One of the things I love most about CES is the array of fascinating gadgets I come across. I'm talking stuff that's not a smartphone or a laptop. Case in point: this portable, solar-powered oven. GoSun's Fusion electric stove has an integrated heating system that can heat up to 550 degrees Farenheit, making it capable of cooking a meal within 20 minutes, with only sunshine as fuel. The company says the Fusion is five times more efficient than a traditional oven, and claims it can cook food with the same amount of energy needed to power a lightbulb.

Luxury AGA ovens aren't safe from hackers

In the kitchen, nothing screams "I have money" like an AGA. The expensive British-made cast-iron stoves (or cookers, depending on where you're from) have barely changed in terms of looks much over the last century, but they have got smarter. Thanks to the company's iTotal Control technology, owners of certain models -- costing $10,000 and upwards -- have been able to switch their oven on and off via an app or by sending it a simple text message. It's no doubt helped them remotely prepare dinner, but a security flaw in the system has also left them open to mischievous third parties.

  • UTIII mod cooker finally released to the wild

We've been harping on about this Unreal Tournament III mod "cooker" for a wee while now. For those of you who don't know, this update for the Unreal Editor on PC allows mods to be exported to a PS3-friendly format, allowing any of the current and future PC mod releases to be saved out and used on the PlayStation 3. Epic released a few mods to tide us over while the "cooker" was still being tested. Soon after that, it was released to an undisclosed number of people on the Developer Mailing list, for further testing. Now, however, it's finally available for everyone to download. From here on out we expect to see a huge amount of user-generated content being released. But not all of it can be good, surely? We're aiming to bring you a round up of our favourite mods every couple of weeks or so. So if you're a mod maker, or if you've stumbled upon a mod you particularly enjoy, let us know at Jem [at] Joystiq.com.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

  • UTIII PS3 cooker released to a selection of mod developers

PSN@Home is reporting that Epic have finally released the Unreal Tournament III mod cooker to an unknown number of mod developers on the Developer mailing list. This is probably the last step in the testing stages and those who have received the update for the Unreal Editor have been asked not to release the cooking code. Mods for the PS3 version of UTIII will now, as a result, start to be released but not at the torrential rate that they will once the cooker is released publically.PSN@Home have also checked out the notes for what is and isn't supported in PS3 mods. Restrictions, thankfully, seem few. Mutators can only utilise UnrealScript, due to the the restrictions in the PS3's RAM capacity. Also, due to Unreal Tournament III using a proprietary audio encoder, sound effects cannot be added to the game. This is a shame but could be rectified in the future. If you are one of the lucky mod developers who received the cooking code and you have a mod to release for the PS3, let us know at Jem @ Joystiq dot com. Hot (ahem) on the heels of Matsushita's induction heating stove comes a similar contraption from Sanyo, but this one has a certain fondness for pressure cooking. The IH pressure rice cooker sports a copper lining that is reportedly sandwiched between layers of stainless steel and aluminum, which enables it to heat up quickly and retain a high degree of heat throughout the cooking process. Additionally, this device promises "even heating" that comes with the IH territory, comes in white / black (ECJ-XP10) or champagne gold (ECJ-V10), and will run you a staggering ¥131,250 ($1,076) when it lands in September.
