digg_url = 'http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/12/review-demons-souls/'; Demon's Souls is not your friend, nor does it want or try to be. Your relationship is on its terms and you can love it or leave it. From Software's dungeon crawler comes from some sick, demented alternate plane of existence, where arcades are thriving and popping quarters into your console is how publisher Atlus recoups the costs of the game. It's a reality where Diablo was a tremendous flop because gamers have accepted masochism as the only measure for a game's quality. Demon's Souls is your leather-clad mistress and -- the worst part -- if you can withstand the pain for almost eight hours, you may, in what can only be described as a horrifying epiphany ... begin to enjoy it. %Gallery-34304%

Are you an Atlus devotee who somehow snagged an early copy of this Tuesday's release of Demon's Souls for the PS3? If you do happen to be one of these folks, you might want to head over to the medicine cabinet and grab a chill pill, as Atlus says that nothing is wrong with the lack of connectivity to its North American servers, they just haven't been turned on yet. Specifically, Atlus says, "What this means is that users that might manage to pick the game up early and start it up will get an immediate PSN error and have to start playing offline." Sure, you could shed a few tears and swear off the publisher forever, but look at it this way -- now you'll have two secret days of soul collecting to rub in your friends faces when the servers go live this Tuesday. Hooray!%Gallery-33504%

Atlus isn't exactly known for big-budget epics, but that's exactly what Demon's Souls feels like in this latest trailer. From Software's hardcore RPG touts some rather unique online connectivity, and this trailer teases the functionality, along with a bevvy of overwhelming praise from various media outlets. Why no quotes from us, Atlus? Oh, that's why.

  • Demon's Souls' unique online mode explained

The online mode in Demon's Souls differs significantly from the online modes in most games. One tiny difference, for example: you don't actually play with other people most of the time. You know, little details like that.Atlus's latest Demon's Souls blog post describes the inventive online mode, which shows other players in their own single-player games as "shades, non-corporeal entities fading in and out of your plane of existence." The only time players can actively assist other people is when dead, as "spirits." Spirits can interact with other players in order to regain their lives, either by helping to defeat a boss, or by ... killing the other player and stealing their life.Players can also see the deaths of other players by examining bloodstains left at the locations where people have died, and can read messages left for one another.

  • Demon's Souls wanders without European publisher

It was surprising to see Demon's Souls announced for US release. The hardcore dungeon-crawling RPG is guaranteed not to sell much, thanks to its emphasis on old-school gameplay. Regardless, it has its niche, and we're certain there are many that want to play it.Unfortunately, Demon's Souls is without a publisher in Europe. Sony Computer Entertainment publishes it as a first-party title in Japan and Asia, but opted to not pursue a worldwide release. The American rights were picked up by Atlus, a company that has no official presence in Europe. Sony told Eurogamer it had "no plans to publish [Demon's Souls] in Europe at present". Koei and Ubisoft, publishing partners of Atlus and From Software, also commented that there are "no plans," or are unaware of any plans, to bring the game to the European audience. While a publisher may be announced in the future, it seems as though Europeans may have to rely on PS3's region free capabilities and import Demon's Souls when it releases in America later this year.%Gallery-33504%[Thanks, Jake!]

  • Demon's Souls: North American date, deluxe edition detailed

Atlus has announced that From Software's PlayStation 3 action-RPG, Demon's Souls, will be released in North America on October 6. Of course, Atlus is throwing extra stuff into the package, in this case an art book, for pre-ordering. But it is also going beyond its usual Atlus Spoils content and offering a "deluxe edition," with a 150-page strategy guide and a fancy slipcover for $69.99. According to Atlus, pre-orders for both versions will begin on July 8. Giving away extra stuff seems like a smart way to entice a repeat purchase out of the many Demon's Souls players who already imported the English-language Asian edition of the game.%Gallery-33504%

It may be a first-party title in Japan, but Demon's Souls is coming to America courtesy of Atlus. This "spiritual successor" to King's Field got a mixed response from Japanese critics: some loved the nostalgic gameplay, while others found the brutal difficulty a bit too oppressive. One of Demon's Souls greatest features is its online connectivity. Players will be able to leave hints for each other, "replay death scenes", cooperatively revive dead players, or invade other player's games to "wreak havoc." Hope your friends aren't jerks.Atlus plans on providing "updates" at E3 later this year, so stay tuned for more. Check out the Japanese trailer after the break.%Gallery-33504%[Thanks, David B.!]

