HP's new UMPC 2133 hotness to run VIA, not Penryn?
If that new HP Compaq 2133 is hitting your ultraportable sweet spot, there's more news on that front to drool over. UMPC Portal has word from a supposed industry insider that the computer is not running an Intel chip as previously suggested, but instead will rock the range of VIA processors. That means the computer could fight it out with Eee PC in the low-end with a C7 processor, or adopt one of those upcoming Isaiah chips and duke it out with Penryn ultraportables. If this is true it'd be a big win for VIA, and consumers might just get some budget-friendly excitement out of the deal as well.
HP facing lawsuit over exploding Presario, injured daughter
A Little Rock, Arkansas man is taking HP to court over a faulty Compaq Presario that he says is to blame for burning his house down and causing serious injury to his daughter. The Wal-Mart-bought computer seemed perfectly fine until it suddenly burst into flames, catching his entire house on fire. His daughter had to jump out of a second story window to escape the fire, and sustained burns, physical injuries and "extreme mental anguish." As if it wasn't bad enough having a Presario in the first place. The lawsuit names unspecified monetary damages.
More Penryn laptops surface from Toshiba, Lenovo and HP Compaq
If you've just now finished shuffling through yesterday's barrage of mobile Penryn-based laptops, here's yet another helping for you to try and digest. Security exploit bricks HP and Compaq laptops
A Polish security researcher calling himself porkythepig is apparently gunning hard for HP this month, first exposing a slew of vulnerabilities that affected 83 different HP and Compaq models ten days ago, and today releasing an exploit that allows an attacker to brick any HP or Compaq laptop. The 'sploit takes advantage of a vulnerable ActiveX control in HP's Software Update, allowing a hacker to easily corrupt Windows kernel files, or even take control of the machine with a little more effort. Porkythepig says the bug affects HP and Compaq laptops running Windows 2000, XP, Server 2003 and Vista, and that simply disabling the Software Update mechanism may not prevent attackers from taking advantage of the vulnerability. Even still, those of you out there running HP / Compaq machines may want take a second to shut down Software Update until HP issues a patch.Update: Wow, we didn't realize how seriously everyone took their slang. For what it's worth, the definition of "bricked" has caused some amusingly serious discussion amongst Engadget editors today, and most agree that it should mean "dead beyond all repair" -- except for Nilay, who keeps stubbornly saying that people "un-brick" devices all the time. HP to add SSD options to business-minded laptops
We know that when it comes to a company like HP, you cats hang on its every word, waiting for a juicy tidbit of information, quietly hoping to be privy to another life-altering, ingenious decision. Well listen up folks, because we've got news. According to a report today, HP will be begin offering solid-state drives as an option for all of its professional series laptops, including the HP Compaq 2710p, 2510p, 6910p, and 8000 lines. The company's first NAND flash offering will be a whopping 64GB SSD, adding about $1000 in additional cost to the systems, though the company expects the prices to drop as solid-state proliferation increases. In all seriousness, HP isn't always on the cutting edge, but this is a smart decision, which -- luckily for us -- seems to be cropping up all over the map.
HP rolls out Compaq 6520s, 6720s, 6820s laptops
Hope you're not tired of HP gear yet, 'cause the company's also got a trio of new laptops competing for your attention today. Those include the 14.1-inch 6520, 15.4-inch 6720s model, and the 17-inch 6820s model, each of which boast your choice of Core 2 Duo or Celeron processors, along with hard drives up to 160GB and RAM up to 2GB (or 4GB on the 17-inch model). Otherwise, you can expect the usual Intel GMA X3100 graphics on the two smaller models or ATI Mobility Radeon X1350 graphics on the 17 incher, with a Blu-ray drive also an exclusive option to the 6820s, and an ExpressCard slot, SD card slot, and built-in Bluetooth standard across the board. Still no word on pricing of availability, although each are said to be "affordable."
HP and Compaq unveil new AMD-powered laptops
Shortly after loosing a slew of AMD-based desktops, HP and Compaq have now unleashed a trio of Pavilion and Presario laptops powered by Advanced Micro Devices. The 17-inch Pavilion dv9500z series offers up a nice selection of AMD Turion 64 X2 processors, Windows Vista, up to 4GB of DDR2 RAM, an NVIDIA GeForce Go 7150M (or optional 8400M GS), WiFi / Bluetooth, a built-in webcam and microphone, an optional Verizon Wireless V740 ExpressCard, up to 500GB of HDD storage, a dual-layer DVD writer (or a HD DVD reading drive), and an eight-cell Li-ion to boot. The slightly smaller (that's 15.4-inches, for those keeping count) Pavilion dv6500z series offers up a fairly similar array of specs in a more compact chassis, while the lower-end 15.4-inch Compaq Presario V6500Z series steps down to an AMD Sempron and offers up less upgrades. All three units can be ordered right now through HP's website, and while the Compaq unit starts at $499, the dv6500z and dv9500z get going at $749.99 and $999.99, respectively.[Via NotebookReview]
HP Compaq's 2210b/CT ultraportable aims for the suits
As you'd expect with any laptop carrying a corporate agenda, the 12.1-inch HP Compaq 2210b/CT isn't anything too riveting, but it's not a half bad option if you're scouting something small (and strictly for the office). Weighing in at just 3.7-pounds, this ultraportable packs a modest 1.86GHz Celeron processor, 512MB of RAM, an 80GB hard drive, an optional integrated optical drive, a 1,280 x 800 resolution panel, Vista Home Basic, and your choice of a four- or eight-cell battery. Additionally, you'll find an SD card slot, a trio of USB 2.0 ports, VGA / S-Video outputs, gigabit Ethernet, audio in / out, and an ExpressCard slot to make that 3G wireless card feel at home. HP Compaq 2710p tablet previewed
TabletPCReview got their hands on the HP Compaq 2710p tablet PC recently, and have given their first impressions of the unit: in a sentence, it's not very well featured, but it is well designed and has decent performance. In a little more detail, the review mentions that the hinge component allows very little wobble of the -- grainy but bold -- widescreen, the pen is made out of decent plastic, and the 2710p "did great" performance wise. We have a little inkling that "great" is only great in the context of other tablet PCs, but if that's what the competition is, who's complaining?
