Already preparing your popcorn for Dead Rising: Watchtower? Well don't do that; the video game-inspired film will first hit Crackle on March 27, your snack certainly won't last that long. We suppose you can still eat it while watching the film's trailer right here.

Dead Rising: Watchtower, the Crackle-exclusive adaptation of Capcom's over-the-top zombie survival franchise Dead Rising, now has a release date: March 27. Scant plot information on Watchtower is available, though comedian Rob Riggle has been cast as photojournalist Frank West, suggesting that the film could be linked to either of the two games that feature West as protagonist. Beyond Riggle, the cast includes Meghan Ory (Once Upon A Time), Jesse Metcalfe (Dallas, Desperate Housewives) and Virginia Madsen (Candyman, Sideways). According to Crackle parent company Sony, following its initial debut on the streaming video platform, Dead Rising: Watchtower will also appear on DVD, TV and video on demand services. Frank West, Capcom's favorite zombie-killing photojournalist, will be portrayed by former Daily Show correspondent Rob Riggle in Legendary's live-action Dead Rising: Watchtower film. "But he's a comedian," we hear you shout. "What does he know about jamming a Servbot helmet on the undead?" Granted, Riggle's not the most obvious choice, but he does have the right lantern-jawed look for the character and Riggle's one of the few candidates who can say that he, like his video game counterpart, has actually covered wars. As for what he'll be doing in Dead Rising: Watchtower, that remains unknown. Legendary's vague synopsis claims the film focuses on the survivors of a zombie outbreak who begin to suspect government involvement. That should be familiar ground for anyone who's played a Dead Rising entry, but does nothing to differentiate the film from its source material. So far there's no release date for Dead Rising: Watchtower, but it will debut exclusively on the Crackle digital video network. [Image: Capcom]

  • Dead Rising film director: It's 'Indiana Jones with zombies'

The Dead Rising digital film in production under Legendary Digital Media has an original storyline with new heroes and a new city, set between Dead Rising 2 and Dead Rising 3, director Zach Lipovsky tells SlashFilm. There will be "familiar faces," too, Lipovsky says, before teasing original Dead Rising protagonist Frank West: "I can't reveal too much, but the character has covered wars, you know." Lipovsky describes the tone of the film as "Indiana Jones with zombies." He wants to recreate the series' massive hordes, even with a smaller, straight-to-digital film budget. "Pretty much every person I know has already emailed me saying they want to be a zombie, so I think we'll be fine," Lipovsky says. "We are also planning a long one-take action shot with hundreds of zombies, which I'm very excited about .... Online there is no ratings board, there is no run time limit, there are no rules. This is an experiment for Legendary, and they have been incredibly willing to take creative risks." The film, dubbed Dead Rising: Watchtower, will be one 90-minute movie on Sony's streaming service, Crackle, but it will be episodic on other platforms, Lipovsky says. See the cast list below.

Zach Lipovsky has been tapped to direct the straight-to-Crackle Dead Rising movie adaptation we mentioned a few months back, according to The Wrap. If the name doesn't ring any bells for you, don't worry, it shouldn't. Lipovsky began his Hollywood career as a child actor before moving into visual effects. It's only recently that Lipovsky has segued into the director's chair and the vast majority of his work to date has been in TV movies. His most notable credit is Leprechaun: Origins, a recent reboot of the cult-classic Leprechaun horror franchise starring Dylan Postl, a diminutive professional wrestler better known to fans of the WWE as "Hornswoggle." While Lipovsky's IMDB listing doesn't offer much hope for the Dead Rising adaptation, the film is being produced by Contradiction Films, the same people responsible for the surprisingly good Mortal Kombat: Legacy web series. Hopefully, the positive karma from that project carries over to Capcom's timeless tale of survival among hordes of the hungry dead. [Image: Capcom]

