Glastonbury Festival will livestream a concert series for the first time
The Glastonbury Festival is holding its first livestreamed event on May 22nd, with big groups like Coldplay and Haim in the lineup.
Coldplay's Chicago concert will stream live in VR on August 17th
If you weren't already convinced that live VR concerts are hitting the mainstream, you might be now. Samsung is partnering with Live Nation (which is no stranger to the concept) to offer a Coldplay concert in VR on August 17th at 9:30PM Eastern. If you have a Gear VR headset, you can watch Chris Martin and crew take to the stage in Chicago with an extra level of immersion. There will also be a replay available "for a limited time" afterward if it clashes with your schedule.
Spotify is going to keep missing out on big albums
According to The Wall Street Journal's sources, Coldplay's new album won't be streaming on Spotify. Before you shrug, mutter something insulting about Coldplay and walk away, this is actually quite important. It's indicative of the continued rift between music labels and the number one streaming service in the world, Spotify. Coldplay (Ghost Stories and Mylo Xyloto), Adele (21), the Black Keys (Turn Blue), and Taylor Swift (Red and 1989) have all withheld albums from the service temporarily or indefinitely for a single reason: the company's free tier.
Paul McCartney: 'You can keep free streaming for the birds and bees, now give me money'
A wise man once told Engadget that streaming and bought music services could live side-by-side like a piano keyboard. It looks like impoverished multi-millionaire Sir Paul McCartney didn't hear that particular song, as he's withdrawn all of his music from streaming service Rhapsody, after doing the same to Spotify some time ago. He's the latest in a long line of impecunious artists including Adele, Coldplay and Tom Waits, who have done the same as they feel they're not getting fair compensation for their labors. It would be cynical to point out that McCartney's move comes just ahead of a live performance that's exclusively streamed on the iTunes music store and Apple TV, so we won't.
Apple kicks off 12 Days of iTunes, offers a dozen freebies to last into 2012
Find yourself something Apple-flavored underneath the Christmas tree yesterday? Need some gentle coaxing into using iTunes? Well, you're in luck; Cupertino's annual download giveaway starts today and runs through January 6th. The free gifts kick off with some Coldplay tracks and videos from the band's latest Apple-sponsored festival appearance. But don't let that put you off; we expect to see more music, some apps and even books over the next few days. Each one's available for just 24 hours, so it could be worth checking the dedicated app daily. It's up for grabs at the link below. Update: The app appears to be Europe-only at the moment. No news just yet on whether a US edition will make an appearance later today. Let us know in the comments if you're able to grab the free gifts.
Retro gadget orchestra nails House of the Rising Sun, puts your garage band to shame (video)
YouTube user BD594, also known as James Cochrane, is no stranger to pushing retro tech to its musical limits. Back in 2009 he coaxed a scanner, an Atari 800XL and a host of other antiquated gadgets to perform Bohemian Rhapsody. The results, while certainly enjoyable, were a tad tone deaf. Well, in the years since he's tweaking his "musicians" and his orchestra has just issued its second single -- a stunning rendition of House of the Rising Sun, in the style of the Animals. Seriously, this staple of '60s high school rockstar wannabes is absolutely nailed by the assortment of hard drives, oscilloscopes and the scanner. Cochrane isn't alone in his quest to turn obsolete tech into musical magic. Christopher Mitchell managed to hack a Ti graphing calculator and floppy-disk drive into a monophonic media player. While his accomplishment is impressive, he loses this round for wasting his skills on the saccharin stylings of Cold Play. Check out both videos after the break.
MMObility: The clever design behind War of Dragons
Ah, the things that rev up the imagination of gamers. Right now I can almost feel the excitement as players all over the world are waiting to jump into games like Skyrim or Star Wars the Old Republic. I'm a bit excited as well, but honestly none of those titles tantalizes me like some of the browser-based goodies I have been playing lately. It could be the model railroad world of RuneScape or the epic scale of Illyriad that is inspiring me, making me spend hours of dog walking or drinking tea while daydreaming of game creation. I've also stumbled across this newish world of semi-graphical, browser-based, MUD-like MMOs. They have shown me that text and description can still be very powerful tools, especially mixed with graphics or even basic animation. Then I stumbled upon War of Dragons, a wonderful browser-based MMO that shows me just how amazing browser-based gaming can be. Click past the cut and I'll explain.

