Renegade Kid's Kickstarter project for Cult County concluded today, failing to meet its lofty $580,000 goal. The Mutant Mudds and Dementium developer's Co-Founder Jools Watsham thanked the project's 1,492 backers via Twitter and a backers-only update on the page, who managed to raise $46,736 in one month, and acknowledged that Renegade Kid is "discussing other options" for the game moving forward. Set in a small west-Texas town, Cult County follows the story of Gavin Mellick across five episodes, a man that learns about a cult as he seeks his sister to deliver news about their ailing mother. The developer first revealed Cult County at PAX East in March 2013. Initially planned for 3DS, Renegade Kid expanded the game's scope to include versions for PC, Mac, Linux, Wii U, Xbox One, PS4, PS3 and Vita. Watsham said others suggested the developer should "reduce the [number] of platforms and budget for Cult County," but asserted that the "only way to reduce budget is to only make episode [one]." This is the "pre-pre-pre-alpha" video of Cult County, the spooky survival game from Dementium series developer Renegade Kid. Developer Jools Watsham walks viewers through the first look at gameplay for Cult County, making sure to note how the dust, wind and creepy messages painted across signs contribute to the atmosphere. In the game, you return to their childhood hometown in rural west Texas, only to find a new, cultish group has moved into town, Father Pearce has committed suicide, and a storm is rolling in. As the dust storm gathers, you begin to see shadowy figures on the edges of your vision. It's first-person with melee and firearm combat, though so far the main weapon we've seen is a big, red wrench. Renegade Kid is the studio behind Mutant Mudds and Moon, along with DS horror games Dementium and Dementium 2. It's looking for $580,000 on Kickstarter, and with 21 days left, it's raised $32,000. • Renegade Kid's Cult County mixes horror, FPS, story in a dust bowl

Cult County is a first-person survival horror game that takes cues from Telltale's The Walking Dead and horror classics such as Silent Hill and Resident Evil, according to developer Renegade Kid. That's the studio behind Mutant Mudds, Moon and the DS horror games, Dementium: The Ward and Dementium 2. Cult County takes place in a small west-Texas town: Gavin Mellick's mother is on her deathbed and he's unable to reach his sister by phone, so he drives six hours to tell her the news in person, just beating a dust storm to his late aunt's house. As the dust gathers, Gavin learns about a new cult in town and the suicide of Father Pearce, and he begins to see shadowy figures on the edge of his vision. The game features melee and firearm combat, and the town deteriorates the longer Gavin sticks around. "We have wanted to return to the survival horror genre for many years," Renegade Kid writes on its Kickstarter page. "And, our fans have told us the same thing! Many players have contacted us asking for Dementium 3. Without going into any icky details, certain contractual ties from the past make that impossible, unfortunately. So, instead of letting that hold us back, we decided to take matters into our own hands and develop a new survival horror experience with the same spirit." Renegade Kid's Kickstarter campaign seeks $580,000 to complete the game for PC, Mac, Linux, Wii U, Xbox One, PS4, PS3 and Vita. Cult County is already approved for Steam distribution, and it expects a development period of roughly one year. Renegade Kid is most recently known for the side-scroller Mutant Mudds, but initially came to prominence with Dementium and Moon, both first-person shooters for DS. The developer is returning to its handheld horror roots with Cult County, a new FPS for 3DS unveiled at PAX East. The developer posted some 3D images on its website, which you can see by going here with your 3DS browser, or using the QR code here. The page notes that these images are from an early "atmosphere" demo. The atmosphere is, it would appear, dusty.
