The gang at Adafruit Industries are on a mission -- and they won't rest until every man, woman, and child on this planet has access to the DIY and open source electronics they crave. The most recent project of theirs, Citizen Engineer: SIM Card Hacking, is a comic book that both serves as a primer on GSM and SIM cards and tells you how to build a SIM card reader. And if that weren't awesome enough, if you purchase the title for $35 they'll throw in the reader kit -- either enabling your thirst for knowledge or jump-starting you on your path towards a new life as a hacker / fixer for the Russian Mafia. You probably forgot about it in all the shaman-loving, melee-hating, troll-centric patch fever, but World of Warcraft #1 came out in comic book stores Wednesday. For those of you without access to the book -- or maybe those who want to know the story without carrying around a giant GEEK! GEEK! sign -- I've summarized the plot and characters here. Spoilers follow beyond the cut, so beware!

  • Breakfast topic: Are you going to read the WoW comic?

Among many other fine personality traits, my boyfriend happens to run a comic book store. As such, he's gotten a lot of phone calls recently about the World of Warcraft comic book that's coming out next month. The success of the Halo comic has led him to order extra copies of the WoW book, but he's uncertain about how well it will do. The comic definitely appeals to a niche audience, and a lot of players aren't too interested in lore, so those are factors working against it. But the book also has some top-notch writers, and no one ever went broke counting on WoW players to be kind of crazy about WoW-related stuff. This could mean a lot of walk-ins from WoW players on the street desperate for more stories from their favorite game. I'm definitely going to check it out -- it'll make a great Know Your Lore, and I'm a hopeless WoW addict anyway. Plus, one of the dudes in the book is using a Thunderfury! How cool is that? Are you planning to read the comic book when it comes out? Why or why not?

A little while back, we heard from Upper Deck that there would be a new set of holiday cards coming out for the Feast of Winter Veil ingame holiday, and now reader Dave C has spotted a preview for the cards in the aptly named Previews magazine. If I recall correctly from my comic collecting days, Previews is a magazine for retailers published by a distributor so they can know what's coming in the next few months and how many of each product to order. At any rate, what's important is that they have a short preview of the upcoming holiday set, and while specifics are still unclear, we're told that each set will have ten exclusive game cards, two Pet mini-cards, three booster packs, and a special "Feast of Winter's Veil" box in it. Unfortunately for the MMO players, none of these cards will be ingame loot cards, but as we said when we first heard about this set, it might be a nice gift for someone who plays the card game itself.Dave also says the Previews issue has a three page preview of the WoW comic book, and obviously WoW shows up on the cover as well. So expect a lot of WoW-related goodies hitting your local comic book store this holiday season.

Halo fans who like to dabble in some comic book reading every now and then have been eagerly anticipating the Halo: Uprising comic book series since its targeted July 18th release. And after a few delays for which we don't know the reason for Bungie and Marvel are ready to release the first of four in the Halo: Uprising comic book series. The first comic officially went on sale August 22nd and its story will fill in the gap between where Halo 2 ended and Halo 3 begins. We're sure the story and artwork are top notch, so fork over your $4 and purchase a copy whenever you visit your local comic book shop. That is, if comic book shops still exist (kidding!).[Via Xbox 360 Rally]

  • More info on the Warcraft comic

BlizzPlanet's got a promotional writeup on the new World of Warcraft comic from DC (which we're supposed to be receiving a few copies of anytime now, I believe, here at WI Headquarters-- I'll go check my mailbox). As we've heard, the comic will have a Human protagionist (boo!). Fortunately, an Orc Shaman will play a big part, too (cheer!). A human is found unconscious on the shores of Kalimdor, with no memory of who he is or how he arrived there. Enslaved by the Orc Shaman Rehgar Earthfury, this man must fight for survival against members of both the Alliance and the Horde, striking uneasy relationships with other races in his quest to find the secrets of his past!Wait, check out that pic-- he was found unconscious on the shores... with Thunderfury? Weird.WorldofWar also points out that the comic may or may not touch upon the Missing Diplomat quest series, which many, many players are very interested in seeing an end do. I think it'd be kind of a cop out if they finished the quest off in the book (and never finished it in the game), but I guess we'll see.Are you guys excited about this or not? Seems like you'd have to be a comic book fan to go for this one, as I doubt many WoW fans will be running into comic stores for the first time to buy it. But if you like both, maybe you'll like this.

We plunge GameTrailers for today's video pick, a Hellboy trailer that makes us tentatively look forward to comic franchises again since the Neversoft Ghost Rider game that never was. Of course it's still just a trailer, and a lot can change before the game is released this summer. But Hellboy looks good, with its 3D engine rendering in a style that fits its comic history.Judge for yourself after the break.

Comic Book DS, a nifty little homebrew application, allows users to view comics or pictures on their DS. We haven't given it a whirl yet, but you can check out some impressions from 4cr here. Eric over at 4cr also gives a step-by-step rundown on how you can get your comics onto the DS, as well as navigating them through the application.Personally, we're looking forward to scanning some of our Berserk mangas and having at it. Anyone else give the program a whirl?[Thanks George!]