  • Deals With Gold: Dead Rising 3, Ryse permanently discounted

This week's Xbox Live Deals With Gold sale bring permanent discounts to the Xbox One's "top titles," while Capcom takes a hatchet to the prices of its various downloadable offerings on the Xbox 360. From August 6 onward, Dead Rising 3, Ryse: Son of Rome, Forza Motorsport 5 and Kinect Sports Rivals will be priced at $50 - a $10 discount off of each game's launch price. According to Microsoft, this new price is universal, so you'll be able to pick up any of these games either at retail or through the Xbox One's digital store at the new $50 price point. Capcom's discounts are much more impressive, as every game and DLC listed has been reduced in price by at least 50 percent. Highlights include Dead Rising 2: Off the Record for less than $7, Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara at $5.09 and the phenomenal Street Fighter 3: Third Strike Online Edition for only $3.74. Legendary Digital Media plans to produce a feature-length film based on Capcom's Dead Rising series, Variety reported. The movie will stream via Sony's Crackle channel, an app available via many game consoles and devices. Lorenzo di Bonaventura, producer of the Transformers films, will serve as Dead Rising's executive producer with Tomas Harlan of Contradiction Films, which previously created the Mortal Kombat: Legacy digital series. A director for the film has not been decided yet. Following the film's run on Crackle, it will be distributed internationally by Content Media via DVD, video on demand, subscription video on demand and TV. Capcom's zombie-slashing Dead Rising series spans three primary games in addition to a Wii remake of the first game (Chop Till You Drop), reimagining of the second (Off the Record), mobile spin-off and a few separate downloadable titles in Dead Rising 2: Case Zero and Case West. The latest was Dead Rising 3, which launched with the Xbox One in November. The game will reach PC this September. [Image: Capcom]

  • Street Fighter producer Yoshinori Ono leaves Capcom Vancouver [update]

In a surprising move, Yoshinori Ono, a longtime Capcom fixture best known for his work as producer of the Street Fighter 4 line of fighting games, has announced his departure from Capcom Vancouver. "I resigned from the director position about Capcom Vancouver. Thanks good staff of Capcom Vancouver, and Dead Rising staff," Ono tweeted earlier today. "I had take some time, I think over very carefully about next things. I'd like to watch TV for Brazil World Cup before thinking it!" he later added. Though he plainly states that he's left Capcom Vancouver, it's unclear what future Ono might have in Capcom's larger corporate umbrella. As EventHubs points out, Ono was promoted to the rank of corporate officer at Capcom Japan in April, and as far as anyone knows, he has not resigned from that role. We've attempted to pry more information from Capcom itself, though the company offered only a boilerplate "no comment." Update: Yoshinori Ono has offered further clarification on his future plans via Twitter. "My position within Capcom has not changed and I'm still involved in all of the projects that I'm currently working on," Ono stated, before adding, "Only my role for Capcom Vancouver has ended."

  • Dead Rising Collection hits European Xbox 360s in March

Europe is getting a Dead Rising Collection for Xbox 360 on March 7, bundling up the original Dead Rising, Dead Rising 2, and the Case Zero, Case West and Off the Record DLC missions. Capcom hasn't said if the collection will make its way to North America. Check out the (zombie-)full box art below. Dead Rising 3 on Xbox One shipped 1 million units by the close of 2013, pushing the series' shipment total to 7 million, Capcom announced yesterday. Operation Broken Eagle, the first bit of DLC for Dead Rising 3, is available now for $10 or part of the $30 season pass.

  • Dead Rising 3 includes Mega Man gear, if you can earn it

By now it has become series tradition, so it's little surprise to learn that Dead Rising 3 allows players to equip items straight out of Mega Man X. Slightly more surprising are the lengths you'll need to go to in order to earn your Mega Man X costume and Mega Buster weapon. In previous Dead Rising entries, most of the Mega Man-themed equipment could be found by raiding the right stores, but Dead Rising 3 demands players complete the game twice to earn the full ensemble. Once to earn the costume, then again on Nightmare Mode (which reinstates the classic Dead Rising time limit) to earn the Mega Buster. That may seem like a lot of effort for fan service, but if past Dead Rising games are any indication, the Mega Buster should be an obscenely over-powered weapon that destroys zombies (and most boss characters) in a single shot.

