Activision is allegedly working on Dance Hero, say sources speaking to Kotaku. The site has also been informed that artists like Timbaland, Jay Sean, The Prodigy and Afrojack will be featured in the unannounced title. There are no further details on what platform the product will be on, leaving the door open to it being something controller-focused like Ubisoft's mega Just Dance franchise or Kinect-driven like Harmonix hit Dance Central. Heck, it could be both; Activision has the cash -- especially after recent unfortunate reductions. Also, depending on how current the information is, there's the slight possibility that the Dance Hero baby got thrown out with the Guitar Hero bathwater. Housekeeping for such a franchise was already done way back in 2008 when the publisher trademarked Dance Hero. Several years later, with the rise of the dance genre, it would seem the publisher is ready to hit the dance floor.

Now that getting innovation out of the rhythm music genre is like squeezing blood from a stone, Activision Blizzard has jumped to a new (old) pool of possible cash. According to 1UP, Actizzard has trademarked the title Dance Hero for "computer game software" development. Hey, it makes sense. After all, Guitar Hero was the North American equivalent to Konami's Guitar Freaks and considering Dance Dance Revolution is still a cash cow for the Japanese giant who'da thought it would take this long for a clone?According to our sister site Joystiq, the trademark filing showed up around the same time a rumor cited DJ Hero, a title reserved by Activision in February, is already in production. True or not we'd like to think Activision is only stockpiling trademarks and not actually ever use most of them. If half the titles they register turn into games we're going to have to buy up Facepalm Hero just to showcase how annoyed we are.

We know that the rhythm genre's communal idea well has been dry for quite some time now, but we find it hard to get behind Activision Blizzard's recent decision to trademark the title Dance Hero for "computer game software" development. Not only is it grammatically disturbing (shouldn't it be Dancing Hero, or rather, the Hero of Dance), but judging solely by the trademarked moniker, we think their new project may be an answer to Konami's Dance Dance Revolution series. There are just so few arcades remaining -- we'd rather not share them with a new generation of button-stompers.The trademark filing appeared around the same time as the rumors that DJ Hero, a title reserved by Activision in February, is actually in production. We'll be anxious to see if Dance Hero follows the same path (assuming the DJ Hero rumors prove true), or if it will join Drum Villain and Guitar Villain in the filing cabinet located within the basement of Activision Blizzard's Santa Monica headquarters. You know, the cabinet labeled "unusable, awful ideas".
