Dead Island: Riptide's "Rigor Mortis Edition" has everything you need to survive a zombie invasion: a small suitcase, a zombie hula girl figurine, a bottle opener that looks like a hand, and a key. Everything! There's also a "digital strategy map" and bundled DLC for the game. The contents of the $80 collection were chosen by a fan survey.According to Deep Silver, the Rigor Mortis Edition is available for pre-order now in North and Latin America in "extremely limited" quantities. There are only so many tiny magnetic zombies out there to provide source material for those bottle openers, after all.

Ah, the steady march of time. Just as the electronic transition frequency of an atom can be used to measure the passage of time, so too can the frequency with which money is electronically transitioned out of bank accounts during Valve's Steam Holiday Sale.Today's offerings, which last for the next 45 hours or so, include Dead Island for $6.79, Dungeon Defenders for $3.74, the DOTA 2 Early Access Pack for $15, Train Simulator 2013 for $13.74, 50 to 75 percent off Blood Bowl games and a massive Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War franchise collection for $10.Unfortunately, RailDriver's insane Desktop Train Cab Controller is not on sale, but take it from us, dressing the part goes a long way in creating the illusion of realism. Especially when you're simulating trains on public transit.

The Halo 4 Spartan Ops episodes don't just magically appear; they're painstakingly crafted by Axis Animation, the same studio that created that memorable, heartbreaking trailer for Dead Island in 2011. Take a peek at the process in the above video.

Techland today announced 'Project Hell', the codename for a new game the studio is developing. The developer launched a new blog for the project, revealing the game's prototype was borne out of an internally-created weapon mod for Dead Island.Although there isn't much yet to go on, it looks like Project Hell, as the name suggests, won't stray far from Dead Island's bloodied roots. The team's opening post says that they prefer "breaking through hordes of undead minions" over stuff with "unicorns and fairies." The post also notes the game will use some of Dead Island's technology. The announcement follows the news earlier this month that Dead Island shipped 4 million copies worldwide. Techland is also working on the next installment in that series, Riptide, which is reportedly set to debut at PAX Prime this weekend.

  • Dead Island: Riptide producer hopes game releases in Germany, but isn't betting on it

Dead Island: Riptide, like its predecessor, is unlikely to be released in Germany. The situation is awkwardly laughable, since the game is being shown at behind-closed-door sessions at Gamescom in Germany, but the audience in attendance won't likely get to legally play the game. Pouring lemon juice on the paper cut, publisher Deep Silver is a German company."Maybe they change the laws? It's about time," said Sebastian Reichert, creative producer of Riptide, expressing it's a little awkward being German and most people don't know his game. "I wouldn't bet on it [coming out here]."The Unterhaltungssoftware Selbskontrolle (USK) must follow government-enforced rules determined by the BPjM (German Federal Department for Media Harmful to Young Persons). Games can't have extreme violence against human-like enemies, along with many other criteria. Dead Island: Riptide has not yet been submitted to the USK.

  • Dead Island's lifeblood was co-op, 4 million units shipped

Dead Island's success was all due to that stunning trailer, right? Well, according to Guido Eickmeyer, development director and executive producer of games at publisher Deep Silver, the resort-vacation zombie simulator sold 4 million units because of its cooperative gameplay."This is why we got all the good reviews from users. This is why we got high user ratings, because it is the most exciting co-op experience that is on the market," Eickmeyer said.Despite investing less than $25 million dollars in the project – low for a major triple-A video game – Dead Island has been played for 56,907,547 hours in co-op, which is approximately 6,500 years total. After the success of the trailer, there were talks of forming the game around that, but there simply weren't the resources. Dead Island showed strong potential in its co-op, so the focus shifted to that and that game was a huge hit. Dead Island: Riptide is another "huge co-op experience" being revealed this week at Gamescom.

  • Techland files trademark for 'Dead Stop'

Techland, the developer responsible for bringing Dead Island into the world, has filed to register a trademark for something called "Dead Stop," which we're almost nearly entirely positive has something to do with video games and dead stuff. The application itself registers the trademark under a lot of the same goods and services classifications as the Dead Island trademark, with one important difference. While the Dead Island trademark covers use for video games and a myriad of merchandising options, "Dead Stop" is also listed under the code "IC 041. US 100 101 107," which specifically applies to online applications on mobile phones and portables, as well as websites "featuring entertainment information in the fields of electronic game programs, electronic game products, and electronic game programs and products."Until there's an official announcement of some kind, what "Dead Stop" actually is remains to be seen. Who knows, maybe it's a zombie telegraph simulator? "WE PROMISE WE ARE NOT DEAD, STOP. PLEASE RESPOND ASAP WITH BRAIN WEIGHTS AND MEASUREMENTS, STOP."