Dead Rising 3 hosting city Los Perdidos has a lot of inhabitants, but they aren't all on the same page. Capcom has revealed DLC plans for Dead Rising 3, including word that four big additions are planned for the game as well as a discounted season pass. There's scant information on these additions, beyond word that each will include "new playable characters, missions, weapons, and more," but Capcom has revealed each DLC pack's title. First up is "Operation Broken Eagle," which will be followed by "Fallen Angel," "Chaos Rising" and "The Last Agent." It's unknown when this DLC will be released, but Capcom has revealed that each pack will be priced at $10. Those who purchase the season pass will receive all of this DLC plus an exclusive "Nick Ramos Tribute Pack," which includes a new car and costume for the Dead Rising 3 protagonist, for $30. In case your eyes glazed over at the sight of dollar signs, Capcom has also issued a new trailer for the game, which you can find above. It's Halloween-themed, or at least that's the excuse presented for why the main character is dressed as a shark while obliterating former people. The Xbox One-exclusive Dead Rising 3 debuts on November 22.

As if all the weird stuff we already knew about in Dead Rising 2: Off the Record wasn't enough, Capcom has even more to reveal at PAX this weekend. The company is showing off the game's Sandbox mode, which will let players run around Fortune City and cause as much mayhem as wanted "without having to worry about the clock." The mode also offers a series of challenges in each of the game's environments (ranging from simple collection to killing zombies or driving around in vehicles) that will offer up cash as a reward. We've got a couple of Joystiq folks on the show floor at PAX, so stay tuned for a hands-on report about the mode itself.

  • Inafune on defeating Capcom's sequel-heavy budgeting

    by

    05.09.2011

In one anecdote, former Capcom exec Keiji Inafune illustrates how he got so high up in the company and the kind of behavior that likely led to his hasty exit. During a presentation at Kyoto's Ritsumeikan University, the Neptunia Mk-II weapon dished on the corporate culture at Capcom, and how he gamed it to get Lost Planet and Dead Rising made. Before those games, he said, Capcom had a rule requiring 70-80 percent of the games produced at the company to be sequels, and the management rejected pitches for new titles even beyond that proportion. Inafune started up two new projects, Lost Planet and Dead Rising, and just kept them going even after the prototypes were rejected. Eventually, he exceeded the budget for Lost Planet's prototype by 400%, figuring that Capcom wouldn't cancel it if the game was half done. The strategy worked: both titles made it to retail, and started franchises that have sold over four million units each. Inafune was already well known for a successful act of guerrilla game-making. After Mega Man, his team was famously only allowed to develop Mega Man 2 if they did so on their own time, without affecting the schedules of other projects.

Capcom is offering its newly-launched Dead Rising Mobile, a portable adaptation of the original Dead Rising, at a special introductory price of $4.99. Herein lies the rub, though: it's only compatible with iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and third-generation or newer iPod Touch right now. The first update will include iPad support, but Capcom's being mum on when that'll be available. %Gallery-110230%

  • Dead Rising 2 ships 2 million, Blue Castle Games renamed

    by

Capcom announced this morning that Dead Rising 2 has shipped over two million units globally, making it more successful than the original zombie survival sandbox. The company also stated that the Dead Rising franchise has shipped over four million units globally. That math likely entails the couple million copies from the sequel, the "million-plus" from the original Dead Rising, and ... oh boy, whatever Dead Rising: Chop Till you Drop shipped. It's unclear if Capcom's "most dynamic sales weapon" ever, Dead Rising 2: Case Zero, would be included in there -- considering it didn't "ship" so much as "sell" half a million units on Xbox Live Arcade. The publisher also announced that its acquisition of Blue Castle Games was approved by Canadian authorities. The studio will now be known as Capcom Game Studio Vancouver. Will CGSV be entrusted with other Capcom franchises, or will it remain in the company of the living dead?

You can also get Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth or Mega Man Zero Collection on DS for $20, or the Platinum Hits version of Dead Rising on Xbox 360 for an amazing $11.64. Should you decide to purchase Lost Planet 2 for some reason, Amazon isn't judging. The retailer is offering that game on both PS3 and Xbox 360 for $20.
