  • Robotic exoskeletons give dock workers superhuman lifting abilities

We talk a lot about robotic exoskeletons that give people almost supernatural lifting skills, but these tend to be confined to labs or science fiction. Not in South Korea, though. Daewoo has been testing suits that let shipyard workers carry objects as heavy as 66 pounds like they're nothing. The key is support for task-specific frames that put virtually all the load on the machine, giving you full dexterity -- whether it's an engine part or a piece of the hull, you can easily put it into place.

  • Daewoo introduces DIS-E100 HD IPTV set-top-box

It's pretty much impossible to say where Daewoo's DIS-E100 HD IPTV set-top-box (not pictured) is headed in terms of operator adoption, but one's thing is for certain: SecureMedia's Encryptonite ONE will be making sure no pirates can plunder with content running through it. In all honesty, little is actually known about the aforesaid STB given that it's SecureMedia that's doing the outing, but we wouldn't be shocked to see this filter out to the handful of IPTV providers operating in the States. Now, if only this thing had an HDD in it, we'd really be in business. Full release is after the break.

  • Daewoo DID-FS packs LCDs into folding screen

In a parting note from IFA, Daewoo unveiled this odd folding screen, featuring four integrated LCDs. Fully integrated into each of the wood panels, apparently the displays can show video from up to four sources, although there was otherwise little information from the booth staff about the DID-FS. Of course, where some might ask why would they build such a contraption, we see the perfect tool for a The Golden Child reenactment waiting to happen.[Via BornRich]

Daewoo Lucoms is no stranger to building smallish computers, but it seems to have taken a few obvious design cues from Intel's 2go PC when crafting its own Lukid. According to the firm's site, this kid-friendly PC includes a 900MHz Celeron M ULV processor, 512MB of DDR2 RAM, a 9-inch display, 30GB hard drive and Windows XP Home Edition. There's also two USB jacks, audio in / out, WiFi, Ethernet and a rather unsightly (though quite useful, we imagine) carry handle. Expect this one to land in South Korea for around ???549,000 ($531), though we haven't heard a peep in regard to availability elsewhere in the world.[Via AVING]

  • Daewoo shows off Blu-ray Profile 2 player at IFA

Straight from IFA 2007 in Berlin comes Daewoo's surprise entry into the Blu-ray camp with the company's first player, the DBP-1000. Interestingly, even though Daewoo is probably more well-known for their Trutech ODM devices -- or even their autos -- this player supposedly supports the full 2.0 Profile for Blu-ray Disc, including BD Live internet functionality, picture-in-picture, and local storage. Pricing and availability are nowhere to be found, but it won't be soon enough for Blu-ray fans to see players with that interactive functionality built-in like competing HD DVD players have. Another picture after the jump.

Daewoo is set to show their new DPC-8099PD-I portable DVD and iPod player at IFA on Friday. Should you care? Well, you might if you're in the market for a portable DVD player with full iPod integration and 8-inch LCD. You know, if Philips' gear just won't cut it. Specs include integrated stereo speakers and headphone jack; DVD/VCD/CD and CD-R/RW media support; MP3, JPG and DivX formats; and USB and multi-format memory card reader for slotting in additional media. No pricing or release information but we'll be sure to give her a spin while taking in the show later this week.

  • Daewoo's voice-recognizing microwave

Apparently being able to zap your meal in favor of kindling up a fire using sticks and lighter fluid just isn't efficient enough. If you'd prefer to maximize your couch time even more by not even mashing buttons on the face of your microwave, Daewoo's new device hears you loud and clear. Sporting a countertop design (as opposed to the "in-a-drawer" variety), brushed aluminum finish, and ironically enough, a full-fledged keypad, the voice recognition microwave recalls up to 40 cooking commands to get things fired up with just a shout. Niceties include its ability to react to anyone's voice (not just the programmer) as well as automatically determining the time required to properly heat / cook your food. Daewoo claims a "95 percent accuracy" rate on its automated determinations, so be sure not to scold it too fiercely when it torches your dinners the other 5 percent of the time.[Via OhGizmo]

  • Daewoo DBD-8000 Blu-ray Player...and recorder?

Looks like Daewoo was dropping more than nav systems at IFA earlier this month. Lit in a lovely pancreas green was this Daewoo DBD-8000 HD Video Recorder. What it records to we have no idea since there's nothing listed in the specs or printed on that bland chassis. But that ShowView EPG icon bottom-left means it definitely records to something. However, if it records to Blu-ray Disc then it certainly trumps the supposed Panny first from yesterday. For sure, it plays Blu-ray Discs and includes a built-in DVB-T TV tuner (for Europe), HDMI out, DV in, and additional support for DVD, VCD, CD, and MP3 or JPEG laden discs. Oh hey, is that a DivX logo on the front? Sho'nuff. No drop date or pricing so if you've got the 20 then by all means, let us know. More pics after the break.[Via HD Beat]

  • Daewoo announces DPN-3500 at IFA

So today's the first day of IFA, and that means that tons of companies are converging on the German capital to rain down gagdets onto the European populus. And not to be outdone by rival Gramin, Daewoo has announced three new navigation system: the DPN-3500, the DPN-5600 and the ANK-6160. We've got the most info on the DPN-3500, which according to Daewoo's Italian site, sports a 320 x 240 3.5-inch screen, 32MB of internal flash storage, and has 64MB of SDRAM and connects to the outside world with an SD / MMC card slot. You'll have to forgive us though, our Italian is a bit rusty, so when we read "SD Memory interna da 512 Mb," we're assuming that means it comes bundled with a 512MB SD card. But our Italian skills are good enough to tell you that it has a rechargeable battery, an optional remote control, and comes with standard Italian maps along with other maps, we're guessing for additional purchase. There's no mention in any language of how much the DPN-3500 will cost, nor of when it will be released. TechDigest also reports the announcement of the DPN-3500's two big cousins, the DPN-5600 and the ANK-6160, but we've been unable to find any more details on either of these in any language -- ma li terremo informati.[Via TechDigest]

  • Daewoo release their first large LCD TV - SummuS DLD-42C 1LMR

If you have a thing for matching brands, you might want to look at Doewoo's first LCD TV. The set has impressive stats with 5,000: contrast ratio, a 6-millisecond response time, PC input and the standard HDMI port. The LCD has a 720p resolution to prove even more that it is just another normal LCD. Back to that brand thing though, if you pick up this TV, it could match your Daewoo car, microwave (I have one), refrigerator and even your air conditioner. Talk about a brand penetration. There isn't any word on price or availablity yet, but even if there was, chances are the LCD is only going to be available in Korea.[via Akihabara News]

  • Daewoo releases SummuS DLD-42C1LMR LCD TV

Daewoo has released what appears to be its first LCD TV, the 42-inch SummuS DLD-42C1LMR. Spec-wise the set looks decent enough, with an impressive 5,000:1 contrast ratio, 6-millisecond response time, and HDMI input, although you'll have to settle for 1080i 720p resolution. The display also features Daewoo's MGDi PLUS engine, which promises to reduce noise and provide a "smoother" picture, as well as something that Google interprets as "TV/VCR/DVD/DSTB/mammary gland combinations," which, uh, would also be a first. No word on price but it looks like this one's only available in Korea.[Via Akihabara News]