  • Steam Summer Sale, Day 3: Skyrim, Dead Island, Borderlands and more

For those of us with poor self-control and a PC, the Steam Summer Sale is as fiscally dangerous as it is deeply satisfying. So far, the Joystiq Qrew has spent about four hundred thousand collective dollars on Genesis ports alone, so when if we suddenly go offline, that means we spent the last of the server budget on Ecco the Dolphin.Anyway, today's deals include Skyrim for $29.79, Dead Island (one copy for $10.19 or four copies for $30.58), Borderlands for five damn dollars (or $14.98 for a four-pack), as well as a third Indie Bundle and even more. There will also be flash sales throughout the day, so be sure and obsessively refresh Steam every 48 seconds or so until the Summer Sale ends on July 22.

  • 'Dead Island: Game of the Year Edition' rated in UK

The British Board of Film Classification brings word of a Dead Island: Game of the Year Edition, scratching a June 30 launch date onto the calendar. Contents of the GOTY edition aren't mentioned, but since these things usually include previously released DLC, expect "Ryder White," "Bloodbath Arena" and possibly "The Ripper."The listing was noticed by Siliconera, which grabbed a photo of the horrific rating before it was burned off the internets. When contacted for comment, a representative for publisher Deep Silver simply groaned, went back to eating her fresh tartare and shambled away. Love it or hate it – if you've played Dead Island you certainly have an opinion – but latest sales figures peg Dead Island at over three million units shipped worldwide.

It's been a crazy week at GDC, and though I've already gotten the skinny on both PlanetSide 2 and DUST 514, there's more on the way when it comes to online shooter news. Yesterday morning I headed over to the Hi-Rez Studios booth on the main show floor, where COO Todd Harris had some exciting news to share with fans of the firm's Tribes: Ascend title. The free-to-play shooter will officially launch on April 12th, and Hi-Rez has also released a new parody trailer that pays homage to Dead Island and shows off the perils of the dreaded "llama capture" (if you're a Tribes newb, just know that speed equals survival when it comes to flag-grabs). Join me after the cut for some Tribes-related chit-chat as well news of new content on the way for Global Agenda.

Upcoming Dead Island DLC will let you experience the island paradise from the perspective of one of the bad guys. No, not a zombie -- the next DLC, coming January 31, focuses on human antagonist Ryder White. We're sure zombies will still be around. You'll learn why he became such an unpleasant character in "several hours" of new story mode content, and you'll also find two new blueprints for new weapon mods. The North American release hits on January 31 for 800 MSP/$9.99. The European release is set for February 1 for £7.99.%Gallery-144809%

  • Dead Island ships three million worldwide

Despite a fair share of problems, Dead Island has apparently done quite well for Deep Silver after debuting in September and snagging a top spot in the NPD charts. Last we heard, Dead Island shipped one million units to retail in North America in its first week and was expected to ship two million units worldwide by week's end. Aubrey Norris, Deep Silver's manager of marketing and PR, has revealed to Game Informer that Dead Island has shipped three million units worldwide. "Dead Island has sold very, very well over the holiday season and we are thrilled that it has sustained a robust level of sell-through since launch in September," she said. Norris didn't divulge any sell-through numbers -- a much better indicator of the game's overall success.

Ubiquitous disc kiosk dispensary Redbox has shared its top game rentals of 2011, with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 for Xbox 360 commanding the top spot. It's no surprise that Modern Warfare 3, which earned $775 million at retail in a week, would also find itself again in fifth place with the PS3 version. It was, like, the biggest game launch ever. Ubisoft has two members of its successful Just Dance franchise on the Redbox list, with Just Dance 3 and Smurfs Dance Party in fifth and seventh spots, respectively. Surprise summer hit Dead Island rounds out the top three. The game's rocky launch may have scared off some purchases, but that didn't stop Deep Silver (and Square Enix) from shipping millions of copies of the game. This was Redbox's first "official" year of game rentals, expanding its test market of 5,000 last year to nearly 27,000 kiosks nationwide over the summer. Check out the full top ten after the break.

Investing in ostentatious sword-arms is a lot easier today, with Steam chopping 50 percent off the price of Deus Ex: Human Revolution in its Autumn Sale. That lowers it to $24.99, alongside The Missing Link DLC -- also discounted to $7.49. Dead Island receives its own dramatic reversal in price ($24.99), as does Telltale's Back to the Future series ($9.99). The Serious Sam HD double pack is quite the temptation at $2.99, but we've vowed to do something more constructive this weekend. Why not administer intravenous therapy to an ailing patrician for $6.79?

  • Dead Island adds 'Bloodbath Arena' DLC on Nov. 22

While "Bloodbath Arena" remains an effective caption for the gruesome state of Dead Island, it's also a specific add-on coming to PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on November 22. The DLC was delayed for a short stint after developer Techland decided to spend more time polishing the main game -- a process which was still ongoing with the release of last week's major console patch. Bloodbath Arena is free to customers who pre-ordered the Special Edition game, and costs $10 or 800 MS Points for everyone else. It offers four new arenas for single-player or co-op play, and challenges participants to execute and outlive multiple waves of zombies. So, it's a survival mode in which you face off against a constantly replenished force of snarling enemies. You could call it "Mob Mode" or something like "Enough Enemies to Warrant a Collective Noun Mode."
