Windows 8 to bring better language support, finally including English
In addition to better file management, accessibility and that all important new logo, Redmond's engineers are also promising improved language support in Windows 8. So far, Microsoft admits it's seen this as a "local-market feature," putting the onus on non-English users to track down special copies of the OS or language packs online. But the new OS will bring a friendlier philosophy, in which multilingual support is regarded as a "feature for everyone everywhere" and the Control Panel becomes a "one-stop place" to find and install any of 109 different idioms. These will include 13 new interface packs, allowing commonly used Windows features to be displayed in Scottish Gaelic, Punjabi, Uyghur, Cherokee and other tongues listed at the source link. Lastly, there'll also be one entirely new display language: English for the United Kingdom, with Old World spellings and the eternal blessing of David Mitchell (after the break). [Thanks, Rahul]
MobileMe control panel for Windows helps with proxy servers
Yesterday, Apple released MobileMe Control Panel for Windows 1.4, recommended for users on corporate networks that use proxy servers. Some users were reporting errors when trying to sync contacts and calendars, or were unable to log into the MobileMe control panel at all. This update sorts that out. According to Apple technical note on the subject, supported proxy server types include: Web proxy servers (HTTP) Secure Web proxy (HTTPS) SOCKS proxy servers (see note below) HTTP/HTTPS proxy servers that require authentication Proxy bypass lists Proxy auto-configuration (PAC) files The update is available on the MobileMe website, and is also included with iTunes 8.2 for Windows.
Opus intros WCU600 Touchscreen Control Panel
If you're sick and tired of having to actually walk more than three steps in order to handle mundane tasks such as turning the volume down in the kids' room or powering up the Opus system in your den, take heart. Opus has unveiled a swank (albeit pricey) new touch panel control unit meant to give Opus system owners full control over their components throughout the house on a 3.5-inch touchscreen. The WCU600 even supports IR control from faraway, but unfortunately, it looks as if this one's tied into the Opus infrastructure only. Nevertheless, those with cash to burn and desires to satisfy can look for it to ship sometime this Spring for £575 ($1,151).[Via ShinyShiny]

Media Temple boasts iPhone friendly control panel
Media Temple, a well known hosting provider, has recently rolled out a beta version of their control panel made just for the iPhone. Judging from the number of folks who sent this to us (thanks to all of you!) there seems to be a large, and until now, untapped market of people who want to be able to register a domain from anywhere.Aside from registering domains you can also restart services, pay your bill, add email addresses, and submit a tech support ticket. I'm not a Media Temple customer myself, nor do I own an iPhone (and we all know how I feel about iPhone specific web apps) but I must admit this looks slick.
