Speedrunners raised $2.12 million for Doctors Without Borders
Speedrunning charity event Summer Games Done Quick finished up this past Sunday. The recipient of the funds raised during the event, which saw players rushing as fast as possible through titles like Animaniacs, Pikimin 3 and Rise of the Tomb Raider, went to benefit Doctors Without Borders. Gamers raised $2,122,529.20 for the medical charity that provides emergency aid to anyone afflicted by conflict, disasters, epidemics and more.
A week of speedrunning for charity starts Sunday
Summer Games Done Quick is back once again. Live from Minnesota, you can watch folks play through your favorite games as fast as they can, for charity. It starts Sunday afternoon at 12:30 PM Eastern and is scheduled to run until the wee hours next Sunday, June 30th. The benefactor this year is Doctors Without Borders, and games include Animaniacs for the SNES, the Wii U's Pikmin 3 and modern fare like Rise of the Tomb Raider. Closing it all out next weekend will be a glitchless run of Final Fantasy VI.
Watch favorite games finished quickly in the name of charity
It's a long July holiday weekend, and that means something big for gamers: it's the start of Summer Games Done Quick, the second of two annual livestreams for charity. As of 1PM Eastern on July 2nd, you'll witness a slew of top players rushing through games for nearly a full week to raise donations for Doctors Without Borders. It starts with a one-handed (!) speedrun of the recent hit NieR: Automata, and wraps up the night of July 9th with a glitch-free blitz through the classic title Earthbound.

It's the long holiday weekend, we're smack dab in the middle of the summer drought for big game releases and you want to make it to Tuesday with all your fingers intact. 'Mega Man' stars in charity speedrunning marathon this weekend
Are you ready to watch 160 hours of people playing through video games incredibly quickly? Then grab some snacks, coffee and a spot in the most comfortable seat in your house because Summer Games Done Quick returns this weekend to sate all your vicarious speed-running desires. Games on tap include the ultra-tough Demon's Souls and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze as well as classic fare like The Legend of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, Tetris: The Grand Master Series, multiple Mega Mans and Super Metroid. Google will match your donations to migrant and refugee relief
As you're no doubt aware, Europe is facing a crisis: it's struggling to accommodate scores of migrants and refugees coming to the continent in search of a better life. If you're wondering how you can help, you'll be glad to hear that Google is making things easier. It just launched a campaign that will see it match donations until it raises a total of €10 million ($11.3 million) toward migrant and refugee relief. Any money you send will be distributed to four nonprofits (Doctors Without Borders, International Rescue Committee, Save the Children and the UN) providing food, security and shelter to those in need. Google's effort won't solve everything, but it's worth checking out if you previously felt powerless to help. Update: (9/19): Google announced that it has reached the €10 million goal, and its website has links for those still interested in donating to contact the programs directly. Harmonix auctions off custom Beatles Xbox for charity, free publicity
We're sure you've already heard about the kerfuffle surrounding the use of Kurt Cobain's likeness in a Guitar Hero avatar. Maybe it's a generational thing (or maybe it speaks to the difference between the temperaments of Ms. Ono and Ms. Love) but while the former members of Nirvana are not amused by their treatment at the hands of videogame consoles 'round the world, it's nearly unanimous in the Beatles camp: Beatles Rock Band is awesome. If you're looking to indulge your Fab Four fixation -- and if money's no object -- you might want to head on over to eBay and peep the first of fifty Xbox 360s being auctioned off for by Harmonix. Bidding started off at $780, but as of Sunday afternoon it's over $17,000 -- with over four days left to go!
