Square Enix is continuing its late support for Vita with new ports of two of its more popular mobile games. Rise of Mana and Deadman's Cross, both free-to-play, make their debuts on the Sony handheld this winter in Japan. Western readers may already be familiar with the unusual hybrid that is Deadman's Cross. The sequel to Guardian's Cross combines zombie first-person shooting with card battles, and that formula's helped it chomp into 4 million downloads worldwide. Though the Vita port's only been announced for Japan, Square Enix did bring the iOS and Android game to North America and Europe last year.

Card game / first-person shooter Deadman's Cross is about to get even more deader, thanks to an injection of Resident Evil's particular brand of horror. From now until July 27, players will be able to access Raccoon City as a special hunt area, where they'll be able to take down and collect some of Resident Evil's most iconic monstrosities. These include the Tyrant, gross zombie dogs, chainsaw dude from Resident Evil 4 and, of course, Nemesis. Also, lest Resident Evil's Lickers give you the wrong idea, remember to never lick your mobile device. Deadman's Cross is available now on the App Store and Google Play. [Image: Square Enix]

Square Enix has struck gold in the free-to-play, mobile gaming market with Deadman's Cross, a roleplaying game where players battle hordes of the undead using their wits and a lethal deck of cards. A semi-sequel to the similarly free-to-play Guardian Cross, Deadman's Cross has been downloaded over three million times since its debut this past winter. To celebrate, the publisher has unveiled a "Triple Platinum" celebration, during which players will receive a bonus of 300 Deadman coins and the chance to earn special "Gold-Plated Boost Items." The celebration runs from May 27 to June 1, and while those bonus coins are a one-time offer, players will be granted a new chance at those Gold-Plated Boost Items each day until the festivities draw to a close. If this has suddenly piqued your interest in the game, you can download your own copy of Deadman's Cross via the iTunes App Store or Google Play. As with all free-to-play games, it won't cost a dime to acquire the game, though Square Enix would be delighted if you'd spend real cash on the numerous in-game purchases available to virtual zombie hunters. To celebrate the milestone of free-to-play mobile game Deadman's Cross being downloaded more than one million times, Square Enix is giving away extra in-game currency through February 28 to all players who download and register the game. Deadman's Cross, which launched earlier this month, is a first-person shooter with card-based RPG elements set in the year 2030. Zombies have arisen and are doing what zombies do: snacking on us tasty humans. Players must navigate the abandoned streets of New Livingston (puns!) with only a high-powered rifle and a deck of cards in search of the apocalypse's cause. Killing zombies (or "deadmen," as they're called in the game) adds them to your deck of cards, though the game is also supported by micro-transactions if your earned cards just aren't getting the job done. Deadman's Cross is the spiritual successor to Guardian Cross, a similar free-to-play card game where players capture and battle wild beasts. [Image: Square Enix]

This winter Square Enix will debut Deadman's Cross, a free-to-play, mobile sequel to the recently-released Guardian Cross. While Guardian Cross features fantasy characters and a top-down perspective, Deadman's Cross is set in the midst of the zombie apocalypse. Dubbed "Deadmen," these shambling corpses have taken over the world, and its up to you to hunt them down using a rifle, a deck of cards and a new first-person perspective. Killing Deadmen will add them to your deck allowing you to use them in future battles, though if Guardian Cross is any indicator, players will also be able to bolster their decks through the game's wide selection of microtransactions. Deadman's Cross is slated for release on both Android and iOS platforms at some point this winter. Square Enix has promised a trailer for the game at this year's Tokyo Game Show and we expect more comprehensive details on Deadman's Cross to emerge at that point.