HP Compaq's 2710p Tablet PC in the wild and shipping
You won't find a press release for it, but the wait for the 12-inch, HP Compaq 2710p Tablet PC is over. Orders placed with HP today will ship July 25th or August 3rd if you opt for the $199 1xEV-DO (Verizon) Broadband module for full-on wWAN connectivity. In fact, AVING already has pics of the sleek, 3.6-pound, LED backlit convertible mucking about in the wild including this shot of it snuggled up to, and publicly mounting its docking station after a few too many celebratory champagnes. New HP Pavilions, Presarios announced
Something must be in the air this week, at least when it comes to announcements. Almost in tandem with Dell, Hewlett-Packard has entered the fray to show off its phantasmagorical selection of desktop-delights. Nothing groundbreaking here, but a decent cross section of models to choose from, including the small-form-factor Pavilion Slimline s3100n and s3120n, mid-range models a6110n, a6120n and a6130n, and two new media center Pavilions, the m8100n and m8120n. Also on offer are the Compaq Presario SR5110NX and SR5130NX, on a more budget-friendly tip. The majority of these feature the NVIDIA GeForce 6150 SE integrated graphics chipset and Windows Vista Home Premium. HP Compaq's 2510p laptop snapped in the wild
Sure, Apple's latest 15-inch MacBook Pro may have stolen the thunder from HP Compaq's 2510p by getting its LED-backlit machine out to customers first, but for the purely Wintel crowd, this one's sure to please. In some foreign lair, the amigos (and chicas) over at TecnoSquad were able to apprehend a loose 2510p laptop long enough to snap a few detailed pictures showing off its exterior and even its posture while parked in a docking station. You already know what's inside, so make sure you leap past the jump in order to catch some external photos including one that unscientifically shows it as the brightest of the three pictured machines.
HP Compaq's 2510p laptop / 2710p tablet to rock LED displays
If you can somehow look back all the way to this year's humble beginnings, you'd know that HP was already whispering about LED-backlit laptops, and while it's taken a tick to hear something official, it looks like the long-awaited upgrade to LED-based displays will be landing shortly. The HP Compaq 2510p 12.1-inch laptop and 2710p tablet PC will reportedly be the first two on the list to receive such treatment, and while we've already seen the majority of the specifications for the both of 'em, the tantalizing Illumi-Lite display is definitely icing on the cake. Unfortunately, pricing information is still being held behind tight lips, but the firm's duo of LED-packin' machines are scheduled to ship out in Q3 of this year.
HP gets official with new laptop lineup
There's not a lot of surprises given all the leaks we've seen, but HP has now officially taken the wraps of its expansive new lineup of laptops, all of which are based on Intel's new Santa Rosa platform. On the consumer front, the company's introducing a slew of new Pavilion laptops, including the dv2000 series, dv6000 series, dv9000 series, and the previously-announced beast that is the Pavilion HDX. Of the less gargantuan laptops, three new models pack 14.1-inch, 15.4-inch, and 17-inch widescreen displays, respectively, and each come loaded with a variety of Core 2 Duo processors, Nvidia GeForce 8400M graphics, built-in webcams (optional in some models), and integrated WiFi (including 802.11n in some models). Look for these to boast starting prices of $999, $949, and $1,199. For the more business minded, HP's also busted out a number of new laptops in its Compaq Presario line, including the 14.1-inch V3000 series, 15.4-inch V6000 series, the 17-inch 8710 and 8510 series, the 2710p convertible tablet, the 2510p ultralight and, last but not least, the 6910p, 6710, and 6510b "Balanced Mobility" models, which boast 14.1-inch and 15.4-inch displays. On the low-end, you'll be able to get a V6000 laptop starting at just $899, with starting prices going all the way up to $2,199 for the top-end 8510w model. As for availability, you can look for all the Pavilion laptops and the Compaq Presario 6910p, 6710, and 6510b to start rolling out immediately, with some more Presarios following in mid-July and the rest trickling out over the course of the summer.
