We have no shortage of shiny, life-like HD games these days, but if you'd like to revisit older titles from a bygone era, Sega has got your back. The video game company has just officially launched the first wave of the Sega Forever collection with five titles meant to begin "a retro revolution that will transport players back through two decades of console gaming." Starting today, the 1991 version of Sonic the Hedgehog, fan-favorite RPG Phantasy Star II, classic arcade-style beat 'em up Comix Zone, platformer Kid Chameleon and Greek mythology-themed beat 'em up Altered Beast will be available on Google Play and iTunes as free ad-supported games. If you have an iPhone or an iPad, your games will even come accompanied by iMessage sticker packs.

We don't see many features about individual Virtual Console games, which is kind of a shame. We love talking about old games, and we kind of thought other people did too. And since we can't download demos, it's beneficial for bloggers to talk up their favorite VC games and let people know what's good, or even what these games are. That's why we're highlighting this article on Comix Zone over at GayGamer. While their recurring feature isn't always going to be about Virtual Console games (it's about comics-related games), we're happy to point you to it now that it is. And don't forget to check out our own Virtually Overlooked feature every Thursday for the best Virtual Console games that aren't Virtual Console games yet. And let us know if you've found some in-depth VC game features!

And to think, people assume Nintendo's all kid-friendly! Okay, okay, so sometimes the thug lifestyle is a little colorful when it's designed for the Big N. Still, this week's European VC lineup proves that Nintendo's all about being hard ... at least, when it's tongue-in-cheek or in outer space. Check out this wacky trio of titles up on the block today. Any of them strike your fancy? Bonanza Bros. (Sega Mega Drive) -- 800 points Comix Zone (Sega Mega Drive) -- 800 points Gradius (NES) -- 500 points

Last Monday, Nintendo's excellent Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past sat around, waiting for its friends from Sega to make their way onto Nintendo's fledgling Virtual Console service. We don't need to tell you that they never showed up. Until now that is.This week another seminal Nintendo title, Mario Kart 64, is being joined by Bonanza Bros. and Comix Zone -- two of the three promised Genesis titles (despite what Sega's website says) -- with the forgettable Gain Ground being pleasantly replaced with the similarly 16-bit SNES title, Super Probotector: Alien Rebels ... errr, rather Contra III: The Alien Wars. Normal VC prices apply to this batch: N64 titles fetch 1000 Wii Points while SNES and Genesis titles go for 800 Wii Points.

Sega has 5 more titles planned for the Wii's Virtual Console service and they're pretty damn good games! Not only are we finally getting the classic beat-em-up Streets of Rage, but we're also getting the greatly underappreciated title Comix Zone. To tell you all the truth, those two games are in our top 5 for favorite Genesis games of all time (our first choice, which is Gunstar Heroes, is already on the VC).Sadly, the 800 Wii Point standard for Genesis titles could be broken, as Sega is stating that prices for these games are to "start at 800 Wii Points," meaning Sega could pull a fast one on all of us in the way that Hudson did, jacking up the price for their titles. We expect that only Streets of Rage really has any reason to cost more than that, due to its incredible popularity in the gaming community. All five games to be offered include: Streets of Rage Comix Zone Bio-Hazard Battle Gain Ground Bonanza Bros. [Thanks 20XX; via Joystiq!]

The disc will not only come loaded with the games, but exclusive interviews and behind-the-scenes footage. PSP owners can rejoice in knowing that an exclusive wireless multiplayer mode is being created just for them. Maybe it'll even support Game Sharing? (I hope so!)
