good bag isn't just nice to have -- it's a necessity. In any one given day at Engadget, we might be attending a product launch, interviewing people or taking all those lovely sample shots you see around the site. A regular courier bag or rucksack will likely do the job, but do you really want all your work-essential kit rattling around in a cross-city spin cycle? No, us neither.

Welcome to Engadget's back to school guide! The end of summer vacation isn't nearly as much fun as the weeks that come before, but a chance to update your tech tools likely helps to ease the pain. Today, we're helping you keep all your gear organized -- and you can head to the back to school hub to see the rest of the product guides as they're added throughout the month. Be sure to keep checking back -- at the end of the month we'll be giving away a ton of the gear featured in our guides -- and hit up the hub page right here! Trying to pack a load of gadgets, peripherals and a laptop into your average book bag usually isn't the most ideal setup -- especially when it's time to grab what you need throughout the day. To solve that dilemma, we've selected more than a handful of sacks and cases that'll keep your gear at hand and organized so that you'll spend less time rummaging for your gizmos and more time exploring your campus. Best of all, you can rest assured knowing many of the selections past the break are goods that we here at Engadget even rely on to get our gear in and out of the various events we attend -- jump past the break to see our picks.

Denon's got a snazzy new pair of iPhone speaker docks to show the world -- the Cocoon Home and Cocoon Portable. The Home features AirPlay streaming from iPhones, iPods, Mac and PCs through 100 watts of total power. Its 25-percent smaller sibling has 50 watts of power and battery life of up to five hours. Both docks will be hitting this summer for $599 and $499, respectively. We're crossing our fingers for a Steve Guttenberg spokesman deal. Full press details after the break.

It's not often that the press shots of a given handset actually don't do the thing justice, but the real live pictures of the O2 Cocoon actually impress quite a bit more than we could have imagined. This futuristic (and dirt-attracting) clamshell sports an all white exterior, crisp internal display, contrasting keypad, and a unique LED display that's sure to spark up conversation. You know the deal, take a closer look after the break.[Via Slashphone]

We're an admittedly jaded group when it comes to new mobile tech and handsets but, O2's new Cocoon has us sitting up and taking notice. This winsome flipper sports an LED display hidden behind what appears to be an opaque housing that lights up to show song info, caller ID and the like. Featuring a pretty slick control panel on the side, 2GB of internal memory, expandability via MicroSD, Bluetooth A2DP, and a 2 megapixel shooter with flash, it does seem to be packin' all the necessary bits and bobs. In the radio department, we find triple-band GSM / GPRS and 3G -- no details on the frequencies offered here, but we can guess they will be Eurocentric. Look for it on O2 UK in August for a wallet-stinging $590 off contract.