HP set to release yet more Santa Rosa-based laptops
HP already has more than a few Santa Rosa-based laptops set for release, but it looks like the company isn't quite done with the platform just yet, with word of a half dozen more laptops coming out today. All of these fall under the Compaq moniker, and include model numbers 2510p, 6910p, 8510p, 8510w, 8710p, and 8710w. Specs-wise, this bundle pretty much runs the gamut, from the ultraportable 2500p with its 12.1-inch WXGA display and 2.8 pound carrying weight, to the desktop-replacing 8710w and 8710p, which each pack 17-inch displays, NVIDIA graphics, and Blu-ray drives as a option. All but the 2510p also pack Core 2 Duo processors ranging from the T7100 to the T7700, and boast integrated fingerprint scanners along with usual built-in WiFi and Bluetooth. As with HP's other Santa Rosa laptops, however, there's no word on pricing or availability, although that should be coming soon enough.
HP cooking Santa Rosa into Compaq 6510b and 6710b laptops
We've already seen the AMD versions of HP's new Compaq business laptops, the 6515b and 6715b, but now, thanks to a couple of leaked maintenance manuals, we've got word of Intel Santa Rosa versions of those two models: the 6510b and 6710b. Just like their AMD brethren, both models come with a WWAN option, and the main difference between the two is the 14.1-inch WXGA screen in the 6510b and 15.4-inch WXGA or WSXGA+ screens in the 6710b. Processors range from the 1.8GHz T7100 to the 2.4GHz T7700, and both stick to Intel GM965 integrated graphics. Both laptops can be specced pretty much any way you can imagine, and can come with anything from Vista Business to SuSe Linux pre-installed. HP picks Via processors for PCs in China
HP looks to be counting on Via to help it snag a bigger piece of the ever-expanding China market, with the company opting to use Via's low-power processors in a new Compaq-branded desktop intended for business use. At 1.5GHz, the processors of choice aren't exactly most powerful, but HP seems confident that the one-two punch of low-cost and energy efficiency will be enough to attract business in developing areas of the country. Exactly how cheap the desktops will be isn't clear, however, and there doesn't appear to be any word just yet on when they'll actually be available. They've certainly got their work cut out for them though, with Dell prepping its own low-cost PC for China, and plenty of the country's own companies already offering even cheaper systems.
HP busts out Compaq 6515b and 6715b laptops for the suits
A business laptop is a delicate balance of premium price, somewhat dated components, good connectivity, and boring enough looks to sneak into a meeting undetected. HP seems to have hit all those main points with its new Compaq business laptops. The 6515b and 6715b sport AMD processors, 80-160GB HDDs, XP Pro on up to Vista Business, EV-DO or HSDPA 3G connectivity, ATI X1250 graphics and 802.11n WiFi. There's room for the up to 4GB of RAM, and the standard selection of optical drives, including a DVD+/-RW SuperMulti drive with LightScribe, if you want to get all fancy. The 6515b goes for a 14.1-inch 1280 x 800 display and weighs 5.6 pounds, while the 6715b sports 15.4-inches of screen, though we're unsure of further specifics. Both laptops are available now, and luckily the last part of the traditional biz laptop equation rings untrue here: both start at a budget friendly $649.
Circuit City to sell $100 Compaq laptop on Black Friday
With all this talk about OLPC's mythical $100 laptop, it was only a matter of time before a more established brand-name company tried its hand at pulling off a similar trick without NickNeg and company. CNET reports that Circuit City will be selling a Compaq Presario model on Black Friday (that's the day after Thanksgiving, or November 24, for you non-Yanks) for $100, sorta. If you agree to get a Vonage subscription for a year and can handle the assorted rebates, then this lappy is yours for a Benjamin. That's not such a bad deal, considering it comes with a Celeron M 420 CPU, 15-inch screen, DVD and CD burner, 512MB RAM and a 60GB hard drive. Of course this isn't the first time that we've seen rebates drive down computer prices so much -- there was the HP setup that we saw over Labor Day, which included a CRT, and a burner for the same price after rebates too -- but a laptop is something to take stock of. HP Compaq's tc4400 tablet PC joins the Merom crowd
If you thought the bevy of Merom-based laptops coming at you had finally stalled, well, maybe it has -- but HP Compaq's tc4000 tablet PC has arrived (albeit fashionably late) with spec-bumped innards that include an Intel Core Duo 1.83GHz T5600 processor. Aside from the Merom boost, this convertible also packs 512MB of DDR2 RAM, a 12.1-inch XGA display, 5,400RPM 80GB hard drive, 56k modem, gigabit Ethernet, 802.11a/b/g, biometric fingerprint sensor, and a 6-cell battery. It comes fully prepared for that stylus abuse thanks to the included Windows XP Tablet Edition 2005, and sports the usual complement of ports: VGA out, S-Video out, microphone in, headphone jack, IR, and a trio of USB 2.0 connectors. If you've somehow held out on those Merom-powered laptops and just can't resist the allure of taking notes on an LCD, the tc4400 is available now for $1,479.[Via Laptoping]
