Evil witches – they're always up to something. In the case of Mizrabel, that something typically involves the Castle of Illusion. That's where she wreaked havoc on the Sega Genesis back in the early 90s, and it's where she's breaking out her bag of evil tricks once again, this time on the Nintendo 3DS.A spiritual successor to Castle of Illusion with an Epic Mickey makeover, Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion sees Oswald the Rabbit calling on his old pal Mickey to once again quell trouble in the Wasteland. People have forgotten about Mizrabel and her castle, so both have been banished to Oswald's dimension of forgotten Disney properties. But she's not just going to sit there and take it. Instead, she's kidnapping plenty of popular characters and stealing their "heart power," all so she can make the return trip to Toon World.%Gallery-158644%

A slide in an E3 investor presentation discussed Nintendo's retail 3DS games going to eShop, accompanied by images of, among other games, Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion. Nintendo quickly clarified, saying that the slide only indicated that first-party titles were headed to eShop.Except Epic Mickey's totally headed to eShop. Disney revealed that Power of Illusion would be released as retail and on the eShop at an Epic Mickey 2 event today, reported by Siliconera. The November 18 launch date will be the same for both distribution methods.

While Epic Mickey 2 continues to mine Disney film history for its subject matter, Dreamrift Entertainment's Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion aims squarely at video game nostalgia, bringing back the Castle of Illusion from the classic Sega Genesis game, along with its villain, Mizrabel. It refreshes the vintage setting (and its attendant slow-paced platforming) with new designs and new touchscreen tricks. The Castle of Illusion has fallen into Epic Mickey's "Wasteland," Dreamrift creative director Peter Ong explained to me during a meeting at E3. "Mickey's quest actually takes place in the Castle of Illusion in this game, but at the same time it's situated in Wasteland, so you'll see characters familiar to Epic Mickey and Wasteland such as Oswald being involved in Mickey's quest," Ong said.

We knew that Nintendo planned to release the "majority" of its retail 3DS games digitally on eShop going forward, but a note in an E3 investor presentation from NOA president Reggie Fils-Aime reveals plans to release third-party games digitally as well."We've got a massive list of AAA content on the way from all of the biggest names in gaming," Fils-Aime said, "that are all proven franchises, all exclusive to our platform, and all coming to stores both in physical and digital formats in the second half of 2012." Accompanying this statement is a slide featuring confirmed eShop/retail releases New Super Mario Bros. 2, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, and Paper Mario: Sticker Star, along with third-party games Kingdom Hearts 3D, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate, Scribblenauts Unlimited, and Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion.Unless this slide isn't meant to lay out the "massive list of AAA content," we can expect to see all of these games on the eShop alongside their retail releases.Update: Nintendo added text to the explanation of the slide, to say "refers to first-party titles only" in regards to the dual digital/retail releases. It was just a super misleading slide, then.

Disney has officially announced Disney Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion for 3DS, for those of us without Nintendo Power subscriptions. It allows you to draw objects "that magically transform into classic Disney-style 2D illustrations," which then become 3D on the 3DS's top screen.Dreamrift's 3DS sidescroller pays tribute to the Genesis game Castle of Illusion, portraying a future in which that game's title environment has been transported into Epic Mickey's "Wasteland." The witch Mizrabel attempts to drain the cartoon essence from popular Toons to pull herself out. This plot point seems to be a convenient excuse to bring in more Disney characters, as the screenshots are absolutely crawling with them. Power of Illusion will be out this fall alongside Epic Mickey 2.%Gallery-152235%