Rock Band celebrates Facebook milestone with Stevie Wonder, Coldplay, Breaking Benjamin, and Dream Theater
In honor of the Rock Band Facebook page topping 2 million "Likes," Harmonix decided to let news loose a bit early about some varied, excellent artists arriving on Rock Band 3's DLC service in the "coming weeks and months." We're actually inclined to skip right over two of the groups -- Breaking Benjamin and Dream Theater -- as they've both already had DLC tracks added to RB3 in the past. Here are the two brand new biggies: Stevie Wonder and Coldplay. We simply cannot say "Hooray!" loudly enough. No mention is made of which songs specifically will be launched, but Coldplay, Breaking Benjamin, and Stevie Wonder all have full track packs on the way, while Dream Theater's keeping it more low key with a single. Perhaps if you go "like" the Facebook page we can get Stevie Wonder right now? Maybe just one track, even? [Thanks, libregkd]
Three new track packs available for iPhone Guitar Hero
The in-app music store for Activision's pint-sized iPhone port of Guitar Hero has been updated with three new $1.99 song packs. The first includes one tune each from Band of Horses, Coldplay and Nada Surf, while the second and third each feature three tracks from KISS and Motörhead, respectively.

US SingStore adds Blondie, individual Coldplay tracks
Brace your faces, karaoke fans -- SingStar's US store has added even more content to help you sing the night away. This week the US SingStore has added a Blondie song pack comprised of five hits from the 70s-80s phenom as well as individual Coldplay tracks, originally released together as a package a few months ago.The store is also adding a few international flavors with tracks from (the awesome) Los Delinquentes with fellow Spanish star Bebe and Portugal's ironically named (because he's totally not a giant) Sir Giant. New RIM ad shows deep appreciation for U2, Apple's ad team
Yeah, we're sure there are only so many ways you can feature a bit of Brian Eno-produced stadium rock in space in support of your hip, relevant tech company, but we'd say RIM copped a bit much of Apple's style in its new U2 ad. Check out "BlackBerry loves U2" and its iTunes-touting Coldplay inspiration after the break for all the shimmering, uncanny similarities. Though, to be fair, Apple has done its own share of ad swipes in the past, so perhaps RIM was just looking to imitate the master?
Wrap your Lips around Coldplay, Hinder, 311 and more
Those in need of more sweet, sour and slightly bitter DLC should direct their mouths eyes to Microsoft's latest list of upcoming Lips content.Over the next three weeks, the Xbox Live Marketplace will receive new Lips music from bands including Angels and Airwaves, The Rasmus, Hinder, Metro Station and a three-pack of songs from Coldplay. Also, a title update will be released sometime in March, providing "improved scoring, better vibrato detection and initiate global leaderboards."View a complete menu of upcoming Lips DLC after the break and start choosing which songs look appetizing enough to consume purchase.
Viva la vida! Coldplay GHIII DLC is now available
A reminder for those who, with the aid of Guitar Hero III, were looking forward to jamming out to Coldplay this week, your downloadable content is now available. The GHIII Coldplay Track Pack, featuring the songs "Violet Hill", "Yellow" and "God Put A Smile Upon Your Face", is now ready for your 500 Microsoft point purchase off the XBLM. So, this being a reminder, you can go and get your Coldplay DLC purchase on if you so choose. Also, seeing that this is probably going to be our last post talking about Coldplay, we feel the need to sneak in their Apple iTunes commercial. We thoroughly enjoy the purple and blue smoke that emits from the band as they play ... it's freakin' b-e-a-utiful!
Coldplay's new single, two more tracks coming to Guitar Hero III
Just in case you hadn't heard via, oh, every manner of media possible, British rockers Coldplay will have a new album, Viva la Vida, on shelves (and your favorite music download service) June 17. Today Activision announced that a dose of Coldplay DLC will hit Guitar Hero III two days later on June 19.The Coldplay track pack will contain three songs, including "Violet Hill," the first single from Viva la Vida. "Yellow" and "God Put a Smile on Your Face" from the album A Rush of Blood to the Head round out the set. Activision has yet to price the goods, but three-song packs have historically run 500 MS points via Xbox Live and $6.25 on PSN.[update: Activision sends along confirmation that the Coldplay track pack will, in fact, set you back 500 MS points or $6.25 on XBL and PSN, respectively.]
Coldplay to make Guitar Hero debut
According to Entertainment Weekly, British music act Coldplay have said that their single, Violet Hill, will be on Guitar Hero. The article did not specify which Guitar Hero this will be, but it's more likely than not to be Guitar Hero III since it was mentioned that the track will be DLC. The downloadable song is part of a huge publicity campaign for the band's new album, Vida La Vida, which is out June 17. A date was also not specified, but it's safe to assume that Violet Hill will appear sometime before, around, or on June 17.[Via X3F]
