If you could upload your consciousness before dying and live on forever in a posh, cushy digital afterlife, would you do it? In addition to finding out which of the team would “upload” if they could, we also discussed the many gadgets and apps that enrich the world of Upload, as well as whether such an upload is a true transference of consciousness. The notion has been explored in more recent shows like Altered Carbon and Black Mirror, and Upload is one of the latest to envision digital immortality.

Sphero just announced a new app-controlled robot a few days ago, the Mini, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have anything else in the works. The company has now revealed the latest member of its Star Wars family, R2-Q5, the Empire's version of the beloved R2-D2 character. As is the case with all of Sphero's toys, you can take charge of R2-Q5 via its Droids app for iOS and Android, where you'll be able to drive it, hear it make sounds and use it to play various mini games. You'll need to act fast if you want one for yourself: Sphero says the number of R2-Q5 numbers made is in the "low thousands," and Best Buy has an exclusive on it in the US, while John Lewis has that honor in the UK. Pre-orders are open now for $200/£200, with shipping expected to happen November 5th.

The San Diego Comic-Con is underway, and Netflix kicked things off with a few announcements about its various Marvel superhero series. Luke Cage is due September 30th, and its teaser trailer brings about a minute and a half of Mike Colter fighting bad guys in hallways. The Iron Fist series' release date is still TBA, but its trailer showed off a hint of what's to come there as well. Last but not least the preview for The Defenders leaves much more to the imagination but lets us know that as originally promised, Cage, Jessica Jones, Daredevil and Iron Fist will team up to take on bad guys in 2017. Speaking of Daredevil, Netflix also confirmed that the Hell's Kitchen hero will get a third season which is "coming soon" -- check out all the videos below.

San Diego Comic-Con doesn't take place until July, but when it does, you'll have an option to stream coverage and gain other "exclusive access" with a new service. Comic-Con is working with Lionsgate on a streaming service that will not only offer coverage of its events, but also populate a library of movies and TV series alongside original shows and commentary. The subscription service, dubbed Comic-Con HQ, will launch in beta form on Comic Book Day, May 7th. During the initial trial period, beta users can expect unlimited access to the service free of charge, including live coverage of this year's San Diego soirée.

Recommended Reading highlights the best long-form writing on technology and more in print and on the web. Some weeks, you'll also find short reviews of books that we think are worth your time. We hope you enjoy the read. Comic-Con Makes Everyone a Pirate: The 'Problem' of Leaked Trailers by Susana Polo Polygon As you can probably imagine, studio execs weren't too happy that early footage from Deadpool and Suicide Squad leaked online last week. Well, that's what they said, at least. Cellphone video was taken at private events and posted for the world to see. This isn't the first time this has happened to Warner Bros. and yet the company still brings "exclusive" trailers to the supposedly behind-closed-doors events. Does Comic-Con have a piracy problem or are studios counting on leaks to help build hype for highly anticipated films?

If you try to book a hotel room in San Diego in September, you can probably get one for around $200-300 a night. If you try to do the same in mid-July during Comic-Con? You'll likely have to cough up close to $1,000 a night, and that's if you can get a room at all. If you're an Airbnb host, it'd behoove you to know about these sorts of surges in demand, so you can price your room appropriately. Today, Airbnb has rolled out a tool called Price Tips that lets you do just that. It utilizes Airbnb's own machine learning tool called Aerosolve that'll suggest room pricing based on the demand for rooms, its location, travel trends, the listing type and so forth.

  • Comic-Con is going to last all year ... through video-on-demand

Can't make it down to San Diego for the annual geek Mecca that is Comic-Con? Well, you'll soon be able to get a taste of it on your couch. Comic-Con International announced this morning that it's teaming up with Lionsgate, the studio behind the blockbuster Hunger Games franchise, to launch a subscription-based video-on-demand service later this year. As you'd expect, it'll include plenty of archival footage from the convention, "exclusive" short content and movies and shows from Lionsgate. Given that Comic-Con lasts a scant four days (only three of which have major events), it's difficult to imagine how a standalone VOD channel could host enough content to last a year. And it's also unclear what the exclusive content will be for subscribers.

  • Live improv saves the day when Witcher 3 SDCC panel goes awry

Pop quiz, hotshot. You're at the San Diego Comic-Con panel for The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt. A demo showing live gameplay has started, but none of the characters' voices are working. You've got a packed room full of fans who want to see the game in presentable condition, and not enough time to start over and try again. What do you do? What do you do? Well, if you're Doug Cockle, voice actor behind Witcher series hero Geralt of Rivia, you start performing your lines live. Despite the potentially embarrassing circumstances, Witcher 3 developer CD Projekt RED has taken its technologically-challenged SDCC panel and made it available for viewing in a video showing Cockle's live improv outtakes. If you've ever wanted to hear Geralt call a big, burly bald man "cute," well ... now's your chance. [Image: CD Projekt RED]

