  • Addonics intros two eSATA-enabled multicard readers for the brave and gullible

There's no denying that the two newest multicard readers from Addonics can connect to one's PC via eSATA as well as the conventional USB 2.0 method, but frankly, we've our doubts about the honest-to-goodness speed benefits of linking through the former. The outfit claims that when its (external) Pocket eSATA / USB DigiDrive is hooked up with an eSATA cable, any flash media you insert can be used as a bootable device with read / write speeds of up to 150MB/sec, but of course you'll want to slap the quickest SDHC or CompactFlash card you can find in there to fully take advantage of the extra bandwidth. There's also an internal version for those tired of looking at the gaping hole where your floppy drive used to be, and considering that both retail for $59.99, you'll probably spend the next four or five hours just choosing which you really need.

This week, we get our first taste of Nintendo's new WiiWare demos. Surprisingly, it didn't take Nintendo that long to flip the switch for North America, considering the company revealed the long-overdue feature -- and day-one annoyance -- only earlier this month. And on top of the free trial versions of select WiiWare titles (five total this week!), there are also two new Virtual Console titles to enjoy, as well as three new DSiWare games. Hit the break for the full list.

As usual, Nintendo's lineup announcement contains stuff that has never been announced before, no doubt sending publishers scrambling to get their own press releases ready -- including Nintendo! We now have dates for exciting third-party games like Space Invaders Extreme 2 (October 20) and A Witch's Tale (October 6), and Phantasy Star Zero (November 10). But Nintendo also revealed several DSiWare titles for the first time! The company will follow this week's Art Academy with Art Academy: Second Semester on September 28, followed in Q4 by a DSiWare version of the bit Generations title Digidrive. We're interested in seeing whether Skip takes over or whether Pixeljunk developer Q-Games remakes its GBA game.In other DSiWare news, the Electroplankton titles are due out in Q4, as is Pinball Pulse: The Ancients Beckon, which we don't know anything about, Sparkle Snapshots, Picturebook Games: The Royal Bluff, and -- this is going to freak iPhone gamers out -- Fieldrunners!

We found inspiration for today's video in the discussion about Q-Games' mysterious DS title. We referred to their bit Generations game Digidrive in that post, but it really takes a look at the game in motion to understand it. And even that probably won't fully explain it. Since we never got any of the bit Generations games in the U.S., this may be your first look at one of these abstract, experimental, weird GBA games. If you like what you see, you can get the game for $10 right now at Play-Asia, along with Dialhex and Boundish. We have enough trouble keeping Q-Games and Q? Entertainment (Tetsuya Mizuguchi's company) separate in our minds. Q-Games doing a game like this doesn't help.

Q-Games alternates between independent development and "second-party" status with Nintendo. That's just one of the perks of having helped create Star Fox, as founder Dylan Cuthbert did. Lately, they've been making the PixelJunk series of high-res downloadable games for the PlayStation Network, having finished up Star Fox Command for Nintendo.Cuthbert revealed in a Siliconera interview that, in addition to a new PixelJunk title, the company is working on another DS game for Nintendo. Will it be a Star Fox sequel or something interesting? As developers of the Bit Generations title Digidrive, Q-Games has shown a flair for abstract stuff.