  • Tales of the World, Demon's Souls take top spots in Japanese charts

The Japanese software charts for the week ending February 8 don't just feature one PlayStation game at the top of the list, but four. It's a grand slam victory for Sony as titles for all of its current systems (PSP, PS3 and PS2) occupy the top four slots. Those titles happen to be two RPGs and two soccer games. 1. Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology 2 (PSP) - 45,000 units sold 2. Demon's Souls (PS3) - 40,000 3. Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 (PSP) - 38,000 4. Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 (PS2) - 37,000 There was one other PlayStation title that made the top-ten list, though it only came up at number seven. Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G, Japan's most popular PSP game, took the honors. It seems that game has a permanent spot on the charts, as it has dominated in sales for the majority of last year. It shouldn't come as much of a surprise to hear that it has just recently broken the three-million barrier.

Demon's Souls was a surprise PS3 game revealed at Tokyo Game Show. From Software, the makers of the Armored Core series is working on this brand new action game. This trailer is three minutes long, and gives us a good idea for the game's mood. However, we want to see more gameplay footage. We're not getting too hyped over this game, so we'd like to see more footage. [Thanks, Christian H.!]

Demon's Souls is one of the games for the PS3 that have been unveiled as playable at Tokyo Game Show. When we first reported on the game we included some Famitsu scans for your viewing pleasure, but now we have actual information on the game as well.Demon's Souls will be released some time in 2009 and it is a spiritual successor to King's Field, a PS1 title that was never officially released in the US. The game takes place in the kingdom of Boletaria, where you play an unnamed protagonist who roams around in an "extremely open-ended" world -- you can choose to save the world from the king who will awaken "an ancient monster" in his sleep, or not. It's all up to you.The game's director, Hidetaka Miyazaki, is attempting to "make the fun and charms of a classic RPG interesting all over again with the latest technology at hand." For example, instead of placing traditional restrictions on item usage, it uses the game's physics to place more realistic limits such as "long weapons bump into walls, lighting the area in real-time with the torch in your hand." Sadly, the director appears to have implied the game will be lacking multiplayer; instead, he will opt to "find a way to use the Internet to make the single-player mode more interesting." Arguably, there has yet to be a game that mixes mechanics of a good ol' RPG with gameplay elements only possible on this generation's hardware. Will Demon's Souls be the first? We'll find out when we check the game out at TGS. Also, be sure to check out the 11 screenshots in the gallery below.Source -- Official websiteSource -- 1UP[Thanks, Ether02 and DeforMAKulizer!]%Gallery-33504%

The latest Famitsu has some info on one of those nine unannounced PS3 games coming from Sony and to be shown off at TGS next week. Demon's Souls is a single-player, fantasy-themed action-RPG being developed by From Software (and directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki, of Armored Core fame), and published by SCEJ. Though it's a new IP, the game's director and SCE producer mention From Software's RPG series King's Field – perhaps a spiritual successor of some kind? Demon's Souls will be playable at TGS, so we'll find out then, okay?[Via PS3 Fanboy]

Remember yesterday and that pretty huge list of unannounced Sony games? Yeah, we're starting to learn what some of them are. This one -- seen in Japanese magazine Weekly Famitsu -- is called Demon's Souls. It's an action-RPG made by From Software. Those guys are the developers of the Armored Core series and also King's Field. While their new title for the PS3 looks strikingly a lot like Shadow of the Colossus (or at least it does in its most captivating picture), the game isn't going to be exclusive to giant slaying. The game will be at Tokyo Game Show -- which is less than two weeks away.[Thanks Hanson Y.!]