  • Battlefield Hardline's story makes good cops bad cops

We can't uphold or defy the law in Battlefield: Hardline until 2015, but thanks to San Diego Comic-Con, we can get a sense of what will unfold in its single-player content right now. According to Polygon's report, Hardline's story follows a pair of straight-shooting cops as they're set up by another group. As a result of being framed, they land in prison, faced with fighting their way out before settling the score with the people who put them there. Polygon notes a video shown to panel attendees depicted urban environments, as well as a scene following Hardline's lead cops as they storm a cocaine warehouse in a desert-like area. A crime lord named Roark owns the facility, and given his profession and choice of locale, we can't imagine he's receptive of any stop-ins from local law enforcement. Eugene Byrd (Bones), Kelly Hu (Arrow) and Benito Martinez (The Shield) will have significant roles in Hardline's story, with Mark Rolston (The Departed) playing Roark. Wendy Calhoun, co-producer of Justified, is serving as a narrative consultant, with The West Wing editor Bill Johnson working as Hardline's performance director. [Image: EA]

The Walking Dead: Season 3 was confirmed yesterday at San Diego Comic-Con, much to the delight of fans and emotional masochists. We're not even sure how Clementine and co.'s travels will end in Season 2, but time - and the shuffling hordes of undead - wait for no man. Season 3 is coming, prepare while you can. Which ... might be awhile. Or not! We're not really sure, as no details regarding a release window were given. Oh, those darn zombies - so inconsiderate to not let us know when they plan on dropping by. [Image: Telltale Games]

Legendary Pictures has a special treat for Pacific Rim fans visiting San Diego Comic-Con this weekend: the chance to pilot a Jaeger, one of the giant monster-punching robots from Guillermo Del Toro's 2013 action flick. Using the Oculus Rift, attendees can step into the virtual cockpit of the Jaeger Gipsy Danger as it fights off the Kaiju (see: giant monster) named Knifehead. The VR demo is built in Unreal Engine 4, using the original film assets created by Industrial Light & Magic. Unfortunately, the promo video above doesn't show anything from inside the experience and Legendary has not said anything regarding a public demo, so those of us not in San Diego will have to settle for playing pretend without the benefit of hundreds-of-dollars-worth of technology strapped to our faces. Oh well. *insert Pacific Rim theme song* Dunnuh-duh dunnuh-DUNNNN ... [Image: Legendary Pictures]

The Mishima clan has got some issues to resolve, and based on details shared by producer Katsuhiro Harada through a translator at Comic-Con, it seems like Tekken 7 will help the family finally get it all out in the open. As reported by Polygon, Harada said Tekken 7's plot will answer a few Tekken mysteries, such as why Heihachi chucked his son Kazuya off a cliff. It was revealed that Tekken 7 will feature the work of seven guests artists, including Yusuke Kozaki (Fire Emblem: Awakening), Mari Shimazaki (Bayonetta), Ninnin (Duel Masters) and Kenichiro Yoshimura (Anarchy Reigns). Sporting a redesign by Ninnin, Lars was also confirmed to be among Tekken 7's playable roster. Considering Lars is the son of Heihachi and the half-brother of Kazuya, two prevalent characters in the Mishima clan's storied history, it makes sense for Lars to be around when the Mishima drama starts wrapping up. • The next Mass Effect might be about you and yours

The next Mass Effect will not revolve around Commander Shepard and crew, according to a BioWare Comic-Con panel. However, Phil Hornshaw of GameFront tweeted that the game's hero will have "something to do" with N7, the military designation for special forces soldiers with the highest levels of proficiency in badassery, which Shepard was a part of before becoming savior of the galaxy. So if the game isn't about Shepard, who is it about? Andrea Rene of The Escapist snapped some offscreen pics of a customizable hero labeled "your hero," as well as a picture of a new version of the Mako landrover from the original Mass Effect. Interestingly, this Mako was referred to as "your Mako." Does the "your" imply customization options? Are we playing as ourselves? Unfortunately, such questions won't be answered for awhile, if ever. Hornshaw reports that the BioWare panelists caution that the game is years away, and things can change between now and then.

  • Rob Zombie's Assassin's Creed short is ultra-violent - surprised?

Betcha didn't see that coming, did you? Who in the world could have guessed that a digital short about the French Revolution and the Reign of Terror, directed by Rob Zombie (House of 1,000 Corpses) and illustrated by Tony Moore (The Walking Dead comic), would be so violent and horrifying? Thanks for sharing, UbiBlog! Okay, we kid. Right from the announcement that Zombie and Moore would debut an animated short at Comic-Con this year, anyone could have guessed that the flick would be anything but puppies and rainbows. Still, things get seriously M for Mature here, as the short features plenty of decapitations, grisly injuries and a close-up eye stabbing. Maybe don't watch if you've just eaten. [Image: Ubisoft]
